Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.
The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.
Region / New York
Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

A concentrated and spicy dry riesling that has tons of pink-grapefruit, apricot and mirabelle aromas. Impressive textural complexity, yet this still retains wonderful freshness and delicacy. Extremely long, delicious finish. A cuvée of 60% Josef vineyard, 20% Magdalena vineyard and 20% HJW vineyards. Drink or hold.
This blend of estate vineyards is consistently a favorite year over year. The 2020 delivers intense aromas of fennel pollen, lemon oil, yellow apple, tangerine and sliced ginger, making it utterly compelling. Ample apple and stone fruit flavors blend with earthy, spicy elements on the dry palate, with well placed acidity and a pithy texture lending support. (Alexander Peartree)
Winegrower Fred Merwarth finds that his Josef Vineyard ripens at just the right level for a dry style, so he focuses this Reserve on that site. The wine is more lemony and citrus-based than the 2020 Dry Riesling (also recommended here). It has a mildly herbal attack giving way to a midweight mouthfeel that’s comfortable and slightly tense, especially in the finish. For herb-roasted halibut.
The 2020 Dry Riesling Reserve comes in with eight grams of residual sugar and 12.7% alcohol and is perceptibly dry. It is a blend of 60% grapes from the Josef Vineyard, 22% from Magdalena and 18% from HJW, meaning that it has every chance to be a great wine, just like the pricier single-vineyard offerings. It is consistently one of the best intersections in the lineup for quality and price. This year it is about as good as anything in the lineup, just like last year. Deep and lingering on the finish, it has controlled power, the acidity soaked up by the concentration and countered by the modest sugar. It’s delicious but serious, sturdy but lively. It will be interesting to see how this compares with its predecessor, the 2019, as they both age. I suspect the 2019 will win as time goes on, but this is a very respectable competitor today and a pretty terrific wine with some potential upside in the cellar. (Mark Squires)

Enveloping nose of mandarin oranges, apricots and summer flowers. Very succulent with a cornucopia of ripe fruit, the power beautifully underplayed. I love the way the juiciness and the lively acidity are intertwined at the long finish. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
The 2020 Dry Riesling Margrit comes in with 11.1 grams of residual sugar and 6.3 of total acidity, plus 12% alcohol. This is sourced from a single vineyard on Seneca Lake, owned by the winery, that was planted in 2008. Typically more on the sugary side than the Eugenia, relatively speaking, this is even a bit more elevated in sugar in this big year while the acidity is a little less. It still is balanced, quite delicious and relatively transparent. It’s the one that will make everyone swoon today. Calling it a crowd-pleaser may be an understatement. Great Riesling, though, acquires that “great,” by aging effortlessly and becoming something more. It will be interesting to see how much “more” this can acquire. If I had a quibble, the wine opens with some tension, but it loses some precision and power fairly quickly as it airs and warms. It has enough acidity so it will never be flabby and enough sugar and fruit so it will always be delicious, but I’d still give the nod to the Eugenia in this report. It also left me with some doubts as to how much it might improve. It can develop, for sure, but how much is the open question. I think it is at least a step behind the 2020 Eugenia and the 2019 Margrit (not here in this report). You sure won’t regret drinking it, though. (Mark Squires)
Aromas of apricot, yellow apple and honeycomb wax drive the nose of this Riesling sourced from the winery’s Seneca Lake vineyard. It’s pleasantly soft and supple on the palate yet lifted by bright acidity, creating a cohesive experience of peach, papaya and apple flavors that ends pert and lively. (Alexander Peartree)

Delicate aromas of lemon peel and pineapple open up as this wine sits in the glass. There’s admirable breadth and juiciness to the fruit on the palate, with a gentle creaminess undercut by lifted acidity and a dash of crushed salt. Overall, it shows nice energy and lift, ending with citrus and warm spice accents.
