The 2019 Chaminé Tinto is an unoaked blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Aragonez, with Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira for the rest. It comes in at 13.9% alcohol. This is quite a nice Chaminé this year, filled with flavor and very fresh, yet showing rather good concentration for the style as well. It doesn’t have much power; to be sure, it’s a “drink me now” wine pretty much every year. Aging this is not the point. Drink it very young, no matter how long it theoretically lasts, when its glorious freshness coupled with its purity allows it to be all it can be. This could be a nice choice as a summer red. It can do well a few degrees cooler than normal, and it’s not heavy.

Portugal is most famous (and justifiably so) for its Port wines, fortified wines that are typically sweet and often served with dessert. Port wines come in many styles such as Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, etc, and are classified by how they were produced.

Besides Port, however, Portugal is also one of the fastest-rising wine countries in the world (as far as quality and production) when it comes to table wines. You'll find some unbelievable values in Portuguese table wines, with grapes like Touriga Nacional at the forefront.

The 2019 Tinto is a blend of 40% Aragonez, 30% Alicante Bouschet, 20% Trincadeira and the rest Castelão, all aged for 12 months in an equal mixture of stainless steel and used French oak. It comes in at a fairly hefty 15% alcohol this year, but the wine handles that surprisingly well. As I’ve said with certain other labels, the stainless steel probably helps avoid jamminess here. Fresh and even a little silky, this is a gorgeously textured regular Tinto that caresses the palate with velvet. There’s average depth in terms of mouthfeel, and the tannins are ripe enough to make this easy to drink now. Overall, this is a very nice bargain in the lineup. It may not age quite as well as some others and it may not be quite as intriguing as some of the newer labels, but it has nuance on the flavor profile and the same elegance we are finding elsewhere in the lineup these days for way less money. Bargain hunters take note. If there’s a key difference, I would say it is a bit more fruit forward and flavorful than some of the others. Some consumers will consider that an advantage, to be sure. It’s ready to drink, but it should hold for most of the decade, more or less. It’s not clear, though, if extended aging will produce many great rewards. It is still worth leaning up on this today. A blend of four grapes, including Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet, gives this estate wine density and fine concentration. Ripe dark-berry fruits play with tannins and wood-aging flavors in a power ful wine that will age further. Drink from 2023. (Roger Voss)
