Stylish and silky, relying on higher-toned red currant, cherry and raspberry fruit aromas and flavors, with red tea, savory and subtle mineral details throughout. Features a late echo of worn leather, which adds nice contrast on the finish. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2038. 400 cases made, 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Gorgeous blackberry and black cherry fruits as well as peppery garrigue, camphor, violets, and spicy notes all emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Habemus Papam, a classic, balanced, pure, and elegant Châteauneuf that offers a beautiful sense of freshness and purity while still showing tons of character. Based on 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, partially destemmed, and aged in foudre and clay jars, it’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age and keep for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Mainly Grenache, with the balance a blend of Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone offers up notions of ripe cherries, garrigue and even a few modest hints of pine sap. Medium to full-bodied, it’s concentrated and ripe yet silky and reasonably elegant. Drink it over the next several years.

Notes of blackberries, cassis, black olives, dried thyme and licorice. Medium-to full-bodied with creamy but structured tannins. Flavorful finish with strawberries. An excellent Gigondas here. Drinkable now, but better from 2023. (Zekun Shuai)

This Grenache-dominant blend (augmented by a small proportion of Syrah) highlights rich, roasted black-plum and cherry compote flavors accented by streaks of granite and gun flint. Voluptuous in texture and finishing on fine, furry tannins, it’s an immediately enjoyable wine with a spicy char and cinnamon finish. Best now–2026. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

Deep garnet. Displays aromas of cherry and blackberry, along with hints of woodsmoke and black pepper. Gently chewy and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, dark berry and licorice flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Dusty tannins add grip to a long, spicy finish that echoes the cherry note. (Josh Raynolds)

Also a true gem of a wine, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes includes all three terroirs of Charbonnière, Esqueirons and Galimardes and is all Grenache. It’s a ripe, opulent, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with notes of raspberries, blueberries, Provençal herbs, violets, and flowers. It’s a big, exuberant Grenache offering sweet tannins, a broad, mouth-filling texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes boasts a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a heavenly nose of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, flowery incense, and both red and black fruits. Delivering incredible elegance as well as full-bodied power, it offers silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Two to three years of bottle age are going to be warranted, and it’s going to have two decades of overall longevity. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape in the making!

Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits has a beautiful bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, ground pepper, and floral nuances. With obvious minerality and medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it’s a terrific base cuvée that shines for its elegance and balance. It will keep for 15 years or more. This cuvée comes from eight different parcels and is partially destemmed and aged in foudre and amphora. The blend wasn’t specified. (Jeb Dunnuck)
