Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL is pure magic and one of the most singular wines out there. Based on 65% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other varieties, it was only 30% destemmed and brought up all in demi-muids. Where previous vintages of this beauty were almost over the top, the 2019 shows a more elegant, pure, balanced profile as well as incredible aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, herbes de Provence, ground pepper, violets, and other notes of Southern Rhône-like goodness. Incredibly powerful and opulent, it somehow manages to stay perfectly balanced, has a wonderful sense of freshness, silky yet substantial tannins, and an awesome finish. Unfortunately, there are just over 300 cases produced, so it won’t be easy to find, but this ranks with the all-time greats. It deserves 4–5 years of bottle age and should evolve for 30 years if well-stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)
After the inaugural 2007 vintage and the follow-up 2016, 2019 is only the third year when Domaine de la Janasse bottled the Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL. It is predominately made from old-vines Grenache along with small amounts of Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. While the Grenache has aged for two years in foudre, the Mourvèdre was briefly aged in French oak barriques with a small proportion of new oak. Medium ruby-colored, it wafts from the glass with pungent aromas of jammy red and black fruits, licorice, garrigue, cured meat, cloves and a pinch of bourbon vanilla. Full-bodied, massively concentrated and muscular, it wears its enormous power with style, like a bodybuilder in a taylor-made suit. Only 3,000 bottles produced. (Nicolas Greinacher)

Where It's From
Region / Rhone
Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.
The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.
Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Checking in as a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest a handful of varieties, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape was brought up in a mix of foudre and older barrels. This deep ruby/purple-hued effort has a pure, vibrant, incredibly seamless, medium to full-bodied style that carries classic notes of black raspberry and black cherry fruits as well as peppery herbs, violets, spring flowers, and sous bois. This straight-up gorgeous, seamless, ultra-fine 2019 should be snatched up by readers. It has a rare mix of elegance, purity, and power, and it’s going to have two decades of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Ripe and lush as well as vibrant and fresh, thanks to violet and graphite notes that enhance the corpulent cassis, plum and blackberry preserve flavors. Delivers light tar, anise and roasted apple wood notes on the finish. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
Shimmering ruby. Expressive, mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of garrigue and pungent flowers. Energetic and focused on the palate, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become deeper and sweeter as the wine unfolds. Juicy and sharply focused, displaying strong, spicy lift on the long penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and repeating florality.
Very typical meaty and spicy nose with restrained red and black berries. An elegant, medium-bodied wine (in spite of 15.5% alcohol!) with fine tannins that gently build on the finish. Doesn’t need further aging. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Domaine Roche’s 2019 Cotes du Rhone comes out of the bottle a bit rubbery and tarry, so give it a brief stint in a decanter before serving. Once it’s had some time, scents of black cherries and black olives emerge. Full-bodied, supple and generous, with ample concentration and attractive hints of licorice on the finish, this ripe, mouth-filling red should be a terrific value; the 2018 retails for well under $20. (Joe Czerwinski)
Beautiful black raspberry, peppery herbs, earth, and some chocolate notes emerge from the 2019 Côtes du Rhône. A ripe, pure, beautifully balanced Cotes du Rhone, it has no hard edges and the class to drink nicely for 4–6 years. It’s well worth seeking out and would be one heck of a house red. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The tiny production 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Secret Des Sabon is a field blend of mostly Grenache brought up all in wooden tronconique barrels. It’s closest in style to the Prestige Cuvée yet brings another level of opulence and richness without losing any sense of elegance or class. Blackberries, peppery herbs, graphite, crushed violets, and a liquid rock-like minerality all define the nose, and it hits the palate with incredible depth of fruit, full-bodied richness, and ripe yet building tannins. While the acidity is technically quite low (the pH is 3.8), it holds onto an undeniable sense of freshness and purity. It is just a thrilling, magical wine from this estate. While young and unevolved, with 3–5 years of cellaring required, it is a modern-day legend capable of evolving for over two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Shimmering ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented black raspberry and cherry liqueur aromas are complemented by incense, licorice and potpourri flourishes. Juicy, sweet and impressively concentrated, offering palate-staining red/blue fruit, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Brawny yet surprisingly lithe as well, showing outstanding clarity and youthfully chewy tannins on the strikingly long, floral and spice-tinged finish.
Juicy, dense and packed, yet remarkably defined, with a mix of plum and racy-edged blackberry, boysenberry and raspberry reduction flavors, all laced with a licorice snap thread. Black tea, garrigue and humus accents underscore the finish as the fruit sails through with aplomb. A beauty. Drink now through 2038. 125 cases made, 42 cases imported.
The Sabon family’s 45-acre estate is in the northeast of Châteauneuf, where the soils are sandy and rich in limestone; the oldest vines date to the early 1900s. They are the focus of this cuvée, mainly grenache with an undisclosed amount of other varieties blended in. The details of its vinification are also kept a secret, until its final destination, a single demi-muid barrel. The clarity of the 2019 suggests a light hand in the cellar: It radiates red fruit like sun filtered through a ruby. Underneath, fine-grained tannins gird the juicy fruit and draw out a meaty spice, the wine steadfast and lively at the same time. This will age well but it’s also delicious now, the balance of bright fruit and substantial spice suggesting a match with a paella studded with merguez sausages.

