Lots of purple fruit with blackberry and blueberry aromas, as well as cement and stone. Floral undertones, such as poppies. Medium to full body with firm tannins and a savory finish. Hints of dried, clove-like spice. No wood here. Drink now or hold.
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2020 Concreto Malbec also impressed me, because it comes from the warmest and most challenging vintage of recent years, yet the wine keeps its poise and depth. This is a selection from shallow, stony and calcareous soils from Altamira, so the vines are quite sensitive to heat. If you encounter it on its own, it will feel fresh and superb; the problem is tasting it next to the 2021, which is what I did, because there is an extra degree of freshness, precision and clarity in the 2021, one of the finest vintages for this wine so far. This fermented with full clusters that were foot trodden to prevent carbonic maceration and had a short maceration to get a fine-boned and elegant wine, with an even shorter maceration in warmer years. This is a wine that always transcends the price point. 43,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2020 Malbec Concreto from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley was fermented in whole bunches and aged in concrete. A bright, rich purple in the glass. The initially reductive nose delivers pure fruit flavors of ripe plum and blackberry before opening out into sweet and sour cherry with hints of herbs. Makes a broad entrance before the mild flow and juicy freshness, while the variety’s sweet tannins join forces with the gentle chalk to produce a pleasant, compact feel. The warm year accounts for a good measure of the structure and volume, resulting in a long-lasting, juicy and flavorful wine. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

A juicy malbec with a smoky edge to the blue and purple fruit. Round and juicy on the palate with plenty of grippy tannins. Good mid-palate fluidity and juiciness. Better in 2025. (Zekun Shuai)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2020 Terroir Selection Malbec blends grapes from their vineyards in different subzones of Mendoza. This time, 25% of the grapes come from the Albaneve Vineyard (Campo de los Andes, Valle de Uco), 20% come from the Temis Vineyard (El Cepillo, Valle de Uco), 30% from the Azamor Vineyard (Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo) and 25% from the Alizarine Vineyard (Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo), so it’s 45% Valle de Uco and 55% Luján. It fermented in small concrete vats and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. It’s ripe and balanced with 14.5% alcohol and has very good grip, polished tannins and ripe primary flavors with the oak neatly integrated. 84,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022. Blackberry and raspberry aromas are followed by light notes of espresso and chalk. Medium firm tannins and good acidity on the smooth palate. This is a medium-bodied wine with plenty of strawberry and blackberry flavors and notes of milk chocolate. It finishes with herbal notes. (Jesica Vargas)

The 2020 Malbec Golden Reserve was 85% aged in one-fifth new barrels, the rest in foudres. The nose offers extremely clear notes of both ripe and fresh fruit, such as cherry and floral aromas, including violets. Having spent a year in the bottle, it’s firm with voluminous tannins. Silky but crisp with a nimble flow. The trick to achieving a profile like this in a warm year is the 8% dash of grapes from the 2021 harvest, even though the earlier year remains on the label (the law allows this up to a 15% share). (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Black cherries and scented violets with some currants and baking spice, too. The tight and juicy palate provides an elegant expression of the fruit. Drink now.

The 2020 Golden Reserve Malbec matured in well-seasoned and neutral barriques, and 20% of the volume was in French oak foudres for 12 months. It’s ripe and juicy, with 14% alcohol and a dry finish, and the higher percentage of foudre has helped to keep the balance and freshness and the oak integrated into the wine. One million bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2021 Concreto Malbec has to be one of the finest vintages of this wine despite its youth and still shy personality. But there are tons of flowers, wild herbs and berries there waiting to emerge in an insinuating way, with austerity but unfurling layers and layers as the wine sits in the glass. It’s incredibly fine-boned with chalky tannins that scream limestone, full of precision and purity. For Sebastián Zuccardi, they didn’t do anything different, it’s just the character of the year. This is the wine that explains their philosophy without breaking your piggy bank. It is delicious, serious, approachable and with aging potential. What else do you want? I have sometimes confused this wine blind with one of their top bottlings. This is one of the best values around. They produced 47,000 bottles in this vintage. It was bottled in February 2022. The 2021 Malbec Concreto from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley was aged in concrete. Purple in the glass. It has a crisp, expressive nose of fresh plum, sour cherry and hints of blackberry, herbs, violets and lavender. Free-flowing but relaxed in the mouth, the palate leaves behind a mixture of chalk and juicy freshness before the sustained, pure fruit finish. The year suited this style perfectly. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
Such a brooding nose with black pepper, violet and fresh blueberry and blackberry fruit. Spicy and tight on the palate, but super polished, racy and refined. Medium-to full-bodied red with beautiful tannin tension and expressive, floral notes in the finish. Exemplary and authentic! So delicious now. Why wait?
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
A youthful, lively and expressive red, showing floral macerated cherry and plum flavors amid toasted herb and espresso bean details. Ends with minerally tannins, which are firm yet perky, and a note of baker’s chocolate. Best after 2024. 10,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Lots of tar to the blackberry and dark-fruit aromas here. Wet earth, too. It’s full-bodied and layered with juicy, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Rich and intense. Structured and powerful. Needs two or three years to soften. Best after 2023.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Q Malbec is a step up after coming from the Serie A Malbec. This is more specific about the origin, which is Valle de Uco, but they select grapes from Paraje Altamira and Los Chacayes for this bottling, where the soils start to deliver some chalky minerality in the wines. There is contained ripeness and fully developed flavors and aromas. It’s medium to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins. It matured in concrete and 30% in 500-liter oak barrels. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2018 Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal has notes reminiscent of some wines from the Northern Rhône, a combination of orange peel, blood and iron, denoting freshness and minerality, with a chalky sensation and a finish that is a mixture of juiciness, stoniness, saltiness and texture. It comes from a 0.51-hectare plot in the Piedra Infinita. The wine fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured in concrete until bottling. I think they have fine-tuned these single-plot wines tremendously since the initial and almost experimental 2015; in this 2018 wine, I found lots of similarities with the Finca Piedra Infinita bottling — it really excels. It finishes with a sapid and salty sensation and marked chalkiness. Finesse, elegance, simply superb! 1,100 bottles were filled in August 2019.

