Planetes de Nin 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 91207

RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
A 60/40 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena from the vineyard that names the wine, the 2016 Planetes de Nin saw a similar vinification and aging as the 2017 I tasted next to it, so the differences found were only due to the vintage and the moment of harvest. This is a fresher vintage, with tantalizing aromas that are subtle and elegant, with notes of violets and red cherries, nuanced and ever-changing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely textured, with very fine tannins and fine chalky minerality. 9,108 bottles were filled in April 2017.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

The amazing 2015 Planetes de Nin is a young-vine blend of Garnacha and Cariñena that fermented in 3,200-liter French oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 3,000-liter oak vat for some 18 months. It starts as a closed and serious red, with great detail, poise and elegance, incredibly fresh for the conditions of the year, challenging the 2014 with freshness. It’s fresh and mineral, elegant and perfumed, floral and nicely balanced on the palate. This has to be the finest Planetes to date. Bravo! 9,070 bottles were filled in April 2017.

Carles Ortiz planted Los Planetes in the late 1990s, a 12-acre parcel of schist soils facing east on the outskirts of Porrera. Farmed biodynamically and vinified with 70 percent whole clusters and ambient yeasts, it’s funky at first, smelling of barnyards and blood. Little by little, these aromas mix with fresh fruit, the wine turning into a delicious and complex red, refreshing and alive.

The 2016 Les Manyes is a hard act to follow, but I could have said the pure Cariñena 2016 Les Tosses was a Garnacha, such is the elegance and the floral, nuanced nose! This might be the most elegant Cariñena out there. It comes from a very old, steep vineyard in the village of Torroja on very dark slate soils. It matured in an oak foudre, quite old, and there is a nice note of graphite and wet slate, red and black cherries and a spice touch. It has great freshness, good acidity and is fluid and relaxed, powerful yet elegant and harmonious. 2,668 bottles were filled in July 2018.

The purity to this 100% cariñena is very, very impressive with rose petal, tar, asphalt and dark-fruit character. Full body. Tight and compact with beautiful depth and endless length. So much graphite and intensity. Chewy at the end. Drink after 2021.

A spectacular nose of ripe berry fruits, herbes de Provence, dried flowers, iron, and bouquet garni defines the 2016 Les Tosses, which is another 100% Carignan from this terrific estate sourced from a single vineyard of old vines outside the village of Torroja. Medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced and elegant on the palate, it has an incredible sense of finesse and purity, awesome minerality, and the tannin quality is off the charts. This is a gorgeous, elegant, perfumed and complex wine that does everything right. Drink bottles any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
