Region / Veneto

View more wines from Veneto

Veneto, in northeastern Italy, is home to some of the most celebrated Italian wines, including Amarone red wines. The cities Verona and Venice fall within Veneto, and the areas surrounding Verona in western Veneto is where you'll find Amarone and Valpolicella production. Western Veneto also produces some fantastic white wines, like Soave. Meanwhile, the eastern part of Veneto has something worth celebrating, as well, as that's where Prosecco comes from.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

A harmonious, medium- to full-bodied red structured by creamy tannins, with a zesty thread of milled pepper and anise enlivening mulled black cherry and black plum reduction. Reveals hints of stemmy herbs, dark chocolate and fresh earth that linger on the juicy finish. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2030. 12,000 cases made, 4,600 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

A very well-made Amarone that shows good poise and dryness on the palate, with black chocolate, cigars, dark raspberry jam, wax and graphite. Lots of silky, melted tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate, before an elegant and dry finish. Excellent length. Sustainable. Still needs some time for extra complexity to come through. Drink after 2023. (James Suckling)

Dark cherries, blackberries, mussels, licorice, figs and some finely ground black chocolate, following through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with elegant berries and a bittersweet black-chocolate note. A refined, textbook Amarone that shows great poise and modern drinkability. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

There’s an exotic flair to the 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant’Urbano as foreign spices, dusty dried roses, red currants and blood orange hints form its bouquet. This is supple and enveloping with stimulating acidity that adds an energetic feel, as tart cherry and raspberry fruits drench the palate. Its minerality comes through in the finish, almost salty in character as grippy tannins saturate, yet the wine remains amazingly fresh. The 2018 is wonderfully balanced and potent, a total success for the vintage. (Eric Guido)

Ripe and crunchy blueberries and plums here, together with hints of chocolate, bark and walnuts. Medium-to full-bodied with a fine, chalky tannin structure and vivid acidity. Rich and intense, with delicious dark-fruit character and notes of wet leaves and spices to close. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
