Where It's From
Appellation / Cotes du Rhone
View more wines from Cotes du Rhone
Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.
Region / Rhone
Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.
The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.
Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

2022 / 750 ml.
Expressive and energetic, with freshly rendered lemon curd, peach, apricot and wet stone flavors. Fresh and focused, offering a glossy palate cut by bitter chalky minerality. Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne and Viognier. Drink now. 1,300 cases made, 168 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
Made from Grenache, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc has pretty citrus and melon fruit as well as some sappy herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s pure, medium-bodied, has a vibrant sense of minerality, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Roughly equal parts Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne, with 5% each Bourboulenc and Viognier, the 2022 Cotes du Rhone Blanc looks to be a super buy this vintage. Loaded with floral, honeyed-pear fruit, this medium to full-bodied effort is plump, round and lush. It’s appealing and delicious. (Joe Czerwinski)

Black raspberries, spring flowers, minty herbs, and hints of white pepper all emerge from the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Fermented with 10% stems, this incredibly floral, seamless, elegant wine comes closer to the style of Rayas than anything else I’ve tasted from the Rhône. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos Saint Antonin, crafted entirely from Grenache Noir planted on the sandy soils of La Crau and Font du Loup, possesses a deep, elegant bouquet of mulberries, dark berries, dark cherries, flowers and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and juicy, it’s delicate and perfectly balanced with a long, ethereal and fruity finish. Matured for 12 months in demi-muids and foudres, it stands out as a stunning newcomer in our guide. (Yohan Castaing)

The 2022 Gigondas Tradition Le Grand Montmirail is the classic cuvée from this great estate, and it’s based on 70% Grenache and 10% each of Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. It has rocking purity in its red and black fruits as well as peppery, floral nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, with fine tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish, it’s going to round into form with just a year or two of bottle age and drink nicely through 2027 if well stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Exuberant notes of boysenberry and red cherry licorice offer an herbal lift in this juicy, plump version. Hibiscus and lavender accents add a pretty floral edge, with incense smoke on the finish. High-toned and glossy, this is grounded by ample graphite details and fine-grained tannins for an elegant structure. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2030. 5,000 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
The 2022 Gigondas Tradition Le Grand Montmirail is made from certified organic Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Distinctive hazelnut and strawberry scents emerge, followed by hints of ripe raspberry and dried herbs. This is a medium-bodied, moderately concentrated wine that shows meticulous balance. (Nicolas Greinacher)
Consisting of 70% Grenache and 10% each Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah, Brusset’s 2022 Gigondas Tradition Les Grand Montmirail boasts enchanting aromas of strawberries and cherries wreathed in subtle garrigue notes. In the mouth, it’s medium to full-bodied, ripe and silky but firm, with ample concentration and a softly tannic finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed brilliantly. Ripe red and black fruits, classic Provençal garrigue, and leather, spicy notes define the aromatics, and it’s a layered, balanced, incredibly classy style (I actually find a touch of Clos des Papes-like character in this beauty) that has integrated tannins, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. It’s going to be a candidate for perfection at maturity and is a thrilling wine in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Less exuberant than the F601, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Famille Isabel Ferrando is a blend of 60% Grenache Noir, 16% Mourvèdre, 16% Cinsault and 8% Syrah. It exhales a complex, shy bouquet of dark berries, spices, licorice, violet and dark cherries. Medium-bodied, fleshy and round with a textured mid-palate, it’s enrobing and suave with structured tannins that segue into a long, penetrating and racy finish with lots of vertical energy. It matured for 18 months in a combination of foudres (34%), concrete tank (33%) and terracotta jars (33%). (Yohan Castaing)
The inviting 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is at eye level with the gorgeous 2020. Showcasing ripe forest strawberry, black cherry, licorice, crushed violet and licorice, the 2022 is simply alluring. Ripe and polished tannins provide good structure and lay a solid foundation for extended bottle-aging. This year’s blend is 65% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 12% Mourvèdre and 8% Syrah. Tasted twice with consistent notes. (Nicolas Greinacher)

Not yet bottled and based on 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, the 2022 Ventoux Domaine has a pure, up-front, perfumed, and medium-bodied style as well as terrific aromatics of black raspberries, blackberries, spring flowers, and smoky, scorched earth-like minerality. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The big black fruit has excellent youthful freshness and the tannins are enough to give this full-bodied Rhone red a very clear line, but are not in the least dominant. A touch of tar and soot add interest to this bold wine. Long, firm finish with a hint of stony character. A cuvee of grenache, syrah and mourvedre from organically grown grapes. Matured in a mix of foudres and eggs. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
