Where It's From
Country / Chile
With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.
Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

2013 / 750 ml.
A ripe and muscular red, with concentrated flavors of plum pudding, cherry tart and dried blackberry, filled with Asian spice notes. Finishes with dark chocolate, mint and minerally accents. Drink now through 2020. 25,000 cases made.
Saturated ruby. Energetic red berry and floral aromas are complemented by deeper notes of mocha and vanilla. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and cherry flavors given spine by juicy acidity. Clings with very good tenacity on the finish, which is given shape by smooth, fully absorbed tannins. While this wine has plenty of material to age, it’s pretty tasty right now.
In 2013, they changed the source for their Merlot from Rapel to Maule. So the 2013 Merlot Marqués de Casa Concha is produced with fruit from San Clemente in the Maule Valley, and contains 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines planted between 1997 and 2000. As many of the reds lately, the wine was aged in a combination of 5,000-liter botti and French barriques (25% new) for some 15 months. It has a fresh and balsamic nose with some minty notes and also a bright note I often associate with Cachapoal, which Marcelo Papa tells me it’s more Maule, quite aromatic and showy. This is nothing like the Merlots from the past, and the wine shows much more acidity and freshness, showing the character of Maule, much sharper and fresher. 260,000 bottles produced.

2019 / 750 ml.
The 2019 Pinot Noir Marques de Casa Concha from the San Julián vineyard in Limarí, 15 miles from the sea, planted in alluvial red clay soil, spent 11 months in French oak barrels. A medium-hued red, it offers crystal-clear aromas of sour cherry and earth and a bare-bones palate with a fine, silky texture and a slightly saline flavor.
The 2019 Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir was produced with fruit from vines planted in Limarí between 2006 and 2009. It’s ripe but has kept very good acidity and comes through as balanced and fresh while it’s also powerful. The oak feels more and more integrated, as the wine matured in French oak barrels, 15% of them new, for 11 months. 54,000 bottles were filled in April 2020.
Piquant red-fruit aromas of cranberry, currant and raspberry include a note of iodine and a hint of dried meat. This is a lively style of Pinot that’s medium in weight. Spicy oak notes accent plum and raspberry flavors in front of a finish propelled by healthy acidity. (Michael Schachner)
Shows hints of ripeness to the well-knit dark cherry and currant flavors. The spicy and fresh-tasting finish is accented by beetroot notes. Drink now. 4,500 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)

Puente Alto Vineyard
2018 / 750 ml.
This is amazing. The vibrancy and energy in this wine is stunning. The complexity of aromas are breathtaking with flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries and peaches. Full-bodied, yet ever so refined and polished with impeccable texture and beauty. The length is marvelous. This is a testimony to balance, harmony and transparency in a great red. Drink after 2023.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor is a combination of a proven style – the blend also includes 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot — and a particularly good harvest in the Puente Alto region in Maipo. Made by Enrique Tirado and aged for 15 months in French barrels, it is garnet red in the glass, with a very complex expression that unfolds in layers, beginning with black currant and sour cherry notes, followed by mint, cedar and pepper and a faint whiff of red pepper. Juicy in the mouth with fine-grained tannins and a concentration that centers the wine, channeling and stretching out the fruity backdrop, this is an unusually harmonious and delicious Bordeaux blend.
Powerful and well-structured, with vibrant acidity backing a lively blend of dark fruit and fresh-crushed cooking spice flavors. Cedary and savory notes in the midpalate, with a long finish filled with underbrush accents. Drink now through 2027. 14,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

2011 / 750 ml.
Powerful in its scale and ambition, this syrah shows the influence of the Andes in its rich in herbal notes and ripe red fruit. An opulent wine for a steak.
Deep ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the spice-accented nose. Sappy and precise, displaying good lift and cut to its bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors. The spiciness comes back on the finish, which shows good energy and subtle tannic grip. Buin is a subzone of the Maipo Valley.
Shows good concentration to the ripe red fruit flavors, with notes of iron and graphite, lingering on the tannic finish. Drink now. 5,550 cases made.
I enjoyed the 2011 Marques de Casa Concha Syrah Buin from the Buin appellation within Maipo, which aged in Burgundian French oak barrels (around 30% new). It has a nose of black and blue fruit, with hints of smoke. It’s a generous wine, with a medium-bodied palate and some chunky tannin from the barriques, ending with a note of dark chocolate. Drink 2015–2018.
