Sloan | Napa Valley Red Wine 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 94477

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
Moving to the grand vin, the 2016 Proprietary Red is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Tasting like a mix of the 2013 and 2014 with its incredible elegance and power, it reveals a deep purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of crème de cassis, crushed violets, lead pencil, and unsmoked tobacco. Ethereally textured, seamless, and full-bodied, it builds incrementally on the palate and is a monster of a wine that somehow stays light, graceful and elegant. It should hit maturity after a decade of cellaring and be a 40- to 50-year wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP97+97–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Dec 2018
This is a barrel sample blended of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, to be bottled the first week of February 2019. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Proprietary Red opens with fragrant notions of candied violets, chocolate box and baking spices with a core of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums and blackberry compote with touches of garrigue and menthol. Full-bodied, rich and packed with black fruits sparked by tons of cinnamon and cloves accents, it has a firm, velvety-textured frame and great freshness, finishing with epic persistence.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2016 Sloan is dazzling. Soft and unctuous with no hard edges, the 2016 Sloan is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Sweet red plum, blood orange, spice, menthol and licorice are all melded together in a gorgeous, racy Cabernet Sauvignon that hits all the right notes. Unlike most top 2016s, Sloan can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, although its true potential will only be unlocked with at least a few years in bottle. Spice, star anise, pomegranate and sweet red cherry overtones add an exotic flair.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, January 27, 2021
A big, rich Sloan with chocolate, walnut, meat, cherry and plum. It’s full-bodied and very layered with intensity and richness. Very ripe, but remains solid and focused. A touch of alcohol on the finish. Still needs time. Try after 2024.

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019
Moving to the reds, the 2016 Red Blend O.P.C. checks in as 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Malbec, 24% Syrah and 4% Merlot brought up in 60% new French oak. It has some detracting ethyl acetate but packs terrific cassis, cherry and blueberry fruits, hints of spring flowers, lead pencil, and graphite, medium to full body, and a mouthfilling, sexy, pure texture. Drink it any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 Red Blend O.P.C. is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah and Merlot. Creamy, voluptuous and super-inviting, the O.P.C. will drink well with minimal cellaring. The blend varieties works nicely to soften some of the tannic clout of the Cabernet, which in turn allows the lush fruit — always a signature of these super-expressive, generous wines — to shine through.
RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
The 2016 Proprietary Red Blend O.P.C. is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Malbec, 24% Syrah and 4% Merlot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up tons of earth-inspired scents — tree bark, tilled soil, underbrush and fungi — with a core of blackberries and blackcurrants plus hints of tobacco and bay leaves. Full-bodied, firmly textured and with great freshness, it has a muscular black fruit palate and long earth-laced finish.

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jul 2019
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon delivers compelling earthy notions of truffles, mossy bark, iron ore and underbrush over a core of warm cassis, blackberry pie and grilled meats plus wafts of spice cake and dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and oh-so-seductive, the generous flash maintains a firm backbone of grainy-textured tannins and just enough background acid, finishing long and multilayered. 240 cases were made.

RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Marked by scents of bay leaf, sage, cherries and cassis, the full-bodied 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is dense but with a classic linear Cabernet structure. Quite sculpted and fresh for valley-floor fruit, it’s focused and long on the finish, gently dusty but firm. Once a walnut grove, the vineyard extends from the Silverado Trail down toward the Napa River, with this bottling using fruit from both the rocky, lower bench section of the vineyard near the road and a sandier parcel closer to the river. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
Fresh, with racy red currant, Damson and red cherry fruit flavors running through. Flecked with light savory notes and hints of sassafras, with an iron note lacing the piercing finish. Latent grip too, so cellar for maximum effect. Drink now through 2035. 2,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red EE Tench Vineyard is scented of pure plums and ripe blueberries with redcurrants and touches of lavender, roses, bay leaves and dusty earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, fine-grained, vibrant and refreshing, finishing long and perfumed. 1,403 cases produced.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
Lifted aromatics give the 2016 Red Wine EE Tench Vineyard a dimension of breadth and expansiveness that is alluring. The red cherry, plum, mocha and spice flavors are racy in this dense, explosive wine. The EE is shaping up to be another gem from Russell Bevan.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Offers a lavish feel, with waves of crushed plum, blackberry and açaí berry flavors rolling forth, infused liberally with dark licorice, sweet toast and fruitcake notes. A late tug of dark earth keeps this just honest enough. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2032. 1,403 cases made.

Napa Valley Red Wine
2012 / 750 ml.

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015
Black cherry jam, sweet spices, leather, mint and tobacco open up in the 2012 Sloan. Today the 2012 is succulent and super-expressive, with myriad of shades of dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice and new leather that develop. The flavors are deep and bold, with tons of vintage 2012 voluptuousness allied to significant palate presence. This is an especially exotic, unctuous Cabernet Sauvignon that pushes ripeness to the edge. All the elements are in the right place. Readers who enjoy modern, racy Napa Valley Cabernets will find much to admire in the 2012.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
Owned by the Chinese Pan family, but still featuring Michel Rolland as its winemaking consultant, the 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Sloan has turned out beautifully. The vintage gives it a precocious silkiness that is atypical. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it showcases this fabulous terroir on the steep hillsides of the Vaca mountains, behind the luxury resort of Auberge du Soleil. The 2012 offers up beautiful notes of blueberries, blackberries, cedarwood, graphite, espresso, licorice and chocolate along with copious quantities of glycerin and fruit. This is a big, surprisingly savory and fleshy effort from Sloan that comes closest stylistically to their magnificent 2002. It can be drunk now but will be even better in 7–8 years, and should keep for 25–30 years.
VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014
A dark, voluptuous beauty, the 2012 Sloan Estate is a terrific example of the vintage. The flavors are rich, enveloping and ample, yet the wine retains the signature freshness of this hillside site. Dark red cherry, plums, new leather and exotic spices open up as this racy, exceptionally polished wine shows off its considerable personality. I imagine the 2012 will enjoy a long and broad drinking window once it is released. The 2012 was still in barrel when I tasted it in October 2012. Hopefully it will go into bottle with the same exciting combination of fruit, aromatics and texture that are present today.

The 2011 Sloan Estate has turned out beautifully. Readers will find more of an Old World flavor profile and sense of structure in the 2011, yet all the elements are very nicely balanced. Savory herbs, crushed flowers, lavender, mint and mocha all add lift to the perfumed dark red cherry fruit in this gracious, super-expressive Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine. The great sites always come through, even in the most difficult of vintages. I remember visiting Sloan Estate during the 2011 harvest and seeing first hand the attention to detail here. It’s no surprise the 2011 has turned out quite nicely.

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Dec 2018
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Proprietary Red needs a little coaxing to reveal slowly unfurling notions of warm black cherries, mulberries, redcurrants and blackberry compote with touches of licorice, tapenade, chargrill and scorched earth. Full-bodied, firm, grainy and packed with layers of black fruits and savory flavors, it has a firm, grainy backbone of very ripe tannins and tons of vivacity, finishing very long.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
The 2014 Sloan is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Mocha, espresso, grilled herbs, leather, smoke and licorice are al fused together in this super-expressive, nuanced wine. In 2014, the Sloan is not as exuberant or rich as it can be, but that is really not an issue at all. The 2014 is a gorgeous wine in the making, that’s all there is to it.
