When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 21 months in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Gandona is a sexy, powerful red offering lots of chocolatey dark fruits, notes of scorched earth, tobacco, and graphite, full-bodied richness, and a layered, impressively textured mouthfeel. There are only 400 cases produced, but it’s well worth seeking out. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Feb 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 21 months in French oak, 60% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up gregarious notes of crushed blackberries, ripe black cherries and blackcurrant cordial with hints of mocha, bay leaves and black licorice plus a waft of cedar. Big, concentrated, full-bodied and jam-packed with black fruit flavors, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and layered. 400 cases were made. JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/26/2023
The same blend as the 2017, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is another impressive, medium to full-bodied Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from this team. Cassis, graphite, chalky minerality, and iron, as well as some classic Howell Mountain bouquet garni-like notes, all define the aromatics, and it’s balanced, has ripe tannins, and lots of minerality on the finish. Give it another 2–3 years and enjoy through 2038+. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a potent Howell Mountain wine. Crushed rocks, gravel, lavender, spice, black cherry, crème de cassis, and chocolate give this brooding Cabernet plenty of character. The muscular tannins need a bit of time to soften, but this is impressive, especially for a project that is just getting started. (Antonio Galloni)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, April 8, 2024
Dark-fruited and earthy nose with black cherries, blackcurrants, ground spices, nutmeg and wet earth. Full-bodied, firm and structured, with a powdery texture to its tannins. A little chewy at the end. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Blended from portions of Sycamore, Bosché and another vineyard, Freemark Abbey’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford features scents of cassis, plum and hints of dark chocolate on the nose. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, matured in 55% new French oak, it’s full-bodied, dusty and firmly built. There’s even more structure here than in the Oakville bottling, yet the wine remains elegant on the lengthy finish. (Joe Czerwinski)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is vibrant and super-expressive right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, plum, chocolate licorice and spice are pushed forward. Dollops of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc add dimension, especially in the aromatics. This energetic Cabernet has so much to offer. (Antonio Galloni)

JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
I was blown away by the 2018 M by Michael Mondavi, an incredible wine based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. Deep, full-bodied, and opulent, yet with perfect balance and a seamless, layered mouthfeel, it has beautiful darker fruits, notes of leafy herbs and chocolate, perfectly integrated oak, and silky tannins. This majestic, flat-out awesome wine will evolve for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Classy cabernet characters with red chili pepper, cassis and tobacco with some cocoa powder, incense and fine spices to the ripe plum and blackberries. Refined and precise, with a medium to full body teeming with blackberries. A natural, supple acidity is rounded by plenty of dusty tannins, Shows restraint and elegance in its long, subtle finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2018 M Red Wine is an excellent wine, with classic scents of ripe cherries, cedar and vanilla alongside faint sage-like herbal shadings. It’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and smooth, with a gentle sweep of softly dusty tannins across the finish. Nicely done. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A ripe, polished style, with currant, plum and blackberry preserves lined with mocha-accented toast, sweet tobacco and melted licorice. Stays reserved in feel overall and relies a bit on the toast, but there’s ample fruit in reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2034. 400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
Blackberry, blueberry, pine cone and pine needle with some mushroom. So complex. Full bodied with incredible depth and length. Layered. Super balance and strength, yet formed and not overdone. Harmony for Howell. Try in 2026. (James Suckling)
RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain was aged in French oak barrels for 22 months, 97% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls effortlessly out of the glass with notes of warm cassis, black cherries, mulberries and plum preserves plus hints of dark chocolate, crushed rock and tree bark with a waft of truffles. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with earthy/savory black fruit layers and super firm, rugged tannins, delivering a tightly wound, lively finish. Give it a good 5 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years. 1,001 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
This really packs in some serious plum paste, cassis and black cherry pâte de fruit notes, all wrapped in brambly grip and laced with mouthwatering anise and iron notes. There’s a tarry underpinning on the finish, with a deftly inlaid roasted apple wood note. Nicely set up for the cellar. Best from 2023 through 2038. 1,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Lastly, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is another backward, brooding wine that’s going to need bottle age. Dark chocolate, graphite, wood smoke, violets, and lead pencil notes as well as ample red and black fruits dominate the bouquet, and it’s rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, with ripe tannins and a big, rich, chewy finish. This is classic Howell Mountain Cabernet, with serious tannins, yet ample mid-palate depth and length. Hide bottles for 4–5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Magic Nights is laced with inky dark fruit, licorice, crème de cassis, chocolate, sweet spice and licorice. I would give the tannins a few years to soften, but there is a lot to like and to look forward to here. This is an especially potent expression of Stags Leap, and it works so well. Winemaker Chris Tynan draws fruit from across all the Lede estate parcels. As always, this series, known as “Rock Block” (with a name that changes each year) is especially luscious. (Antonio Galloni)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2021
This is a robust, deeply concentrated wine, richly layered and densely textured in red fruit, crushed rock, sage and cedar. Grippy tannins reveal its youthful vigor and relative restraint that is not ready to rush out of the gate quite yet. Let the power deepen and develop further in the cellar and enjoy from 2028–2038. (Virginie Boone)
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Nov 2020
Blended of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Magic Nights prances out of the glass with showy notes of crème de cassis, blueberry coulis and chocolate-covered cherries plus hints of garrigue, pencil lead and beef drippings. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with muscular, energetic black fruits, supported by firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Another beautiful wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Magic Nights checks in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot. Revealing a deep, opaque purple color as well as classic Cabernet notes of ripe black and blue fruits, smoked tobacco, scorched earth, and graphite, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a stacked mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, and a great finish. This is s complete, balanced, satisfying Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers ample richness as well as complexity. I would be happy to drink bottles any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Blackberry, dried-blueberry, bitter-chocolate and some volcanic-ash and burnt-orange aromas. Crushed stone and subtle vanilla notes, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins framing a deep core of dark fruit. Dense, muscular and firmly structured. So long. Goes on for minutes. Elegance with power. Really love the beautiful refinement and integrity to this. Captures the essence of the vintage. Try from 2025.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The very deep, purple-black colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It takes a fair amount of swirling to unlock an incredibly intense nose of dark chocolate, warm cassis, baked plums and Morello cherries plus touches of red roses, violets, pencil shavings, cinnamon stick and dusty soil with a hint of iron ore. The full-bodied palate is so exquisitely elegant, charged with electric black and red fruits and a firm frame of super-ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and very perfumed. This is pure energy in a glass!
