Susana Balbo Signature Malbec 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 77373

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Susana Balbo Signature contains a 6% dash of Petit Verdot, both from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley and was aged in 30% new barrels for 13 months. Striking purple in the glass. The complex nose presents notes of plum and sour cherry with hints of violets, cedar and herbs. Free in the mouth, the juicy freshness and fine, chalky tannins dominate the palate, lending outline and depth. The finish is compact and structured by the reactive tannins. A couple more years in the bottle will do the 2019 a world of good. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Susana Balbo Signature Malbec, produced with grapes from Finca La Delfina in Paraje Altamira, contained 4% Petit Verdot, and that could be the reason why it felt a bit roasted when tasted next to the 2018 that was balanced by Cabernet Franc. It felt slightly riper, and the tannins were grainy. It needs food. 144,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

The 2019 Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco was produced with grapes from La Consulta and Tupungato on stony soils fermented by plot with indigenous yeasts and matured mostly in concrete (75%) with a part in 3,500-liter oak foudres for 18 months. It has moderate 13% alcohol and a combination of power, elegance and great freshness, reflecting a great vintage. It’s articulate and has complexity, and it’s open and talks to you with a wide palette of aromas and flavors. It’s very fine and elegant and tastes like a much more expensive wine with the freshness from the vintage and the cooler place. It has to be one of the finest vintages of this bottling and a great value too. 28,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Black cherries and plums with a darker tone to the fruit and some white pepper. Medium body with a plump, round mouth-feel. Polished, smooth tannins to close. Soft-spoken and understated. Drink now.

Albaneve Vineyard
2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99829

WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/22
In 1998, Patrick d’Aulan expanded his family’s wine horizons (they own Château Sansonnet in St-Emilion and Château Dereszla in Tokaj) and purchased his first vineyard in Mendoza. This wine comes from their Albaneve vineyard in the Uco Valley, where Didier Debono blends malbec (58 percent) with cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. This 2019 is restrained, its faintly spicy tannins framing a distant core of crunchy red plum flavors. Though petit verdot is a small portion of the blend, its contributes persistent, broad tannins, while potent acidity offers some brightness.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
This has aromas of mulberries, blackberries, peppercorns, olives, hot stones and spice box. Full-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Structured. Firm, mineral finish. Malbec, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Drink after 2023.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A suave blend, with a core of plum and cherry flavors, plus peppercorn and loam accents. This has lively mineral acidity keeping things going on to the finish, where tannic grip checks in. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 8,333 cases made, 1,800 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

This has aromas of wild raspberries, blackberries, cardamom, violets and mixed peppercorns. Some nutmeg and lemon zest, too. Medium-bodied with very fine, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Vibrant wild-fruit character with a delightfully fresh finish. Drink or hold.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022
The delicate nose on this wine offers rosemary and red-berry aromas. It delivers concentrated cherry notes and layers of spice and dried herbs on the palate. Gentle hints of oak support rather than overtake. The wine has good acidity and a long finish. (Jesica Vargas)
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/22
Crunchy raspberry flavors and a tea-leaf bitterness in the tannins make for a light expression of malbec from Luján de Cuyo’s high altitudes. Some darker flavors in the finish recall more classic examples of the variety, and show a promising foundation for further development.

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, April 19, 2021
Lots of tar to the blackberry and dark-fruit aromas here. Wet earth, too. It’s full-bodied and layered with juicy, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Rich and intense. Structured and powerful. Needs two or three years to soften. Best after 2023.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Q Malbec is a step up after coming from the Serie A Malbec. This is more specific about the origin, which is Valle de Uco, but they select grapes from Paraje Altamira and Los Chacayes for this bottling, where the soils start to deliver some chalky minerality in the wines. There is contained ripeness and fully developed flavors and aromas. It’s medium to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins. It matured in concrete and 30% in 500-liter oak barrels. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Aromas of flowers and blueberries follow through to a full-bodied yet tight palate with fine, creamy tannins. Very refined and polished. Drink now.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Appellation La Consulta Malbec feels primary and fruit-driven, quite faithful to the variety and vintage, with good freshness and moderate alcohol. It was juicy, with some of the chalky texture of the stony soils. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
A Malbec from La Consulta, a historic terroir in the south of the Uco Valley, that spent 12 months in 35% new French oak. Expressive, local flavors of ripe plum and cherry with violet notes. Also typical of the terroir are the terse texture and gentle, voluminous palate, where the acidity is well-integrated, marshaling the creamy, lengthy flow and clear, fruity aftertaste. An excellent example of the La Consulta profile.

The 2020 Signature Brioso is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo and spent 14 months in French barrels. A dark garnet in the glass. The intricate nose offers herbs, ripe fruit and hints of plum, pepper and red currant with a whiff of mint. Creamy and expressive in the mouth with an expansive flow, good grip and juice, this is a classical, intense red with a prolix finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 30, 2022
Racy and layered with black and red fruit, black chocolate, black olives, blueberries and a mineral accent. A tangy, elegant and juicy palate, rounded by dusty tannins that melt into the fruit. Long and refined. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 23% malbec, 19% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot. Drink or hold.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The nose of the 2020 Brioso transports me directly to Agrelo and to a warmer year when tasting it next to other wines from cooler vintages in the Valle de Uco. It’s therefore more classical, with the floral Luján de Cuyo aromas of violets and herbs from the varieties—52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It achieved 14.5% alcohol and matured in new barriques for 15 months, which lent it abundant tannins and some oak aromas and flavors that are going to require some more time in bottle to be melted. 44,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2023
All grapes for this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot were sourced from Susana Balbo’s estate in Agrelo. It’s lively with elegant acidity and plush tannins. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, licorice and rosemary rise from the glass. This wine has a core of redfruit flavors wrapped in light notes of green bell pepper and coffee. (Jesica Vargas)
