Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.
Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2020 L’Esprit des Pavots is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc and 29% Merlot, with 72% Knights Valley fruit and 28% Oakville fruit. Opaque ruby in color, it has pure, layered scents of red plum and cherry, mint chocolate, rose petals, soy sauce and cedar. The full-bodied palate features restrained, mineral-driven fruit and loads of floral character. It has abundant, finely grained tannins, energetic acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Drinkable straight from the bottle, enjoy it over the next 5–7 years. 1,161 cases were made. This will be released in July of 2023. (Erin Brooks)
Inky red with a purple tinge, the 2020 L’Esprit Des Pavots is brooding with spice, black cherry preserve, forest earth, and black licorice. It’s full-bodied, rounded, and gushing with boysenberry, with a balance of sweet fruit and savory Sonoma character in its notes of tea leaf, wildflowers, and lightly toasted spices. Long on the palate, with ripe tannins and a good finish, it’s attractive now and will drink well over the next 10 years. (Audrey Frick)
A fleshy and rich red with crushed berries, green pine needles, bark, orange peel and bark. Hints of walnuts, too. Full-bodied with round and polished tannins that are integrated and solid. Second wine. Drinkable now, but I would give it another two to three years of bottle age. (James Suckling)

A very polished cabernet sauvignon with currants, chocolate, and hazelnut. It’s medium- to full-bodied with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Very long. The texture and flavor stays with you for a long time. One for the cellar but fun to taste. Better after 2025.

A floral lift to the baked blackberries, with lots of iodine and dried-lychee notes. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, with very silky and seductive tannins that drive the palate to a juicy finish. Drink or hold.
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve reveals more lifted, slightly volatile aromatics of plums, candied violets, and leafy herbs. Uber-ripe and concentrated, with quality tannins, it’s a solid, enjoyable Oakville effort to drink over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Friendly and forward, with a mix of melted licorice, steeped plum, menthol and savory notes that haven't quite melded yet, though a tug of loam through the finish brings some focus in the end. Not for the long haul, but this does need to settle in. Best from 2024 through 2029. 1,150 cases made. (James Molesworth)
