Where It's From
Region / Mendoza
Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.
Country / Argentina
View more wines from Argentina
Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.
Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

The 2021 Concreto Malbec has to be one of the finest vintages of this wine despite its youth and still shy personality. But there are tons of flowers, wild herbs and berries there waiting to emerge in an insinuating way, with austerity but unfurling layers and layers as the wine sits in the glass. It’s incredibly fine-boned with chalky tannins that scream limestone, full of precision and purity. For Sebastián Zuccardi, they didn’t do anything different, it’s just the character of the year. This is the wine that explains their philosophy without breaking your piggy bank. It is delicious, serious, approachable and with aging potential. What else do you want? I have sometimes confused this wine blind with one of their top bottlings. This is one of the best values around. They produced 47,000 bottles in this vintage. It was bottled in February 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
The 2021 Malbec Concreto from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley was aged in concrete. Purple in the glass. It has a crisp, expressive nose of fresh plum, sour cherry and hints of blackberry, herbs, violets and lavender. Free-flowing but relaxed in the mouth, the palate leaves behind a mixture of chalk and juicy freshness before the sustained, pure fruit finish. The year suited this style perfectly. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
Such a brooding nose with black pepper, violet and fresh blueberry and blackberry fruit. Spicy and tight on the palate, but super polished, racy and refined. Medium-to full-bodied red with beautiful tannin tension and expressive, floral notes in the finish. Exemplary and authentic! So delicious now. Why wait?
A youthful, lively and expressive red, showing floral macerated cherry and plum flavors amid toasted herb and espresso bean details. Ends with minerally tannins, which are firm yet perky, and a note of baker’s chocolate. Best after 2024. 10,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

There’s better integration of the oak and better balance, harmony and elegance in the 2021 Privada Family Blend. It was produced with 40% Malbec and 30% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from vineyards in Luján de Cuyo. It feels very integrated, with each variety adding aromas and flavors and coming through as complex and powerful. This has to be one of the finest vintages for this bottling. Maybe they used less new barrels… 220,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2021 Malbec La Posta Paulucci from Ugarteche, Lujan de Cuyo was 50% aged in 15% new barrels. Purple in hue. The nose offers fresh plum with hints of spice, white pepper and woody aromas. On the palate, it’s rich and expansive with precise freshness. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
The straightforward and varietal 2021 Paulucci Malbec has juicy fruit and hints of violets, a medium body with moderate ripeness and alcohol and a velvety texture that makes it easy to drink and pleasant. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Lots of fruit and flowers here. Elegant violets, dark cherries and a fine twist of peppery spice. Quite juicy on the medium-bodied palate with nice tension to the fine-grained tannins. Round, pristine and well-balanced. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)
From Luján de Cuyo, the 2021 Malbec was aged for six months in used barrels. The nose offers ripe plum with jam and oak notes. Plush and dry on the palate with a velvety texture and full body. Expressive and fluid. A pleasant red, exactly what one would hope for from a Luján de Cuyo Malbec. The continued significance of this wine—whose style hasn’t charged much over the years—is evidence of the variety’s success with consumers. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

The 2021 BenMarco Malbec was produced with fruit from Los Chacayes in Valle de Uco, fermented destemmed in stainless steel and matured in second use French oak barrels for 11 months. It’s floral, spicy, aromatic, showy and expressive with the aromatic flowers with very integrated oak. It has both good ripeness, 14.3% alcohol, with good freshness and fine tannins. They produced an impressive 240,000 bottles. (Luis Gutiérrez)
The 2021 Malbec BenMarco from Los Chacayes, Uco Valley was aged for 11 months in used barrels. Purple in the glass. The crystal clear nose offers violets and fresh plum with hints of cherry. It’s free-flowirg in the mouth with good intensity and volume and coarse but polished tannins that sculpt the body and juicy, fresh flow. Long-lasting and vivid, this is a red that successfully delivers the energy to be had in this terroir. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
