Domaine Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Les Champauvins 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 87224

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
Sourced from a plot just a stone’s throw from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Champauvins is consistently one of the best Côtes-du-Rhône bottlings available. Heady aromas of lilac and crushed white pepper introduce a palate that’s powerful yet pure in fruit, packed with flavors of candied raspberry and strawberry leather. Delicate and dusty in tannins, it finishes long on streaks of salt and anise. Lovely young, the wine should improve through 2029 at least. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
The Grenache dominated (there is 30% Syrah) 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Les Champauvins is perfect for readers looking for a wine that over-delivers and won’t break the bank. A great nose of black cherries, currants, roasted garrigue, licorice, and Provençal spice notes gives way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, balanced, straight-up terrific and pleasure-bent Côtes du Rhône that will deliver the goods for 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
Much better than a previously tasted tank sample, the bottled 2019 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is another successful vintage for this perennial overachiever. Mulberries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied, softly dusty palate is concentrated and pure, finishing on long-lasting notes of red berries and salted licorice. (Joe Czerwinski)

Where It's From

Appellation / Cotes du Rhone

View more wines from Cotes du Rhone

Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Nicely rendered, with waves of warmed cassis, plum pâte de fruit and raspberry reduction rolling through, carried by polished structure and laced with subtle threads of anise, red tea and sanguine. Ends with a sneaky long finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2022 through 2036. 1,100 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021
This blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre is a showcase of Grenache’s easy, juicy blackberry and preserved-strawberry flavors accented by a brambly, peppery edge of Syrah. Matured in a combination of French oak and inert vessels, it keeps primary, youthful fruit at the forefront but maintains a depth and solidness of structure. Freshly balanced in acidity and finishing on fine, furry tannins, it’s ready now–2029. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
Based largely on Grenache (there’s 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Domaine Barville offers a ripe, sexy, incredibly attractive style revealing loads of candied black cherry and strawberry fruits, notes of nori, iron, and pepper, ripe, supple tannins, and a great finish. Brotte consistently turns out impeccably made, balanced wines, and this is no exception. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Attractive plum cake, licorice and spices. Some positive dry tannins on the full-bodied palate, where there is also quite lively acidity. Slightly drying at the meaty finish. Drink or hold.

Mainly Grenache, with the balance a blend of Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone offers up notions of ripe cherries, garrigue and even a few modest hints of pine sap. Medium to full-bodied, it’s concentrated and ripe yet silky and reasonably elegant. Drink it over the next several years.

Also a true gem of a wine, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes includes all three terroirs of Charbonnière, Esqueirons and Galimardes and is all Grenache. It’s a ripe, opulent, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with notes of raspberries, blueberries, Provençal herbs, violets, and flowers. It’s a big, exuberant Grenache offering sweet tannins, a broad, mouth-filling texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Even better, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes boasts a deeper ruby/purple color as well as a heavenly nose of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, flowery incense, and both red and black fruits. Delivering incredible elegance as well as full-bodied power, it offers silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Two to three years of bottle age are going to be warranted, and it’s going to have two decades of overall longevity. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape in the making!

A fragrant and intense nose of dark cherries, plums, dried lavender, spice and cigar box. A full-bodied Chateauneuf with solid, fine-grained tannins that build on the palate with a grip at the end. Focused and flavorful with real harmony. Drink or hold. (Zekun Shuai)

Blackberries, ripe cherries, graphite, and peppery herbs all emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Caparaçon, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, classical Châteauneuf to drink over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is in the top 2–3 wines in the vintage. Possessing rock-star concentration and depth, full-bodied richness and loads of sweet tannin, it offers layers of ripe blackberry, graphite, licorice and toasted-spice aromas and flavors. One of the more powerful and structured efforts in the vintage, it nevertheless always stays balanced, graceful and light on the palate. Give it 2–3 years and enjoy bottles through 2027.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015
Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed bouquet of ripe dark berries, potpourri and sandalwood, with a mineral note adding vibrancy. Round and seamless on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a strong jolt of candied rose. Quite suave and approachable, finishing with solid punch, gentle tannins and lingering spiciness.
ST91+91–93 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Inky ruby. Strongly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, blueberry, violet and smoky oak. Seamless and sweet, offering plush dark berry compote flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. Becomes spicier with air and finishes long and gently tannic, with clinging sweetness and a hint of licorice.
