Where It's From
District / Sonoma County
View more wines from Sonoma County
Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

This easy-drinking blend of Bordeaux and Rhône varietals has a fruit-driven nose that reminiscent of a slightly savory fruit-punch lollipop. The palate is simple but lively, with a good amount of lemony acidity that feels fresh and vibrant.

This is aromatic with notes of cassis, dried spicy herbs, walnuts and spice box. Medium-bodied with juicy, fruit forward character and polished tannins. Sleek and round-textured. Hints of citrus peel and spices at the end. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
Earthy aromas of dried fennel and wood lacquer meet with dark plum on the nose of this bottling. There is a viscous texture to the palate, where firm tannins uphold flavors of dark berry and light oak. (Matt Kettmann)

Always a good value, the 2021 California Red Wine is no exception and has darker berry fruits, some leafy herb, sage, lavender, and chocolate nuances, full-bodied richness, and a lush, round, seamless style that’s already impossible to resist. This is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (with plenty of other red varieties), and it should shine for 7–8 years, if not a decade, although I would drink this puppy in its youth. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Blueberries, black berries, and flowers. Some stone. Spearmint and fresh bay leaves. Medium to full body with layers of juicy tannins that are rounded and textured. Creamy and caressing. 65% cabernet sauvignon with cabernet franc, petite sirah, petit verdot and merlot. Lovely to drink now. (James Suckling)
This has a brambly edge to the core of medium-weight blackberry and black cherry compote flavors, while singed cedar and vanilla underscore the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Syrah, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2026. 24,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley comes from a mix of top sites (98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc) and was brought up in 75% new oak. It’s a beautiful wine that has upfront, juicy cassis and darker berry fruits as well as textbook smoky tobacco, lead pencil, and graphite. It’s full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Aromas lead with oak notes of toasted wood, roasted coffee bean, vanilla pod and a kind of desert dustiness. What lies beneath is a dark-fruited profile of blackberry, black currant and black plum. A full mouth of course tannins coat the palate leading toward a solid finish. (Stacy Briscoe)

2021 / 750 ml.
Lots of black currant and lead pencil shaving aromas here. Full-bodied with very fine tannins with a freshness and brightness. Some graphite and magnet shavings, too. Juicy and flavorful. Coombsville magic here. 95% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot that’s from 30-year-old vines in the Coombsville appellation, in the southern part of Napa Valley. It has a classic, old school Napa vibe in its herbal black fruits, camphor, bouquet garni, and violet-tinged aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has terrific purity and freshness, ripe tannins, and the class to benefit from 4–6 years of bottle age and evolve for at least two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
