The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This merlot-dominant blend is balanced with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot. It’s all dark violets, the floral scents over more reticent and reserved notes of blackberry and dried beef. With air, the palate fills in, the spices issue forth, clove, allspice, cocoa nibs, all lacing dark red fruit flavors with fine dusty tannins. For bo ssam.

The more Merlot-dominated 2020 D2 offers a vivid purple/ruby hue as well as beautiful notes of ripe black cherries, tobacco leaf, sandalwood, and spring flowers. I love its purity, and it has terrific mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. The blend is 61% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 60% new oak. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 D2 Proprietary Red Wine was made from 61% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The nose is as brilliant as always, with focused, dark red fruits, hints of black cherry skin and oak essence that sways out of the glass. Full-bodied and mineral tensioned, the palate offers fine-grained tannins with succulent healthy fruit flavors before ending with a fresh, food-friendly finish. At these prices, buy the entire case. About 108,000 bottles were filled after the wine rested in 68% new French oak for 20 months. Bravo! (Anthony Mueller)

Ripe and fruity nose of mulberries and blueberries with violets and candied orange peel. Medium-bodied, vibrant and succulent, with crunchy tannins and an expressive, flavorful finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)

Well-framed and precise, with handsomely layered blackberry, tobacco and black olive flavors that build tension toward medium-grained tannins. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 9,800 cases made. (Tim Fish)

The best cake in the world does not smell as good as this wine’s lemon zest, honeysuckle and peach tart aromas. There’s also a hint of sweetness on the palate, with lemon drop hard candies mixing with peach cotlets and the tangy botanicals of a gin and tonic. (Michael Alberty)

Expressive and lively, with tropical fruit and toasted spice flavors that linger on the finish. Drink now through 2021. 137,000 cases made.

This wine’s baking spice, vanilla, white flower and peach aromas are followed by sweet, full-feeling stone fruit and spice flavors that pull up short on the finish. It’s a straightforward crowd-pleaser.

Savory and bright, this offers a line of bright cherry flavor with unexpected richness. The wine finishes with a lingering scallion note; for chilled sesame noodles.

This superb value strikes first with a marine-themed nose of a salty ocean breeze, a driftwood beach fire, blackberries, olive oil and a trace of bacon fat. Smooth and viscous, with dark plum and bittersweet chocolate-covered cherries coating the palate. (Michael Alberty)
