When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A well-rounded Chardonnay with a great combination of fruit and florals that elevates the overall drinking experience. Enjoy notes of green apple, lemon, lime, just-ripe apricot and mango and a hint of baby’s breath. (Stacy Briscoe)

Secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors lead this varietal Merlot with notes of dried violets, coffee, toasted wood, dried cherry, prune and leather. There’s just enough acidity to keep the wine alive and balance against the chalky tannin structure. (Stacy Briscoe)

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 4, 2022
Plummy aromas of redcurrants, ripe red cherries and licorice. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Well-ripened fruit with floral and herbal character. Juicy and delicious. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
Matured in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak (30% new), the 2019 Heritage Collection Merlot offers up aromas of black cherries, brown sugar and leather. Sourced primarily from Calistoga, with contributions from Oakville and Howell Mountain, it’s medium to full-bodied, soft and supple, with gentle, cocoa-powder tannins on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, March 6, 2023
Aromas of currants, chocolate and oak tree. Medium to full body. Medium-round tannins and a juicy finish. A blend of 91% cabernet sauvignon with petite sirah, petit verdot, malbec and merlot. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
The entry point into Sterling’s Cabernet lineup is the 2020 Heritage Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak, it’s a plump, easygoing effort, medium-bodied and loaded with black cherries. Soft, supple and easy to drink, it’s surprisingly clean (seemingly smoke-free) and juicy; just a good, solid drink that finishes with some gentle tannins. (Joe Czerwinski)
