Domaine de Colonat Morgon Les Charmes 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 93653

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
The Domaine de Colonat’s 2018 Morgon Les Charmes reveals a generous bouquet of cherries and raspberries, followed by a rich, layered palate that’s framed by an ample chassis of velvety tannins. It was entirely destemmed and raised in cement tanks.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2020
Spice and bright fruits show well in this full, rich wine. Tannins give the wine a dry core that contrasts with the bold berry flavors. The wine will age well, so drink from 2021.

Where It's From

District / Beaujolais

View more wines from Beaujolais

Technically, Beaujolais is part of France's Burgundy wine region. However, because the grapes used in Beaujolais and styles produced differ so dramatically from the rest of Burgundy, most in the wine business consider them as separate regions. Gamay is Beajolais's primary grape, and it produces wines that are best consumed in the same year they are produced. The most famous style is Beaujolais Nouveau, which often arrives in the US near Thanksgiving time and represents the first wines of the year's harvest.

Region / Burgundy

View more wines from Burgundy

In eastern France lies the region of Burgundy, one of the legendary wine regions of the world. Burgundy, home to some of the most expensive wines in the world, is famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. And the reigning white of Burgundy, Chardonnay, can vary incredibly in style depending on where it was produced within the region.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

This shows so much bright, grapey fruit with citrus undertones. Granite and ash undertones. Medium to full body. Vivid acidity and focus. Reminds me of the excellent 2015, but slightly more acidity tension. Drink now.

Bright purple. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red/dark berries, incense and potpourri are complemented by a licorice nuance that builds with air. Shows sharp delineation and floral lift on the palate, offering sappy black raspberry, butter cherry and spicecake flavors that deepen and become sweeter on the back half. Finishes long and youthfully tannic, with strong, floral- and blue-fruit dominated persistence. (Josh Raynolds)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
A mineral-driven red, with wild raspberry, tangerine and wild herb flavors matched to white pepper, floral and capsicum accents. Light tannins provide texture on the finish. Nice purity and freshness. Drink now through 2023. 450 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)

From a high-altitude parcel on blue volcanic rock, the vines planted in 1946, this Juliénas has the reductive stink of a natural Beaujolais, its flavors as savory as a black-olive tapenade. The fruit is ripe and brisk, the tannins salty and dry. Give it a year or two for the tannins to relent and the complexity of the wine to show.

A selection from 40-year-old vines growing in granite soils with manganese, this wine fermented with some whole clusters (20 percent) and then aged for 16 months in stainless steel. That élevage preserved the generous depths of fruit in the wine, floral up front, edged with bright tannins and green-peppercorn spice in the end. A bold and zesty 2018, this will benefit from a year of bottle age.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
The light tannins are beautifully textured and encase vivid raspberry and currant flavors matched with woodsy spice, licorice and floral details. Undertones of mineral and spice sail through the tangy finish. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
A blend of Gamay from three vineyards, this wine offers rich tannins and generous black fruits. Juicy and already delicious, the wine, matured in tank, celebrates fruitiness. Drink now.
