Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Reserve 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99912

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2020 Malbec Reserve was produced from vines on limestone soils in Gualtallary (80%) and Altamira (20%) with concentration and elegance. It has 13.8% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance. It fermented with natural yeasts, and 75% of the volume matured in oak foudre for 18 months and the rest in raw concrete. They have had the courage to go for their own style, and this wine reflects that, but perhaps it’s the most classical of their bottlings. It has ripeness without excess and varietal aromas of violet, iron and blood with an earthy touch and the chalky minerality in the texture. 2020 was a warm and dry vintage, and the wine manages to keep the poise and has the complexity of the noble origin but without the agility of the wines from 2019. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2020 Malbec Reserve from the Uco Valley was 75% aged in foudres. Purple in the glass. This has a mild nose of herbs, violets and sweet and sour cherry. The 2020 is a red with refined, reactive tannins that will improve in the bottle, delivering intense flavor, a juicy flow and a bold expression. The feel is chalky and quite crunchy for a warm year. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Blackberry and raspberry aromas are followed by light notes of espresso and chalk. Medium firm tannins and good acidity on the smooth palate. This is a medium-bodied wine with plenty of strawberry and blackberry flavors and notes of milk chocolate. It finishes with herbal notes. (Jesica Vargas)

The 2020 Malbec Poligonos Del Valle De Uco San Pablo was aged in concrete. A vivid purple in the glass. The pure, expressive nose delivers fresh plum and sour cherry, country herbs and floral hints. In the mouth, it’s energetic and driven by the freshness with finely grained tannins and a free flow. The palate lingers at length, reliving the aromatic profile. Even though 2020 was a warm year, freshness was preserved by the cool region. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023
A touch of black pepper lends spice to a nose of Jarilla, ripe red plum and chalk. Well structured, this red from one of the higher altitude vineyards in Uco Valley, delivers layers of fresh cherry and blueberry flavors accented by rosemary. It has a mineral texture and lively acidity finishing with spicy notes. (Jesica Vargas)

Fresh-plum, brambleberry, hibiscus and citrus-zest aromas. It’s medium-bodied with sleek, fine tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and juicy with crushed stones on the finish. Drink or hold.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
Appellation Paraje Altamira explores the more austere side of Malbec. It was harvested quite early and aged in foudres. The nose offers violet, thyme and blackberry as part of a markedly reductive profile. Juicy on the palate with fine tannins, chalk and a restrained feel; the freshness is key. Persistent with an herbal profile. Regular drinkers of Malbec might well be caught unawares: this is a statement wine.

RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco was produced with grapes from La Consulta and Tupungato on stony soils fermented by plot with indigenous yeasts and matured mostly in concrete (75%) with a part in 3,500-liter oak foudres for 18 months. It has moderate 13% alcohol and a combination of power, elegance and great freshness, reflecting a great vintage. It’s articulate and has complexity, and it’s open and talks to you with a wide palette of aromas and flavors. It’s very fine and elegant and tastes like a much more expensive wine with the freshness from the vintage and the cooler place. It has to be one of the finest vintages of this bottling and a great value too. 28,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
Black cherries and plums with a darker tone to the fruit and some white pepper. Medium body with a plump, round mouth-feel. Polished, smooth tannins to close. Soft-spoken and understated. Drink now.

RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The red 2020 Malbec Clásico was produced with 80% grapes from Luján de Cuyo and 20% grapes from Valle de Uco, mostly their own grapes, all in stainless steel and vinified by plot with their native yeasts. It matured in concrete for nine months. It’s ripe without excess and develops a full array of aromas and flavors but keeping 13.5% alcohol, very fresh for the warm year. It’s juicy, complex beyond fruit, a little herbal, medium-bodied and with very fine tannins. It’s clean, expressive and open, a wine that has to be approachable from when you pull the cork. They are working to increase the drinkability, which will be seen more and more in the following years. This represents the largest part of their production with some 500,000 bottles. There are different bottlings. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2020 Malbec Clásico is 75% from Luján de Cuyo and 25% from the Uco Valley. A mild purple hue. Considering the year, the nose presents notes of quite fresh plum with hints of herbs, syrup and floral aromas. In the mouth, it has good volume, firm, grippy tannins and an expansive flow before the ripe finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
Nice sour cherries with a streak of white pepper and violets. Medium-bodied, but fleshy. Ripe, almost creamy tannins extend to the finish, but are still juicy and vibrant. Not complex, but so balanced and easy to drink. Drink now.
