Yannick Alleno & Michel Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 93711

VN90+90–91 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Lively cherry and raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of baking spices, lavender and white pepper. Smooth, focused and appealingly sweet, offering spice-laced red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors that tighten up slightly on the back half. A zesty mineral note appears on the red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by supple, even tannins.

From vines throughout the region and a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah brought up all in concrete, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône comes from a collaboration between Michel Chapoutier and 3-star Michel Chef Yannick Alleno. It has a perfumed bouquet of ripe black cherries, blackberries, garrigue, and chocolate. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Côtes Du Rhône that has a distinct saltiness, beautiful fruit, and a great finish. It seems to always over-deliver. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP89+89–91 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The 2018 Cotes du Rhone is a 70-30 blend of Grenache and Syrah, all matured in tank. It shows appealing blueberry and cherry fruit, even a hint of apricot or peach. Ripe and supple, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a long, silky finish. Nicely done.

Where It's From

Appellation / Cotes du Rhone

View more wines from Cotes du Rhone

Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 100% Syrah 2016 Crozes Hermitage Guer Van sports a saturated purple color as well as a classic bouquet of dark fruits, peppery herbs, damp earth, and violets. From the northern part of Crozes and granite soils, this medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated yet elegant Syrah shines on all accounts. This cuvée was mostly destemmed (there’s 15% stems) and brought up all in used demi-muids. Drink it over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Deep ruby. Ripe dark fruit and game aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, licorice and dark chocolate. Hefty and broad in the mouth, offering chewy blackberry, bitter cherry and smoky bacon flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Distinctly weighty and rich, with chewy tannins building on the floral- and spice-tinged finish.

Moving to the two Saint Joseph reds, the 2019 Saint Joseph La Croix De Chabot offers a rich, medium-bodied, mineral-laced style that carries loads of red and blue fruits, scorched earth, and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. Beautifully done, I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring as it has ample tannins. (Jeb Dunnuck)

From centenarian Grenache vines grown on sandy soils in La Crau and Pignan, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre is a perfumed beauty, redolent with hints of fennel, roses, orange zest and ripe cherries. Matured solely in concrete, there’s no oak influence, just a purity of fruit expression borne on a full-bodied but nearly weightless palate. Silky and long on the finish, this tour de force should still be drinking well in a decade.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2021
This has a nice sleek core of cassis and cherry paste flavors that show tension and cut, while notes of sandalwood, red tea and garrigue filter in throughout. A long, subtle sanguine thread laces up the finish. Approachable, but there’s also lots of intrigue that bodes well for cellaring. Drink now through 2036. 250 cases made, 70 cases imported. Another beautiful wine from this family estate, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre comes from a sandy portion of the famed La Crau lieu-dit (near Charbonnière) and is all Grenache brought up in tank and demi-muid. It too reveals a lighter ruby color as well as a heavenly perfume of dried flowers, incense, herbes de Provence, and peppery garrigue as well as kirsch and framboise-like fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a seamless texture, it’s ideal for enjoying any time over the coming 10–12 years, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it age a little longer. A blend of 50% Mourvèdre, 40% Syrah and 10% Grenache, the 2018 Lirac La Lorentine combines notes of cola, plums, blueberries and black olives on the nose. It’s full-bodied, concentrated, silky and long, with a hint of licorice on the finish. It’s a damn good-looking Lirac.

JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
As always, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Amiral G. is all Grenache that comes from a single parcel near the estate. An incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, seaweed wrapper, black licorice, and roasted garrigue gives way to a medium to full-bodied, powerful Grenache with a stacked mid-palate, beautiful tannins, and more power and richness than just about every other wine in the vintage. Nevertheless, like all great Grenache, it stays beautifully balanced and weightless on the palate. It’s already complex but promises 15 years or more of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A beauty, with captivating raspberry, plum and black tea aromas and flavors and a silky, seductive feel, this glides through effortlessly. So stylish it almost floats by, but it leaves a mineral edge to linger persistently, keeping it grounded. Drink now through 2035. 300 cases made, 30 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Vivid ruby-red. Spice-accented raspberry, cherry and pungent flowers and herbs on the fragrant nose. Plush red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors show surprising energy for their depth. Harmonious tannins frame a long, smooth finish that strongly echoes the floral and cherry notes. (Josh Raynolds)
