This has such rich and delicious fruit. Ripe dark-berry and plum aromas and flavors run riot here. Very succulent and such great value, too. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Rasteau La Bastide is ripe and chocolaty, full-bodied and creamy-textured. A blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, it’s almost dessert-like, with a rich, velvety finish that lingers on the palate.

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

My favorite of the single vineyard cuvées in 2017 is the Gigondas Hominis Fides, which comes from a vineyard just across the street from Le Claux. It has a killer nose of exotic flowers, freshly crushed rocks, new saddle leather, flowers, spice, and violets. Possessing full-bodied richness, an incredibly sexy, seamless, yet powerful style, and an awesome finish, it’s unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Full vivid ruby. Highly expressive, mineral- and spice-driven aromas of ripe red berries, potpourri and incense show sharp definition, and suggestions of candied lavender, cola and vanilla build in the glass. Shows impressive depth as well as energy on the palate, offering powerful raspberry, cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors and an emerging suggestion of exotic spices. Finishes with a jolt of juicy acidity, alluring sweetness and harmonious tannins that lend shape to a wonderfully long, spice- and floral-drenched finish.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Alluring, featuring a wave of crushed boysenberry, raspberry and black currant fruit that melds with tar, roasted tobacco, alder and dark earth notes as this moves along. A sleek sanguine accent and fine acidity skirt underneath, giving this subtle lift and cut. One for the cellar. Best from 2021 through 2035. 215 cases made, 37 cases imported.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
More peppery and floral than it was looking last year from barrel, the 2017 Gigondas Hominis Fides is another gorgeous Gigondas from the talented Louis Barruol. Boasting vibrant cassis fruit and hints of dark chocolate, this full-bodied, velvety-textured wine is a real beauty, showing terrific harmony and elegance on the finish.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
Somehow managing to be rich, dense and chocolaty — almost fudge-like — yet remaining fresh and vivacious, it will be fascinating to see how the 2017 Gigondas Hominis Fides develops over the next year.

A blend of Grenache (90%) and Mourvèdre (10%) fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel, this perfumed, blossomy red shines a spotlight on lustrous boysenberry and raspberry flavors. Sourced entirely from sandy soils, it’s full-bodied but oh-so-soft and airy. Fine, feathery tannins make it gorgeous in youth, but it’s concentrated enough to drink well through 2030. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
This is the prettiest version of this cuvée I can remember tasting. As always, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige Tres Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre from several sandy lieux-dits, and it will spend around three years in tank prior to bottling. At the moment, it’s showing delicate garrigue notes and kirsch on the nose, ample weight and creamy tannins on the mid-palate, then folds in complex notes of tea and dried spices on the long finish. Promising stuff.

Deep lurid ruby. Highly fragrant suggestions of ripe red berries, cherry preserves, exotic spices and candied flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral element that builds steadily with air. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry cola, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that convey a suave mix of power and delicacy. Closes smooth, gently tannic and impressively long, leaving sappy red fruit and floral pastille notes behind.
JD94+94–96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - September 26, 2018
More full-bodied, with incredible purity in its aromatics and fruit, the 2017 Gigondas Le Poste is another 100% Grenache cuvée that’s from a slightly higher elevation, terraced vineyard near the domaine. As with all the cuvées here, it’s not destemmed and is brought up mostly in used barrels. Offering lots of black currants, spice box, graphite, and licorice, it builds beautifully on the palate, has great concentration and intensity, and a blockbuster finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The old vine cuvée is the 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes, based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that’s brought up in older barrels. Blackberries, toasted spice, smoked earth and licorice notes all flow to a rich, powerful, concentrated Rasteau that has ripe, present tannins and a great finish. It’s certainly going to be an outstanding wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020
Densely concentrated plum and black cherry flavors are muted by savory notes of crushed earth and tobacco and in this full-bodied blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It’s a rounded, open-knit wine that’s showing glimpses of maturity, so it’s best to enjoy now–2024. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

Deeper colored, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin comes mostly from the Chaupoin lieu-dit yet always has small parts from La Janasse and a sandy part of the La Crau lieu-dit. Blackberries, ground herbs, graphite, and new leather notes all emerge from this concentrated, rich, powerful wine that stays tight, focused, and elegant on the palate. It’s a killer wine, but it’s going to need time. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 28, 2018
The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin (100% Grenache) comes from the northern part of the appellation, mostly from the lieu-dit of the same name. A small part comes from the La Janasse lieu-dit as well as La Crau (this cuvée gets the sandy part of their vines in La Crau). It’s a beautiful, elegant barrel sample that has classic notes of black raspberries, kirsch, pepper, and some crushed rocks. Only partially destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudre and demi-muids, mostly neutral, it’s full-bodied, has remarkable purity, a decidedly floral character, and a great finish.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The all-Grenache 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is sourced from sandy soils and ages in a combination of foudres and demi-muids. It shows more structure than the regular cuvée, supporting the ripe raspberry and blackberry fruit with bright acids and velvety tannins. Full-bodied and rich, it’s long, picking up hints of licorice on the finish.
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
A tank sample of the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin (Grenache) showed terrific concentration, crisp acids and firm tannins. It lacks the prettiness and charm of the 2016, but it should still turn out excellent.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2019
Warm cherry and plum paste flavors form the core, with melted red licorice, singed balsam and grilled herb notes. Reveals a gentle tug of earth at the very end. A strong effort for the vintage. Drink now through 2034. 504 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

The only 2017 red that had been bottled at the time of my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Laurent B is 80% young-vine Cairanne and the rest Plan de Dieu, a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cinsault and Mourvèdre that sees no wood. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and fruity, with cherry and blueberry fruit that’s juicy, delicious and silky on the finish. “We’re looking for drinkability,” says Brusset.

A blend of 50% Grenache and 25% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with a portion of the Mourvèdre and Syrah aged in barrel, the 2018 Gigondas les Hauts de Montmirail features hints of dark fruit, leather, cedar and baking spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied, rich, creamy and concentrated, finishing lush and long, with hints of cocoa and garrigue on the finish.