The 2020 Malbec Poligonos Del Valle De Uco San Pablo was aged in concrete. A vivid purple in the glass. The pure, expressive nose delivers fresh plum and sour cherry, country herbs and floral hints. In the mouth, it’s energetic and driven by the freshness with finely grained tannins and a free flow. The palate lingers at length, reliving the aromatic profile. Even though 2020 was a warm year, freshness was preserved by the cool region. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

A touch of black pepper lends spice to a nose of Jarilla, ripe red plum and chalk. Well structured, this red from one of the higher altitude vineyards in Uco Valley, delivers layers of fresh cherry and blueberry flavors accented by rosemary. It has a mineral texture and lively acidity finishing with spicy notes. (Jesica Vargas)

What a nose, garnering complexity and depth. A wide spectrum of aromas that range from blackberries and blueberries to graphite, tree bark and wet earth. A medium-to full-bodied red, showing so much fleshy fruit and powerful, chalky tannins. But never imposing nor flattering. Impeccable poise, with a long, tight finish. This is the kind of wine that you can drink now or lay down for two decades. Better from 2025.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Finca Caral Uco hails from Uco Valley and was made in concrete vats. Intense purple in hue. The nose, initially shy, grows increasingly nuanced and intense with time in the glass. It presents notes of cherry, plum, thyme and hints of bay leaf, violet, lavender and other herbs accompanied by an unusual whiff of pink grapefruit. Pristine and elemental in style, this is a textured red in which the fine-grained tannins deliver plenty of chalk, as well as crisp, juicy freshness. More intense and layered than other wines from the house, the formidable fruit flavors are part of a raw, unfiltered expression of the terroir. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Finca Canal Uco comes from the historical part of Altamira only across the street from their Piedra Infinita vineyard, where the soils are slightly deeper and with a little less limestone and the grapes achieve more ripeness and deliver slightly more generous wines. They planted this vineyard 12 years ago—it was previously planted to apple trees. They have subdivided this 50-hectare vineyard into 40 different plots. The soils are heterogeneous, and they don’t use the stonier soil and also avoid the deeper soils; so, they do a selection, ferment with some stems by plot and then do the blend of some 15 different parts of the vineyard. In Sebastian Zuccardi’s words, they deconstruct the vineyard and then build the wines from the block. This has a combination of the characteristics that are juicier and make you salivate and the limestone, trying to take the best from both worlds. It has some flowers and also iron and blood and is medium to full-bodied, with good ripeness and the house style of seriousness, balance and elegance within the natural power and intensity of the place. This also matured exclusively in concrete without epoxy coating, raw concrete. 11,900 bottles were filled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Beautifully aromatic, showing blood orange and perfumed plum aromas that fold over onto the creamy and velvety palate, with a hint of smoke lying beneath the core of lively plum and Rainer cherry. Ends with firming tannins and a hint of verbena and chalky minerality. Drink now through 2032. 500 cases made, 450 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

The 2017 Tito Zuccardi is a co-fermentation of 80% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Franc, a blend that changes with the vintage, but the fruit is always from Altamira. It’s a tasty expression of Altamira, with the chalky tannins and structure of the Cabernet Franc and the floral qualities of Malbec. They had never done this kind of blend before, and it feels like it works very nicely. This could be the finest Tito to date, despite the higher ripeness of the year. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2017.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, March 27, 2019
This co-fermented red shows lots of blackberry, black-olive and blueberry character with medium body, firm and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Cool chewiness to this. Malbec and cabernet sauvignon with a hint of ancellotta. Drink now.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2019
Saturated ruby. Pungent, wild scents of blackberry, violet, licorice pastille, medicinal herbs, pepper and spices, plus a sexy, almost gamey hint of reduction from the concrete. Bright and clearly delineated but also quite seamless, combining serious breadth and a light touch. The wine’s raspberry and spice flavors are complicated and energized by a stemmy wildness as well as a savory limestone quality. Offers terrific flavor intensity without weight and spreads out impressively to saturate the mouth. The dusty, fine-grained, building tannins saturate the front teeth and incisors on the rising, resounding finish. The wine’s sexy sweetness makes it accessible today but it should also last well. The best Tito to date (Tito was Sebastián Zuccardi’s grandfather, and the founder of the winery in 1963). Note that this 2017 represents a new blend for this wine, with Cabernet Franc taking the place of the Cabernet Sauvignon (and Ancellotta) in the ’16.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2016 José Zuccardi was produced with grapes (90% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) from Altamira and Gualtallary in the Valle de Uco. This is the continuation of the old Z bottling, but here the wine is aged mostly in 2,500-liter oak vats rather than in smaller barriques. There are herbal notes reminiscent of green tea leaves, spices and berries. The palate is serious and has chalky tannins, as they select grapes from places in the Valle de Uco that have limestone soils. It seems like they have found the way ahead for this wine in 2016; it’s fine, precise and elegant. 40,000 bottles were filled in August 2018.
