Where It's From
Region / Rhone
Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.
The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.
Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).
Country / France
The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.
Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

From one of my favorite estates, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a healthy ruby/plum color as well as a stunning bouquet of red and black fruits, Provençal herbs, lavender, and pepper, with some exotic, meaty nuances. The purity here is straight-up brilliant, and the wine is medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s one heavenly, classic cuvée readers will be absolutely thrilled to have in their cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)
You can think of the red wines of Chateauneuf as being like red Burgundies that are built on a bigger scale, and this wine really fits this description. Concentrated, subtle and silky, it gracefully flows over the palate feeling so much lighter than it really is. There’s a hint of chocolate, but the red fruit aromas dominate right the way to the end of the very long finish. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
Alluring, fresh and floral, with generous strawberry preserves, lilac and steeped plum that turn generous and lustrous on the palate. Offers warm licorice, charred garrigue and iron shavings that add complexity, while satiny tannins bring texture, balance and longevity. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 1,250 cases made, 250 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4–5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
An alluring wine, with a mix of ripe damson plum, red currant and spice cake wrapped around a core of firm iron. Reveals clove and apple wood smoke that add depth and warmth, and the long finish is powered by minerality and grainy tannins. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2024 through 2035. 500 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Galets De La Berthaude also has an earthy undercurrent in its black raspberry, peppery herbs, and leathery aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and nicely textured, with ripe tannins and solid length, this classic, nicely balanced wine will keep for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark and spicy with some wet-earth and violet notes, this is a rich and well-structured Cotes-du-Rhone Villages, in which the black fruit is well married to bold yet supple tannins. Long finish with a certain firmness that suggests this will benefit from some years of further bottle age. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

This has a beautiful texture, harmoniously blending plum sauce, raspberry preserves, charred alder and floral perfume with a fresh, invigorating dusting of white pepper and crushed dried herbs. Delivers an intense undercurrent of mineral, incense and lavender notes that course through the finish, which goes on and on. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 930 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
Vivid ruby-red. Vibrant red fruit, floral and exotic spice qualities on the finely detailed and expressive nose. Shows impressive depth as well as energy to its juicy cherry, black raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors. Closes very long and silky, with slowly emerging tannins and a strong whiplash of sappy red fruit. (Josh Raynolds)
Leading off the Gigondas, the base 2020 Gigondas has lots of black raspberry, ground pepper, and violets notes as well as a round, supple, silky style on the palate. It should be approachable on release, yet it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as tannins, and I have no doubt it will evolve for 20 years if properly stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Boasts bitter plum, raspberry and black cherry reduction notes that have a lively savory, garrigue streak, while grippy-edged tar, tobacco and ganache notes pepper the finish. Muscular and dense but the cut is there, and the fruit core takes a late encore for good measure. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2025 through 2040. 500 cases made, 56 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
As always, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) is a more powerful, mineral-laced wine, offering a fabulous nose of cassis, blackcurrants, ground pepper, Provençal herbs, and cured meats. This full-bodied, concentrated 2020 has incredible purity of fruit, silky yet building tannins, and a great finish. It should round into form with just short-term cellaring and have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Cuvée Tradition
2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Tradition is another sexy, pleasure-bent beauty from this estate that brings plenty of elegance and class. Kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, lavender, and garrigue-like notes all define this medium-bodied, silky, seamless 2020, which has fine tannins and outstanding length. It will drink beautifully over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
