Domaine de Beaurenard Chateauneuf du Pape Le Boisrenard 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98611

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
The flagship from this great estate is the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Boisrenard, which is based on 80% Grenache and small doses of 17 other varieties. This deeply hued beauty offers a stunning bouquet of blackberries, scorched earth, licorice, ground pepper, and sappy garrigue. I always find a Burgundian-like texture on this wine, and the 2020 is no exception—this is one to put into a blind tasting of Grand Cru Red Burgundies and shock your friends. Medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, with grippy, sappy tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish, it’s pure class all the way. It’s going to need at least 4–6 years of bottle age, but this is a wine you don’t want to miss, and one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This very impressive Chateauneuf has stacks of black fruit aromas and stunning tannin structure, with a very long driving finish that’s plush and fresh. A cuvee of 80% grenache with all the other varieties that the appellation allows. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Boasts beautiful red currant, licorice and spice cake flavors that are concentrated and rich, yet balanced by salty minerality, earth and fresh pepper highlights. Shows smoke and singed sandalwood that fill in the backdrop, while graphite laces the still-grippy finish. This needs a bit of time to unfurl. Best from 2024 through 2035. 188 cases made, 38 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

A smaller production cuvee, the 2019 Rasteau Les Argiles Bleues is more purple hued and has a primordial bouquet of blue fruits, scorched earth, new leather, lavender, and violets. A serious, full-bodied Rasteau, it stays in the focused, elegant style of the vintage yet packs plenty of muscle on the palate, has loads of structure, and a great finish. Hide bottles for 2–4 years and enjoy over the following decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Ripe and structured, with a graphite underpinning supporting a core of dark cherry, blueberry and plum compote flavors. The racy-edged finish has dark tea and anise notes filling in. Should develop nicely in the short-term as well. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2026. 400 cases made, 80 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Checking in as a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest a handful of varieties, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape was brought up in a mix of foudre and older barrels. This deep ruby/purple-hued effort has a pure, vibrant, incredibly seamless, medium to full-bodied style that carries classic notes of black raspberry and black cherry fruits as well as peppery herbs, violets, spring flowers, and sous bois. This straight-up gorgeous, seamless, ultra-fine 2019 should be snatched up by readers. It has a rare mix of elegance, purity, and power, and it’s going to have two decades of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2021
Ripe and lush as well as vibrant and fresh, thanks to violet and graphite notes that enhance the corpulent cassis, plum and blackberry preserve flavors. Delivers light tar, anise and roasted apple wood notes on the finish. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
Shimmering ruby. Expressive, mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of garrigue and pungent flowers. Energetic and focused on the palate, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become deeper and sweeter as the wine unfolds. Juicy and sharply focused, displaying strong, spicy lift on the long penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and repeating florality.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, February 9, 2022
Very typical meaty and spicy nose with restrained red and black berries. An elegant, medium-bodied wine (in spite of 15.5% alcohol!) with fine tannins that gently build on the finish. Doesn’t need further aging. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
A second consecutive winner from this fine estate, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is 66% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 6% Cinsault and 3% of the other permitted varieties. Grilled red plums lead off, fleshed out by other ripe stone fruits. Full-bodied and plush, it’s creamy in texture through the mid-palate, then long and silky on the finish, where it picks up hints of Asian five spice powder.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2019
Fresh and racy in feel, with a focused beam of red currant and raspberry coulis flavors entwined with red licorice details. The finish picks up extra shiso leaf, garrigue and iron notes. Solid. Best from 2020 through 2035. 35,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Deep bright-rimmed ruby. Deeply perfumed, smoke-accented aromas of cherry liqueur, boysenberry and garrigue are complicated by potpourri and allspice flourishes. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors and a touch of candied flowers. Supple tannins build slowly on a long, focused finish that leaves floral and spice notes behind.

JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Boisrenard is a Grenache-dominated field blend (80%) that also includes 15 other varieties. Brought up all in foudre, it boasts a dense purple hue to go with a sensational, full-bodied, multi-layered array of red and black currants, toasted spice, peppery garrigue, and new leather-like aromas and flavors. Slightly tighter and more backward than the classic cuvée, this warrants 4–6 years of bottle age and will be incredibly long-lived. Is this even better than the 2001 and 2016? (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
Rich and ripe, offering an alluring smoky edge throughout. Layers of warmed plum preserve and cherry compote roll through, picking up tobacco and warm earth notes along the way. Drink now through 2034. 188 cases made, 38 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, March 21, 2022
Deep nose of damson plums and black cherries with subtle spice and tobacco-leaf aromas. Rich and concentrated with a ton of healthy tannins that beautifully support the full body, the mineral acidity lighting up the long finish. From 70 to 100-year-old vines of all the 13 varieties allowed for this appellation. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022
The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Boisrenard is 80% Grenache, with the balance a mix of the other permitted varieties. Fermentation took place in wood (including a small proportion of new barrels), with maturation in foudres. Scents of mint and garrigue accent black cherries and plum on the nose, and I thought I detected a hint of charred oak as well (tasted blind). Full-bodied, rich and velvety, this is a thickly textured, concentrated beauty, with a long, mocha-tinged finish. While it could use a year or two to soften, it should drink well for more than a decade. (Joe Czerwinski)

From one of my favorite estates, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers a healthy ruby/plum color as well as a stunning bouquet of red and black fruits, Provençal herbs, lavender, and pepper, with some exotic, meaty nuances. The purity here is straight-up brilliant, and the wine is medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s one heavenly, classic cuvée readers will be absolutely thrilled to have in their cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, May 22, 2023
You can think of the red wines of Chateauneuf as being like red Burgundies that are built on a bigger scale, and this wine really fits this description. Concentrated, subtle and silky, it gracefully flows over the palate feeling so much lighter than it really is. There’s a hint of chocolate, but the red fruit aromas dominate right the way to the end of the very long finish. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Alluring, fresh and floral, with generous strawberry preserves, lilac and steeped plum that turn generous and lustrous on the palate. Offers warm licorice, charred garrigue and iron shavings that add complexity, while satiny tannins bring texture, balance and longevity. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2032. 1,250 cases made, 250 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

This has a beautiful texture, harmoniously blending plum sauce, raspberry preserves, charred alder and floral perfume with a fresh, invigorating dusting of white pepper and crushed dried herbs. Delivers an intense undercurrent of mineral, incense and lavender notes that course through the finish, which goes on and on. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 930 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Vivid ruby-red. Vibrant red fruit, floral and exotic spice qualities on the finely detailed and expressive nose. Shows impressive depth as well as energy to its juicy cherry, black raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors. Closes very long and silky, with slowly emerging tannins and a strong whiplash of sappy red fruit. (Josh Raynolds)
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022
Leading off the Gigondas, the base 2020 Gigondas has lots of black raspberry, ground pepper, and violets notes as well as a round, supple, silky style on the palate. It should be approachable on release, yet it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as tannins, and I have no doubt it will evolve for 20 years if properly stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)
