JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
So aromatic and fresh with dried flowers, sweet tobacco and hints of straw. Red fruit, cloves and green peppercorns. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins that are very fresh and refined. Fine, silky and beautiful. Hints of minerals and granite to the dark fruit. Such gorgeous length and beauty. 64% carmenere, 18% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. Extremely long and poised. Cooler wine. From biodynamically grown grapes. Delicious to drink already, but another three to four years will make it even better.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
There is a lot of Carmenere character on the nose of the 2018 Clos Apalta, which was produced with 64% Carmenere, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot, a blend that is similar to the one used in 2016. The wine is not shy at all and hits the scale at 15% alcohol. It’s showy, heady, hedonistic, aromatic, full-bodied and lush with abundant velvety tannins and a long and powerful finish where the notes of black peppercorns and tea and tobacco leaves dominate. This might not be a wine for everybody, but fans of the style will love it. 92,748 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

There is a subtle complexity on the nose with currant, berry, fresh herb and wet earth aromas. Cut fresh flowers, too. Full body, dense and powerful. Incredible character here with such purity and polish. It goes on for minutes. Formed, sculptured yet soulful. A monumental wine for Chile. Unbelievable. More powerful than the 2014 which was 100 points. A blend of 46% carmenere, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2022.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Sep 2018
Despite the warm and dry character of the year, I find the 2015 Clos Apalta, a blend of 57% Carménère, 26% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, to be less marked by the Carménère and with more integrated oak and better freshness. There is more Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s spicy and herbal while ripe and powerful, full-bodied and with plenty of dusty tannins. It has a strong personality, and I find more balance here. 73,452 bottles produced.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019
Rich and refined, with lively spice and white pepper accents to the mouthwatering flavors of blackberry, currant and dark plum. Dark chocolate and cardamom notes emerge midpalate, showing a creamy texture. Minerally details grace the vibrant finish. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2025. 6,121 cases made.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 97805

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The 2018 Le Petit Clos, a second wine born in 2014, was produced with a blend of 53% Carmenere, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot from organically and biodynamically certified vineyards even if the bottled doesn’t carry the seals. It’s ripe and powerful with the Apalta signature, earthy and stony. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and matured in French barriques for some 22 months. It’s full-bodied with a lush texture and round tannins, a softer version of the 2016. 89,472 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
A medium-bodied red with blackberry, red-berry and spice aromas and flavors. It’s chewy and polished with a medium finish. Dried flowers to the fruit at the finish. Tight and reserved now. Drink in 2022 and onwards.

The 2019 Le Pétit Clos from Apalta, Colchagua, was aged for eight months in new French oak barrels, and then 14 months half new and half second used ones. Dark purple in the glass, it delivers an intricate nose of gentle pyrazine aromas such as jalapeño as well as blackberry, blueberry and other dark fruit over a mild, well-integrated bed of oak. In the mouth, it’s vigorous with a rich, expansive flow while the wood provides heft and underlines the jammy flavors. An elegant red that from an the excellent year. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2023
An elegant, open-textured and well-contoured blend, offering alluring balsam, cassis and dark chocolate notes that fold over onto the rich palate. Picks up crushed red currant and espresso-laced berry flavors, which have great depth and linger effortlessly around suave tannins, echoing back to the core flavors. Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 3,499 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2022
The second wine from Clos Apalta, the 2019 Le Petit Clos was produced with a blend of 49% Carmenere, 30% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot from granite soils. VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2019 Clos Apalta from Apalta, Colchagua, was aged for 24 months in 90% new French barrels. Dark purple in the glass. The complex, nuanced nose offers mild notes of mint, pyrazines, ash and ripe dark fruit such as blackberry and blueberry with hints of undergrowth and tobacco, cedar and other aromas from the aging process. In the mouth, it’s indulgent and compact initially with refined, slightly reactive, young tannins, an expansive flow and a rich palate that delivers herbal flavors before the sustained, fruity finish. The good year has helped to enhance the depth of an already accomplished red with a well-proven ripe style. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2022
The 2019 Clos Apalta was produced with a blend of 70% Carmenere, 18% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, extremely high in Carmenere and low in Cabernet Sauvignon in a ripe and warm year. It fermented with indigenous yeasts for four to five weeks, with manual punch-down of the cap, 67% in 7,500-liter French oak vats and 33% in new French oak barrels followed by malolactic in new French oak barrels. The élevage was 24 months in 90% new barrels and 10% second use. It’s powerful, big and ripe, with 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.57. It’s creamy and juicy, with very high ripeness and a notable absence of herbal notes; it’s oaky, smoky and decadent, coming through as luxurious, round, lush and velvety. It’s full-bodied and has abundant, small and powdery tannins. 103,944 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Ends with mineral twinges, firming tannins and a final wave of kirsch and chocolate. Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 8,662 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