This offers a core of warm plum sauce and cherry compote notes laced liberally with singed sandalwood, red tea and tobacco leaf flavors. Accents of perfumed fruit, singed chestnut and shiso leaf mark the old-school finish, with a lightly dusty structure. Best from 2023 through 2035. 7,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
Bright violet. Expressive aromas of cherry cola, red berries, pungent herbs and lavender, plus a hint of smoked meat in the background. Shows strong, energetic lift to the bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors, which turn sweeter through the back half. Closes with strong tenacity and interwoven tannins that lend discreet, firming grip.
The classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape checks in as 75% Grenache and 11% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with the balance a mix of other permitted varieties. Beautiful blackberry and raspberry fruits as well as spice, Provençal garrigue, and ground pepper emerge from this beauty, and it’s a medium-bodied, character-filled, spicy, complex red to enjoy over the coming 10–12 years or so. Moving to the reds, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône is a smoking good effort offering loads of character in its red and black fruits as well as peppery herbs and leathery aromas and flavors. Liquid Provence in a bottle, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a ripe, rounded mouthfeel, and outstanding length. I’d buy it. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Notes of blackberries, cassis, black olives, dried thyme and licorice. Medium-to full-bodied with creamy but structured tannins. Flavorful finish with strawberries. An excellent Gigondas here. Drinkable now, but better from 2023. (Zekun Shuai)
This Grenache-dominant blend (augmented by a small proportion of Syrah) highlights rich, roasted black-plum and cherry compote flavors accented by streaks of granite and gun flint. Voluptuous in texture and finishing on fine, furry tannins, it’s an immediately enjoyable wine with a spicy char and cinnamon finish. Best now–2026. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)
Deep garnet. Displays aromas of cherry and blackberry, along with hints of woodsmoke and black pepper. Gently chewy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, dark berry and licorice flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spicy finish that echoes the cherry note. (Josh Raynolds)

