Where It's From

Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

From one of several properties owned by the Chanfreau family in Listrac, this wine is firm, structured and has a core of dry, dark tannins. Its black fruits are also right there, waiting to burst through as the tannins soften. It will be a rich, perfumed wine with a good future. Drink from 2024.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, February 3, 2019
A beautiful young wine with vivid, blackcurrant and dark-berry character and hints of hazelnuts. Medium body with a lovely core of ripe fruit, yet it remains vivid and bright. A blend of 62 per cent merlot, 37 per cent cabernet sauvignon and one per cent petit verdot. Try from 2021.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2018
The 2016 Lestage has a well defined and focused bouquet with attractive cedar and tobacco-laced black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, and well judged acidity. The finish is quite poised and elegant making the Listrac appellation proud. This is a well-crafted wine. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.
RP88+88–90 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
The 2016 Lestage has an attractive bouquet: black fruit laced with cedar and a hint of hickory, quite focused with well-integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a fine line of acidity, quite linear with a pleasant salinity towards the finish. It does not possess the detail and precision of the top Bordeaux, but there is commendable length to this Listrac.

This property owned by the Edmond de Rothschild family, has long led the pack in Listrac. This vintage, still maturing, is an example of the elegance and great style to be expected from the estate, especially in a fine vintage. The wine’s black currant fruits, issuing from the 70% Merlot in the blend and the tannins both need time. Drink from 2025. (Roger Voss)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, February 3, 2019
Currant and cherry aromas are underlined with iron and rust. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and chewy yet polished and poised. Tension and style at the end. A blend of 70 per cent merlot and 30 per cent cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2022. (James Suckling)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/28/2019
The 2016 Château Clarke has some obvious oak but makes up for it with ample fruit. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with loads of black cherry and cassis fruit intermixed with graphite and leather, it has solid purity, medium body, fine tannins, and impressive length on the finish. It’s a serious wine from Listrac to enjoy over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Pretty, featuring a pure beam of dark cherry and currant fruit that has melded nicely with the singed alder, tobacco and dark tea notes. Has a polished feel overall, with an echo of dark earth in the background. Drink now through 2022. 16,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

A firm and round-textured red with juicy plum and chocolate character and a medium finish. Shows richness and ripeness for a second wine. Better after 2021.

The Merlot-dominated 2016 By Clinet (there’s 5% Cabernet Franc) is a charming, already delicious effort that gives up elegant notes of chocolate-laced plums and dark fruits, notes of leafy herbs and truffle, medium to full body, and a layered, charming mouthfeel. It’s a terrific Bordeaux to drink over the coming 7–8 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Light black cherry and plum pit notes are infused with a hint of tobacco. Merlot. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 10,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Wow. The blackberry, dried-flower and orange-peel aromas are so impressive at first, but then they go to black truffle and wet earth. Full-bodied with a solid core of powerful yet fine-grained tannins. It goes on for minutes. A very muscular La Fleur-Pétrus. Drink after 2025.
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/28/2019
The 2016 Château La Fleur-Petrus is more regal and elegant, with an incredibly floral quality in its red and blue fruits, crushed rock, forest floor, and graphite-tinged aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied, rich, layered effort has notable structure, integrated acidity, beautiful balance, and a rock star finish. This is pure class and a thrilling La Fleur Petrus that needs 4–5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 2–3 decades.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2018
Blended of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the medium garnet-purple colored 2016 la Fleur-Petrus reveals stunning Black Forest cake, redcurrant jelly and wilted roses scents with underlying suggestions of pencil shavings, yeast extract, dark chocolate and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the mid-palate possesses superb intensity and depth with layers of perfumed black fruits and loads of red fruit sparks framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing on a lingering earthy note. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2016 La Fleur-Pétrus soars out of the glass with striking aromatics. Light on its feet yet also quite fleshy, the 2016 has so much to offer. Blood orange and floral notes add brightness to the red-toned fruit in this silky, beautifully nuamced Pomerol. The 2016 is rich, dense and spectacularly beautiful, with a persistent, saline-drenched finish that makes it hard to resist a second taste. (Antonio Galloni)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2019
This wine comes from a large (for Pomerol) 46-acre vineyard. It has weight and density as well as dark tannins and rich black fruits. It shows great style with its beautifully integrated tannins. This wine will age well, ready to drink from 2025. (Roger Voss)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019
Ripe and warm in feel, with an alluring mix of creamy textured cherry, red currant and raspberry reduction notes, mixed with black tea and incense accents. Features a buried spine of graphite, with a hint of Turkish coffee lurking at the very end. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,100 cases made. (James Molesworth)
