Domaine Giraud Grenaches de Pierre Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 94078

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
From centenarian Grenache vines grown on sandy soils in La Crau and Pignan, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre is a perfumed beauty, redolent with hints of fennel, roses, orange zest and ripe cherries. Matured solely in concrete, there’s no oak influence, just a purity of fruit expression borne on a full-bodied but nearly weightless palate. Silky and long on the finish, this tour de force should still be drinking well in a decade.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 18, 2020
This has a nice sleek core of cassis and cherry paste flavors that show tension and cut, while notes of sandalwood, red tea and garrigue filter in throughout. A long, subtle sanguine thread laces up the finish. Approachable, but there’s also lots of intrigue that bodes well for cellaring. Drink now through 2036. 250 cases made, 70 cases imported.

Another beautiful wine from this family estate, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre comes from a sandy portion of the famed La Crau lieu-dit (near Charbonnière) and is all Grenache brought up in tank and demi-muid. It too reveals a lighter ruby color as well as a heavenly perfume of dried flowers, incense, herbes de Provence, and peppery garrigue as well as kirsch and framboise-like fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a seamless texture, it’s ideal for enjoying any time over the coming 10–12 years, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it age a little longer. Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Lively cherry and raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of baking spices, lavender and white pepper. Smooth, focused and appealingly sweet, offering spice-laced red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors that tighten up slightly on the back half. A zesty mineral note appears on the red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by supple, even tannins.

From vines throughout the region and a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah brought up all in concrete, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône comes from a collaboration between Michel Chapoutier and 3-star Michel Chef Yannick Alleno. It has a perfumed bouquet of ripe black cherries, blackberries, garrigue, and chocolate. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Côtes Du Rhône that has a distinct saltiness, beautiful fruit, and a great finish. It seems to always over-deliver. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP89+89–91 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The 2018 Cotes du Rhone is a 70-30 blend of Grenache and Syrah, all matured in tank. It shows appealing blueberry and cherry fruit, even a hint of apricot or peach. Ripe and supple, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a long, silky finish. Nicely done.

Lovely raspberry and blackberry purée notes stream through here, with anise, black tea and mineral notes keeping pace throughout. Silky in feel and lengthy on the finish, with the fruit echoing. Drink now through 2032. 1,200 cases made, 300 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Moving to the 2018s from bottle and based on 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah brought up mostly in tank, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as a classic bouquet of black cherries, black licorice, spice, and a touch of Provençal garrigue. It’s medium to full-bodied, has a beautiful texture, the upfront, front end-loaded style of the vintage, and should be drunk in the first decade of life or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Vivid ruby-red. Bright and energetic on the fragrant nose, displaying spice-accented red and blue fruit and floral qualities and a hint of herbacity. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering sappy raspberry and boysenberry flavors that deepen slowly through the back half. Closes long and spicy, with repeating florality and round, even tannins that come in late. (Josh Raynolds)

Cristia’s 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts scents of cola, garrigue, raspberries and black cherries. Mainly tank-aged Grenache, with small amounts of barrel-aged Mourvèdre and Syrah, it’s medium to full-bodied, moderately concentrated and dusted with ripe tannins. The house style is one of sandy-soil elegance, and that’s reflected in this entry-level cuvée, which finishes long and silky. (Joe Czerwinski)

WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2021
The flagship wine of de Nalys sourced from the famed La Crau vineyard, this powerful, complex red highlights Grenache augmented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Vacarèse. Matured partially in oak, it offers black-plum flavors muted by shades of earth, sun-scorched garrigue and a lingering vein of salty minerality. While soft in tannin, the wine needs time to tease out its smoky, stony nuances. Drink 2028–2040.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
A bright savory note leads off this red, followed quickly by sanguine and bay leaf accents, all melding nicely with the core of steeped blackberry, raspberry and plum fruit flavors as they move through the rich, licorice root–tinged finish. Best from 2022 through 2035. 1,000 cases imported.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The best offering from this property I can remember, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Grand Vin leads with knockout aromas of garrigue, raspberries and stone fruit. It’s full-bodied, loaded with explosive levels of fruit that buffer the silky tannins, and includes a vivid sense of tension that gives the finish drive and length.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Deep ruby. Red and blue fruit, garrigue, pungent floral and exotic spice aromas show fine definition and mineral lift. Juicy black raspberry, boysenberry and candied lavender flavors deepen through the back half, with no loss of energy. Closes with emphatic, spicy thrust on the penetrating finish, which features even tannins and resonating floral and blue fruit notes.

This is really alive, with a burst of kirsch, plum and blackberry notes leading off, followed by waves of black tea, melted black licorice and warm fruitcake. Long and lush through the finish, but maintains detail and energy. Best from 2021 through 2034. 200 cases imported.
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
There’s a single foudre of the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape, and it’s all destemmed Grenache from the sandy soils of the Font de Loup and Saint Georges lieux-dits. Kirsch, blackberries, orange zest, and flowery incense notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that offers a layered, seamless texture, building tannins, and a great finish. This classic, elegant wine has loads of character and is another example of a great terroir in the hands of incredible winemakers.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020
Coming from cooler, sandy soils and all Grenache, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a medium ruby/purple hue to go with perfumed notes of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, flowery incense, and orange blossom. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a seamless texture, ripe, silky tannins, and a great finish. It’s not a blockbuster, but it just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness and has beautiful length on the finish. Enjoy this elegant, nuanced 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020
All Grenache from the lieux-dits of la Crau and Font du Loup, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape is relatively light in color, but don’t mistake that for being light or wimpy. Black cherries, red raspberries and hints of plum combine on the nose with hints of garrigue and licorice, while the full-bodied palate is silky and elegant despite being labeled at 15.5% alcohol. There’s ample length and no perceptible heat on the finish, but I’d still opt to enjoy it over its first 6–8 years or so.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Shimmering ruby. Expressive, mineral-accented raspberry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice and pungent flowers. Seamless in texture and well-concentrated, offering sweet red berry and cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors and building spiciness. Rich yet energetic in style, finishing with fine clarity, repeating florality and harmonious tannins that sneak in late.

Enticing, with bright, engaging raspberry, cherry and red currant fruit infused with gently roasted sandalwood and apple wood, garrigue and licorice root notes. A swath of tobacco underscores the finish, giving this an old-school hint. Best from 2020 through 2040. 2,500 cases made.

Made from 50- to 80-year-old vines, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape offers tremendous purity for an entry-level cuvée. Pine and rosemary notes accent bright cherry fruit in this full-bodied, creamy textured and lush example of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The assemblage is 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Enjoy it over the next decade.

Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre is all Grenache from old vines and sandy soils brought up mostly in tank. A rock star Grenache-driven bouquet of kirsch liqueur, licorice, Provençal herbs, flowery incense, and spice gives way to a full-bodied 2019 with brilliant tannins, a seamless texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Its balance as well as purity of fruit are just about off the charts, and this is heavenly Châteauneuf du Pape all the way. I think it will offer plenty of upfront charm, but smart money is on 2–3 years of bottle age and following it over the ensuing 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
