Tolaini Picconero | Tenuta Montebello 2009 / 750 ml.

Item#: 77190

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Aug 2013
Styled after the great wines of Bordeaux, the 2009 Picconero represents a blend of Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the estate’s Tenuta Montebello. The wine opens with an inky dark appearance and follows to the nose with dark fruit, blackberry preserves, prune, tobacco and leather. Again, like the other wines of this estate, what really stands out is how elegantly these wines perform in the mouth. Picconero is tight and structured, but never heavy or sticky. Lingering tones of cigar box and Indian spice add complexity to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2025.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2020 Valdisanti is superb in this vintage. Rich, dark and sumptuous, this blend is alluring right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, grilled herbs, leather, new oak, licorice and mocha are nicely dialed up. The 2020 is opulent, not at all heavy. The 2020 is a gorgeous Valdisanti. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Sep 2023
The Tolaini 2020 Valdisanti is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a vineyard called Tenuta San Giovanni. This is an especially intense and smooth red blend that shows impressive and seamless integration. You get the dark intensity of both grapes used in the blend framed by the sweet spice and toast of aging in French oak. This vintage carries especially broad shoulders and offers extra richness. Some 55,000 bottles are hitting the market in the fall of 2023. (Monica Larner)

The 2020 Al Passo is a powerful, deep wine. A blast of dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, dried herbs, leather and menthol makes a strong opening statement. This heady, internationally-styled wine has a lot going on. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. The Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend works especially well. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
A rich style, this red boasts ripe cherry, blackberry, black currant, wild herb and spice flavors aligned with a supple texture. Fresh and tangy, with a long, resonant finish. Harmonious, this is accessible now with decanting or aeration, but no rush. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2028. 11,000 cases made, 7,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Sep 2023
A blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2020 Al Passo offers soft lines and lots of rich fruit with black cherry, blackberry and light spice. This vintage does not have the clarity or precision of a cooler vintage, but it does offer good volume and upfront intensity. Production is 110,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

An impressive red of breadth and depth, featuring black cherry, plum, leather, earth, iron and cedar aromas and flavors. This is solidly built and well-balanced, with finely honed tannins and lively acidity providing backbone. Best from 2021 through 2040. 15,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Apr 2021
Here’s a fun Tuscan red with what appears to be a jazz or R&B pianist depicted on the front label, oozing all kinds of Millennial appeal. The Tolaini 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Legit plays the role thanks to the legitimate darkness, sultriness and suppleness of the mouthfeel. Dark fruit and blackberry are followed by light spice, earth and tobacco. This is a balanced and fruit-forward red that will jazz up any steak-frites dinner served in a tavern with cigar smoke hanging heavy, if such a thing exists any more. And while it may not be priced perfectly for the walk-up, top-floor Brooklyn set, this wine is definitely “on point.”
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
A bold, juicy wine, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Legit offers plenty of immediacy. Dried herbs, tobacco and blackberry give this mid-weight Cabernet a good deal of aromatic complexity to play off its mid-weight structure.

Tolaini Picconero | Tenuta Montebello 2015 / 750 ml.

Tenuta Montebello
2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96154

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Sep 2019
The 2015 Picconero Tenuta Montebello is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc that pours out lots of dark fruit and plum. This is a very nice, juicy and balanced wine with good thickness, a great match for iron steak and blue cheese butter sauce. In general, I’ve found these wines from Tolini to be top notch, with succulent tones of ripe fruit and pretty intensity. This one is at the top of the pyramid, and I’m guessing 2016 in particular could be even better. They released about 9,000 bottles of this vintage.

Aromas of violets, lavender and blackberries follow through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins. A lot of wood showing now, but will come together with age. Try after 2021.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2019
Packed with sweet, ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit, this red is lush and polished, accented by rosemary, thyme, graphite and oak spice notes. Dusty tannins line the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2033. 800 cases made, 150 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2015 Picconero, 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, is powerful and super-concentrated in feel. Dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, leather, licorice and smoke flavors abound. I admire the wine’s depth and overall persistence, even if the tannins are likely to always be equally prominent. This is a decidedly heavily-extracted style. It is possible the formidable tannins will soften in time.

Pretty aromas and flavors of currants, asphalt and bark fill the glass. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Unfiltered. Drink in 2024 and onwards.

A polished red, this offers plum, blackberry, black currant, leather and a hint of wild herb aromas and flavors. Balanced and harmonious, with refined tannins gracing the long, iron-tinged finish. Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2018 Legit is a bold, punchy wine that marries varietal aromas and flavors with Castelnuovo Berardenga richness. It’s a combination that works quite well. Blue/black fruit, gravel, spice, dried herbs, lavender and chocolate are front and center in this juicy, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2018
This is a 100% expression of Sangiovese that was fermented in large oak casks and aged in stainless steel (for six months) followed by 16 months in tonneaux. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette is truly elegant and beautiful despite everything you may have heard about this challenging vintage. The wine reaches for a level of finesse and nuance that can only be achieved when the winemaking team is pushed to obtain the highest quality despite adverse conditions. The fruit is generous, round and supple. Delicate notes of licorice, cola and crushed rock add to the complexity. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
