Where It's From

Appellation / Cotes du Rhone

View more wines from Cotes du Rhone

Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The generous core of sappy cherry and red licorice in this red shows a lot of warmth and plushness—and a lot of integrity. Though heady and ripe, this has a pleasing herbal thread and tangy acidity to maintain good balance. A wall of finely crushed iron is seamlessly integrated, with a kiss of singed alder on the finish. A gorgeous wine. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Vaccarèse. Drink now through 2035. 80 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous is a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vaccarèse and Cinsault. Slightly deeper hued compared to the Vieilles Vignes, it has an incredibly Burgundian style in its ripe cherry and raspberry fruits as well as leafy herbs, graphite, and floral, spicy aromas and flavors. Ultra-fine, medium to full-bodied, and exceedingly elegant, with silky tannins, it’s a dead ringer for a great Clos Vougeot. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This has good concentration and energy to the dense core of dark fruit and bitter cherry, with great poise and elegance despite its ripeness (an impressive feat for the vintage). Guided by finely crushed mineral accents and tannins, this reveals pretty high-toned floral notes and leafy tobacco. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Vaccarese and Muscardin. Drink now through 2032. 900 cases made. (Kristen Bieler)

More garrigue, Provençal herbs, pepper, and ripe framboise and cherry notes all emerge from the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, another beautiful 2021 from this estate that has a gorgeous sense of purity and elegance. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is a solid effort from the Brunier family. The 2021 La Crau unfurls in the glass with a fragrant perfume of crushed violets, lavender, strawberry, raspberry, dried herbs, mint and a dash of white pepper. It is full-bodied and layered, showing a refined profile marked by soft tannins and lively acids. Not as powerful as either the 2020 or 2019, but the 2021 is certainly the most elegant rendition among them. (Nicolas Greinacher)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/30/2023
The Grand Vin from this great estate, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a semi-opaque ruby hue to go with a classic style in its ripe red and black berry fruits, peppery garrigue, leather, earth, black olive, and baking spice-driven aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, and balanced, with fine tannins, it’s a beautiful wine in the vintage that should have 15 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 100% Syrah 2016 Crozes Hermitage Guer Van sports a saturated purple color as well as a classic bouquet of dark fruits, peppery herbs, damp earth, and violets. From the northern part of Crozes and granite soils, this medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated yet elegant Syrah shines on all accounts. This cuvée was mostly destemmed (there’s 15% stems) and brought up all in used demi-muids. Drink it over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep ruby. Ripe dark fruit and game aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, licorice and dark chocolate. Hefty and broad in the mouth, offering chewy blackberry, bitter cherry and smoky bacon flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Distinctly weighty and rich, with chewy tannins building on the floral- and spice-tinged finish.

Moving to the two Saint Joseph reds, the 2019 Saint Joseph La Croix De Chabot offers a rich, medium-bodied, mineral-laced style that carries loads of red and blue fruits, scorched earth, and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. Beautifully done, I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring as it has ample tannins. (Jeb Dunnuck)
