Casa Castillo La Tendida 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98199

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
The 2020 La Tendida is a new wine from 85% Monastrell from younger vines in the paraje (lieu-dit) La Tendida within the property and 15% Garnacha from seven-year-old plants on a north-facing slope on sandy limestone soils covered in gravel in 2020. Here, they changed the concept, prioritizing location of the vines instead of age, so they used younger vines but from better soils. So, this is a different wine from the Vino de Finca, and some of the old vines that had been used for the Vino de Finca go back to the basic Monastrell instead of coming here. Like most wines in this pure Mediterranean vintage, it fermented with 25% to 30% full clusters and indigenous yeast in underground stone pools with a short to medium maceration and temperatures up to 32 degrees Celsius. The wine spent 12 months in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter oak vats. Most wines in 2020 are around 14.5% alcohol and have a medium pH of 3.55 and mellow acidity (4.85 grams, measured in tartaric acid per liter). It’s young and tender but more elegant, subtle but nuanced and very precise. The wine is medium-bodied, the tannins are very fine and there is a sensation of fragility but with energy and strength, a red with light. Very Casa Castillo. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

The 2020 Monastrell is pure Monastrell in this exceptional vintage for the grape (in previous years it had up to 20% Garnacha, but there was little Garnacha in 2020). The grapes come from sandy vineyards on the valley floor, and they fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and a shortish maceration. The wine matured in 500-liter oak barrels and 5,000-liter oak vats for nine months. In 2020, there were more grapes from old vines that were used before for the Vino de Finca, which was discontinued. This wine is very aromatic, elegant, expressive and reaching a level I have not seen before in this wine. It’s refreshing, light, balanced, nuanced, with velvety tannins and very clean, really transcending its price point. Balanced is the word, and it’s also available and affordable and sets the tone for the 2020s. 186,000 bottles produced. There are different lots of this wine from the same master blend. I tasted the first bottling from October 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
The phenomenal 2020 Las Gravas was produced with 92% Monastrell from 30- to 40-year-old vines on north-facing gravel soils (hence its name) complemented with 8% Garnacha. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in underground stone lagares and matured in a combination of 500-liter barrel and 5,000-liter foudres for 16 months. It has classical parameters, 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.47 and 4.87 grams of acidity per liter. The wine is super perfumed and floral, really showy, elegant, nuanced and refined, with the notes of pine needles and wet soil much subtler than in the 2019. There is an ethereal character to the 2020s that I haven’t found in any previous vintage here, but at the same time, the wines are very mineral and have lots of energy and light. There is precision, cleanliness, definition and elegance like I hadn’t seen before and refined tannins with a pungent mineral sensation in the textured finish. This is an incredible wine for the price asked. 35,500 bottles produced. There was a single bottling in February 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Rich and fruity, but also deep, with ripe blackberries, figs, spice and dark chocolate on the nose. Just a hint of dried fruit here. This is restrainedly generous with a medium to full body, showing creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. A very solid monastrell. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink now.

Meaty black fruit, black pepper and some sweet spices. Juicy and flavorful with full body, rounded by a mouthful of resolved tannins. Long and spicy finish. An outstanding monastrell that shows great value, too. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

There is a big jump in depth, complexity and nuance between the Monastrell and the 2017 Vino de Finca, which is a blend of Monastrell with almost 25% Garnacha. This comes from four plots that were selected from what was previously used for the entry-level Monastrell; they aim was to find a wine with more finesse and elegance but with the inherent power of the zone. This is only the third vintage for this cuvée, and it feels quite established and different from the rest of the range; it has less varietal character and is more about the place, getting closer to the single-vineyard bottlings where they do not search for fruit character. The idea here is to ferment at temperatures that are quite so low and to stabilize the wine in oak barrels for a long-ish time (12 months in 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter oak foudres). They are wines of sun and limestone. This is a good reflection of it with a perfumed and floral note on the finish (elegance!) that is quite remarkable. 31,000 bottles produced in 2017. It was bottled in November 2018.

Casa Castillo El Molar 2020 / 750 ml.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
The perfect Mediterranean vintage produced an outstanding Garnacha. The 2020 El Molar fermented with 35% full clusters and matured in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter foudres for one year. The wine is very young and tender; it feels more delicate despite having a little more alcohol than the 2019 (it’s 15%) and with a slightly lower pH (3.49). It’s super aromatic, extroverted and expressive, floral, elegant and complex. There is great balance, and the wine feels fresher and less ripe; it’s refreshing and has a core of minerality and super fine tannins with pungent flavors. There is precision, elegance and balance, the three words that define the vintage. All the wines are very good value, but this is a steal. 40,000 bottles were filled in March 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
