Where It's From

Appellation / Cotes du Rhone

View more wines from Cotes du Rhone

Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Perfumy and high-toned, with beautiful dried rose petal, anise, cherry and raspberry coulis flavors. Broad on the palate, with subtle chewiness adding textural intrigue and toasted alder echoing on the well-meshed finish. Ripe and generous for the vintage. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 1,200 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Domaine Barville comes from a mix of terroirs and is based on 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre that spent a year in foudre, old barrels, concrete, and terra cotta. Bright strawberries, redcurrants, peppery herbs, and a kiss of leather all emerge on the nose, and this lively, medium-bodied, elegant, solidly Provençal 2021 is drinking nicely today and will still be drinking nicely in 7–8 years. RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th Oct 2023
The 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape ratchets up the intensity from the Coudelet, adding more pronounced Mourvèdre-derived notes of truffle and tree bark to go with ripe black cherries and plums, crushed stone and hints of dark chocolate. Full-bodied in the mouth, with ample concentration and richness, this gently tannic wine finishes long and velvety, with echoes of licorice and dark fruit. It’s a standout from a difficult vintage. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/30/2023
Including more Mourvèdre than usual (40%), the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as an utterly classic Beaucastel nose of ripe red and blue fruits, spice, game, truffly earth, and ground pepper. Reminding me of the 2012, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a layered, concentrated md-palate, sweet tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2024
Toasty, meaty and inviting, this fresh red shows an understated, savory side, with notes of singed spices, mesquite, wet earth and fresh tobacco leaf flanking a silky range of plum and warm cherry compote flavors. This channels its terroir, with a round feel held in check by refined tannins, while the finish is lined with cool minerality and heavy iron. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret Blanc, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul de Pinet, Bourboulenc, Picardan and Roussanne. Drink now through 2030. 3,470 cases made. (Kristen Bieler)

Coming in at 14% alcohol, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Counoise, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut and other permitted varieties. The result is magnificent, wafting from the glass with fragrant aromas of juicy red fruits mingling with hints of black cherry, mint, garrigue and a pinch of white pepper. Full-bodied and layered, ever-so-velvety tannins wrap this elegant-to-the-core polished red, before concluding with a bright finish. (Nicolas Greinacher)

Stacks of spice, dried Mediterranean herbs and a touch of leather on the nose. Bold, structured and lively, this is an impressive wine for the humble appellation. Long harmonious finish with good complexity. A cuvee of grenache, syrah and carignan from vines that are over 50-years-old. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
JD87+87–89 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/16/2023
The 2021 Côtes Du Rhône looks to be well worth your time. Based on 50% Grenache and 25% each Syrah and Carignan, it has a darker, black, almost blue-fruited profile as well as pretty notes of violets and pepper, good mid-palate depth, ripe yet present tannins, and a good finish. It shows the fresher style of the vintage while still offering fruit and texture. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is a solid effort from the Brunier family. The 2021 La Crau unfurls in the glass with a fragrant perfume of crushed violets, lavender, strawberry, raspberry, dried herbs, mint and a dash of white pepper. It is full-bodied and layered, showing a refined profile marked by soft tannins and lively acids. Not as powerful as either the 2020 or 2019, but the 2021 is certainly the most elegant rendition among them. (Nicolas Greinacher)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/30/2023
The Grand Vin from this great estate, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a semi-opaque ruby hue to go with a classic style in its ripe red and black berry fruits, peppery garrigue, leather, earth, black olive, and baking spice-driven aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, and balanced, with fine tannins, it’s a beautiful wine in the vintage that should have 15 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A fragrant and intense nose of dark cherries, plums, dried lavender, spice and cigar box. A full-bodied Chateauneuf with solid, fine-grained tannins that build on the palate with a grip at the end. Focused and flavorful with real harmony. Drink or hold. (Zekun Shuai)

Blackberries, ripe cherries, graphite, and peppery herbs all emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Caparaçon, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, classical Châteauneuf to drink over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Notes of blackberries, cassis, black olives, dried thyme and licorice. Medium-to full-bodied with creamy but structured tannins. Flavorful finish with strawberries. An excellent Gigondas here. Drinkable now, but better from 2023. (Zekun Shuai)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021
This Grenache-dominant blend (augmented by a small proportion of Syrah) highlights rich, roasted black-plum and cherry compote flavors accented by streaks of granite and gun flint. Voluptuous in texture and finishing on fine, furry tannins, it’s an immediately enjoyable wine with a spicy char and cinnamon finish. Best now–2026. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
Deep garnet. Displays aromas of cherry and blackberry, along with hints of woodsmoke and black pepper. Gently chewy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, dark berry and licorice flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spicy finish that echoes the cherry note. (Josh Raynolds)
