One of the gems in the vintage is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, and it’s about as beautiful an example of old vine Grenache as I could imagine. Sporting a deep purple color as well as a huge perfume of blackberries, black raspberries, garrigue, crushed flowers, and exotic spices, it hits the palate with a wealth of fruit, a stacked mid-palate, awesome purity of fruit, and a finish that won’t quit. Made from 100% old vine Grenache from the sandy soils of the Cristia lieu-dit, aged in one-third new barrels, it has a certain accessibility even today but will be at its best in 2–4 years and keep for 15+. It’s the finest wine ever made by Baptiste and readers need to find bottles of this elixir! (Jeb Dunnuck)

Even better (although in a very different style), the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes comes all from very old Grenache vines planted all in sandy soils. This behemoth offers awesome notes of blueberries, plums, violets and spring flowers, with hints of sandy/loamy/soil notes developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied, fat, unctuous and hedonistic, it stays balanced lively and fresh on the palate, with no weight. Sign me up. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Ripe, but bright and fresh, with a lively mix of raspberry, red currant and bitter plum coulis flavors streaming in, pulling light tea, singed sandalwood and anise notes along. Shows lovely detail and well-embedded acidity through the finish. Drink now through 2035. 600 cases made, 150 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
The pure Grenache 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes reached 16.5% alcohol yet carries it really well, showing just a trace of warmth. Cola, cedar and black cherry notes lead into a plush, full-bodied wine with supple tannins and remarkable length. Although it may age past a decade, there’s no real reason to defer gratification.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
Limpid ruby-red. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of cherry liqueur, Chambord and candied flowers, along with a subtle floral quality that gains strength with air. Energetic red berry and bitter cherry flavors are complemented by mocha and licorice flourishes that take a sweeter turn on the back half. Youthful tannins lend grip to a long, focused finish that strongly echoes the cherry and floral notes.

I didn’t taste the straight Chateauneuf du Pape from 2016, but the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes certainly looked special out of a one-year-old demi-muid. It’s a big, plush, dark-fruited wine, with some chocolate notes and a velvety feel.

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Gorgeous, with warm ganache and steeped plum aromas enlivened by bright anise and floral hints, leading into a core of raspberry, blackberry and plum fruit that is pure and racy through the lengthy finish. Dense but sleek, showing great cut and drive. Best from 2020 through 2045. 56 cases imported.
RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
I tasted the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape le Secret de Sabon blind, alongside the other 2016s from this fine estate, and failed to discern a huge difference between it and the impressive Prestige or Reserve bottlings. I don’t doubt that time will prove my rating to be conservative, hence the + sign. Winemaker Didier Négron retained some stems in this cuvée, and they show for the moment in its slightly herbal-minty notes, but they’re balanced by ripe Grenache fruit that suggests apricot and plum. Lavender and thyme join in on the creamy, lush finish of this full-bodied but elegant offering.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2018
Lurid ruby. Ripe red berries, cherry liqueur and hints of musky herbs, vanilla and potpourri on the highly perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Palate-staining Chambord and cherry flavors show excellent clarity, supple texture and a hint of spicecake that builds slowly as the wine opens up. The energetic, seamless, impressively long finish repeats the floral and red fruit notes, while rounded tannins add shape and gentle closing grip.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts scents of roses, raspberries and mint and follows those up on the palate with flavors of cherry, rosemary and thyme. It’s full-bodied and creamy in texture, pairing a lot of green notes with balanced red fruit and a long, silky finish.

Limpid ruby-red. Ripe red and blue fruits, candied flowers and a hint of garrigue on the fragrant nose. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors sharpened by a snap of spicy white pepper. Supple tannins add gentle grip to a long, spicy finish that echoes the blue fruit note. Aged in a combination of concrete vats and demi-muids.

Enticing, with bright, engaging raspberry, cherry and red currant fruit infused with gently roasted sandalwood and apple wood, garrigue and licorice root notes. A swath of tobacco underscores the finish, giving this an old-school hint. Best from 2020 through 2040. 2,500 cases made, 550 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Made from 50- to 80-year-old vines, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape offers tremendous purity for an entry-level cuvée. Pine and rosemary notes accent bright cherry fruit in this full-bodied, creamy textured and lush example of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The assemblage is 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Enjoy it over the next decade.

JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/26/2018
While not yet bottled, the 2016 Vacqueyras Les Ceps D’Or appears to be one of the top wines from the appellation. Made from mostly Grenache, with a splash of Mourvèdre, it boasts sensational notes of red fruits, flowers, forest floor, and hints of limestone-like minerality. This medium-bodied, finesse-driven effort has more than a passing resemblance to a Grand Cru Red Burgundy and does everything right. It’s going to drink beautifully for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Brilliant ruby. Fragrant aromas of fresh red and blue fruits, spicecake and candied flowers, along with an emerging smoky element. Silky and seamless in texture, offering concentrated and surprisingly energetic black raspberry and boysenberry flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Closes sweet, gently tannic and impressively long, delivering emphatic red fruit and a clinging floral pastille note.
RP90+90–92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
The prospective blend of the 2016 Vacqueyras les Ceps d’Or contained an elevated level of carbon dioxide, which made it difficult to evaluate. I expect it will perform better from bottle. It’s full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich mouthfeel and complex spice notes layered over ripe fruit.

Not yet bottled, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is all very old vine Grenache from the sandy soils of the Cristia lieu-dit. Brought up in demi-muids and a mix of new and used barrels, it gives up a rocking bouquet of blackberries, ripe cherries, licorice, toasted spices, and violets. It’s gorgeous on the palate as well and is medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s rock star stuff that I’d buy in a second. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2024
Concentrated but not weighty, this has an ethereal quality to its attractive licorice, cherry pie and fragrant incense notes, shored up with chalky tannins and a dusting of graphite that offsets the warmth. Beautifully textured, with bitter plum and mineral notes alternating with holiday spices and apple wood smoke stretching out across the finish. Drink now through 2040. 100 cases made, 35 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2023
Entirely made from old vine Grenache, the 2020 Châteaureuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes turned out well. It delivers pungent aromas of raspberry jam, strawberry compote, red and black plum, dried herbs, licorice, cloves, wood smoke and vanilla. The oak-derived aromas and flavors are very much up-front and will require some time to integrate. It’s impossible to ignore the underlying high quality, however, confirmed by ever-so-velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. (Nicolas Greinacher)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, May 22, 2023
The intense clove aroma is at the outer edge of typicity for this appellation. However, this Chateauneuf is simultaneously savory, dry and surprisingly elegant through the long balsamic and spicy finish. A pure grenache. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
RP90+90+? pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Sep 2023
Aged in a fair bit of new oak (roughly one-third new barrels, one-third demi-muids and one-third older barrels), the pure Grenache 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes carries notes of vanilla and toasted coconut alongside hints of plum, cola and stone fruit. It’s full-bodied, framed by some slightly drying wood tannins and has a dusty finish. (Joe Czerwinski)