Bright ruby. Ripe red berries, cherry pie, lavender and exotic aromas show sharp definition and pick up a smoky mineral nuance as the wine opens up. Sweet and seamless in texture, offering concentrated yet energetic raspberry, cherry liqueur, exotic five-spice powder and floral pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Deftly blends richness and delicacy and finishes extremely long and smooth, with repeating florality and polished tannins that add shape and subtle grip.
Based on 100% Grenache, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Pi is another gorgeous wine from this estate. Lots of ripe black raspberry, cherry, and strawberry fruits as well as violets, pepper, and Provençal garrigue emerge on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a round, seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It will evolve for 15 years in cold cellars. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Deep tones of blackberry and preserved raspberry are plump and creamy on the palate of this full-bodied, concentrated varietal Grenache. Ripe yet lifted by veins of crushed salt, stone and peppery spice, this deftly composed, penetrating wine should improve well through 2035.
Fresh and racy-edged, with black cherry, damson plum and raspberry coulis notes racing through, lined with bright acidity and a floral edge before ending with a subtle chalky minerality that gives this balance. Grenache. Best from 2022 through 2030. 250 cases made, 30 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Steeped plum and cherry compote notes are the main themes, though chestnut, sweet bay leaf, singed alder and tobacco flavors all make their presence known. Tar and licorice root accents underline the finish, giving this a toothy, old-school edge. A rock-solid, throwback-style Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,000 cases made, 400 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
The old vine cuvée, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre brought up mostly in foudre, with a small portion in demi-muids. Its deep ruby hue is followed by a stunning array of ripe black raspberry and cherry fruits as well as ground pepper, Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and exotic spices. Beautiful on the palate as well, it’s medium to full-bodied and has a layered, rich, concentrated mouthfeel, building, firm tannins, and outstanding length. The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes looks as if it will be a worthy successor to the awesome 2015 and 2016 bottlings. From tank, the Grenache shows lovely cherry-berry fruit, ample weight and richness and a long, silky finish, while the Mourvèdre from a new oak barrel stood up to the wood well, offering more red fruits, less alcohol and hints of toast and baking spices.
Deeper ruby/purple-colored, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes includes slightly less Grenache than normal and is 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It offers more blackberry, cassis, peppery herbs, and crushed rocks, with a beautiful sense of minerality. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated and focused, it shows an elegant, vibrant side to the vintage yet still has the expected Janasse power and depth. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Saturated ruby. Displays intensely perfumed, spice-accented black and blue fruit, floral oil and candied licorice qualities on the nose. Offers powerful cherry liqueur, black raspberry, fruitcake and exotic spice flavors that tighten up through the back half. There’s surprising energy here given the wine’s volume. Velvety tannins frame a strikingly long, spicy finish that strongly echoes the cherry and floral notes.
Ripe and fresh, with an engaging beam of cassis, dark plum and boysenberry puree flavors, supported by light anise, graphite and sweet tobacco notes. Shows good juicy energy and a seriously long finish. Drink now through 2035. 504 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2–3 years and enjoy over the following 15–20. Don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)
This Grenache is sourced from the sandy soils of two prized vineyards, La Janasse and La Crau. Redolent of rose petals, smoky tea leaves and black cherry, the deeply penetrating wine pulsates through a long, long finish. Matured 12 months in large-format wood, it’s pure in fruit and satiny on the palate. Stunning young, the wine should gain complexity through at least 2040 and hold much further still.
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin looks to be a magical wine in the making. It has everything you could want from this region as well as from Grenache. Revealing a medium ruby/purple, almost opaque color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, loamy soil, peppery garrigue, and flowers, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. This is one of those incredible wines that delivers serious intensity and richness yet stays weightless and is as elegant as they come. It’s going to be approachable with just 2–3 years of bottle age yet will have 20 years or more of longevity.

Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. 390 cases imported.
Up in the top handful of wines in the vintage (which should come as no surprise to anyone who follows this estate), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and layered Châteauneuf that doesn’t put a foot wrong. Made from 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, it offers blockbuster notes of blackberry, liquid-violets, spice and serious minerality to go with awesome mid-palate depth and layers of sweet tannin. Like the Cuvee Chaupin, it will be better in another handful of years and thrill through 2027.
Most likely one of the top 2–3 wines produced, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a rough blend of 80–85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre (which was harvested October 10) and the balance Syrah, that hit 15.4% natural alcohol. Seeing the same elevage as the 2011, it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades. Drink 2016–2032.
Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There’s 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don’t detect any undue heat.
Inky ruby. Blackberry, blueberry and pungent herbs on the mineral-accented nose, with a floral topnote providing lift. Impressively sweet, lush and deep, showing sexy flavors of dark berry preserves, candied lavender and spicecake. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity.

Sandy soils here, delivering fresh peach and banana notes. Some gentle, tropical fruit, too. The palate is bright and crisp with nicely cut, melon and peach flavors. Clairette has taken a bigger role in 2017, ahead of the 30 per cent roussanne and 30 per cent grenache blanc. Drink or hold.
Alluring tobacco, alder and grilled herb notes lead the way, followed by silky mulled cherry and red currant fruit flavors. A sandalwood echo runs through the finish. A charming old-school version that is approachable now. Drink now through 2029. 1,500 cases imported.
The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is 60% Grenache with the balance Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Syrah. It’s a rounded, pretty, elegant 2017 that’s very much in the upfront, forward style of the vintage. Black raspberries, garrigue, spring flowers, and some sappy herb notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, classic cuvée from this estate that will drink well for 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
I tasted a bright, fresh, red-fruited Grenache from foudre that will blended with a blueberry-scented, chocolaty Syrah from barrel and a pretty barrel sample of supple Mourvèdre to create the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape. All showed ample weight, ripe tannins and decent length.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d’Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It’s a full-bodied, silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty, earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.