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2021
A benchmark for the vintage, thanks to its gorgeous display of warm cassis, mulled plum and macerated blackberry fruit stitched with subtle loam, juniper and bay leaf accents, in a reserved style. Warm earth tones reverberate through the lengthy finish, dovetailing perfectly with the suave fruit. A real beauty. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,790 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Readers looking for a killer Cabernet that won’t break the bank should check out the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Carbone from Favia. This dense purple-hued beauty boasts classic cassis and blueberry-like fruit intermixed with lots of tobacco, lead pencil shavings, violets, and spring flower nuances. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet with a great mid-palate and the class to evolve for 10–15 years. It’s well worth seeking out. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Carbone Cabernet Sauvignon is a bright, effusive wine. Sweet red berry fruit, mocha and a whole range of floral/savory aromatics burst from the glass. Medium in body and inviting, the 2018 drinks well now, but it also has the vibrancy to develop nicely in bottle. Carbone is the second wine of Favia.

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
A pure, balanced and fresh Napa cabernet that is not just showing heady concentration and dark fruit. Here you get some violets, nimble flowers, redcurrants, graphite and fine spices. Some oranges, too. Fragrant and nuanced. Medium to full body with tight yet refined tannins. Rather linear, tense and elegant, but lacking neither power nor definition. Better to give it a few years to deliver more complexity. (James Suckling)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
Deep black-currant and blackberry flavors come with a warm, rounded texture bolstered by fine-grained tannins in this concentrated and mouth-filling wine. Hints of mint and dark chocolate enhance the aroma and continue through the finish. Best 2025–2035. (Jim Gordon)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
Lots of ripe blue fruits, sappy herbs, and some background minerality as well as a touch of oak emerge from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet from this estate that’s drinkable today yet will evolve for 15–20 years in cold cellars. It’s one for the old school Cabernet lovers out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Another perfect wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon IX Estate is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, all from the estate on Pritchard Hill. A monster of a wine that needs serious bottle age, it reveals a dense purple hue as well as a mineral-drenched bouquet of pure crème de cassis, charcoal, spring flowers, tobacco, and earth. Just incredible on the palate, it’s full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with remarkable purity and a finish that won’t quit. Cabernet – or red wine for that matter – doesn’t get any better! It needs a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. but this legendary wine will see its 50th birthday in fine form. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2018 IX Estate is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal earth and mineral scents of iron ore, tilled soil, forest floor and truffles with ripe red and black currants, kirsch, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus nuances of tar, lilacs and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and exhilarating freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit. Mineral and savory accents linger long into the epic finish. A thought-provoking, pensive, mesmerizing wine.
VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 IX Estate is dense, powerful and brooding. Inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, spice infuse the IX Estate with tremendous character. All of the savory intensity that is typical of this site comes through, and yet the richness of the fruit is palpable. Readers will find an exciting, viscerally thrilling wine that hits all the right notes. In 2018, the IX Estate is truly lights out. It is also the darkest and most concentrated of the three Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 2, 2021
Extraordinary aromas of black truffles, blackberries, bark and violets. Essence of blackberries. Then it goes to crushed stones and pine needles. Aromatic perfection. Full-bodied with well framed tannins and beautiful dark fruit. Superb finish and intensity. Mountain character. Tannic at the end. Cooler and fresher undertone. 77% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 8% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Try after 2027.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
A broad, lush style, with a big wave of warmed cassis and plum reduction flavors rolling through, yet this settles relatively gently rather than crashing through the finish, thanks to well-embedded, loamy grip and an alluring backdrop of roasted alder, bay leaf and licorice root notes. A wine that walks softly but carries a big stick. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2040. 1,650 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Full bodied and jammy tasting, this wine also has a layer of astringency — possibly from the bourbon barrels — so it comes off more dry and puckery than many others. Raspberry and red cherry combine with floral and mineral accents.
