Valravn Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 93413

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) offers up copious jammy dark fruit, espresso, chocolate, cloves, licorice and new leather. Juicy and flamboyant to the core, the 2019 will fit the bill for readers looking for an affordable, succulent Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)
WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Lush, toasty oak richness meets astringent tannins in this warm, spicy cabernet. As the wine opens, the green edge of the tannins turns into an asset, pointing up mineral notes, suggesting this will benefit from a year in the cellar.

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Passion is another brilliant value and possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon with 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, from a mix of vineyards, it’s a full-bodied, round, straight-up sexy red that has lots of black fruits as well as notes of leafy herbs, chocolate, and earth. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This sports a toasty edge, but there’s a good gush of warmed cassis and steeped plum behind that, while the finish offers a lush, flattering feel as it picks up licorice and fruitcake hints. Drink now through 2032. 1,580 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Aromas of red currant, ripe red cherry and crushed thyme. Medium bodied with silky tannins. Lovely bright acidity and fresh character on the palate. Refreshing finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)

The 2019 Passion is a racy, voluptuous Napa Valley offering from Jean-Charles Boisset. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, white chocolate and new oak are all kicked up in this exuberant, full-throttle red. Passion is not a shy wine, but it certainly delivers the goods. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve is blended with 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot and was matured for 15 months in 30% new French oak. It has a deep ruby-purple color and pretty accents of cinnamon, violet, leather, dried herbs and bitter chocolate complementing cassis fruit. The full-bodied palate is concentrated yet fresh, with finely grained tannins, pure flavors and a very long finish. Give it another 3–5 years in bottle. 30,000 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022
Classic aromas of cedar and spice emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve, followed by notes of black cherry fruit and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and fruit-forward, with blackcurrant, fresh soil, and cocoa powder. Ripe tannins emerging from the fruit, and the wine has a fairly long finish. Drink it now or over the next 8 years. (Audrey Frick)
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 2, 2022
Solid, with a core of steeped plum and blackberry fruit lined with singed cocoa and tobacco accents. Modest in scale, but nicely balanced. Drink now through 2025. 35,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The 2018 Zinfandel is racy and exuberant, with tons of varietal character. This stylish, budget-friendly red hits all the right notes. Succulent red fruit, mint, cedar and sweet floral notes flesh out in a delicious, affordable wine that over-delivers — big time.
