Where It's From

Region / Western Cape

View more wines from Western Cape

A vast majority of South African wine comes from its Western Cape region on the southwest tip of South Africa. Cooling waters flowing up from Antarctica moderate the climate of this region, making it perfect for growing grapes. You'll find lots of varietals to choose from here, including Cabernet Sauvignons, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, and on the white side Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs.

Country / South Africa

View more wines from South Africa

At the convergence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans sits a wine-producing nation with powerful Bordeaux and Rhone blends displaying its French influence, white wines as focused and expressive as any in New Zealand, value-driven Cabernet, Malbec, and Merlot to rival the best of South America, and yet a heartbeat and a character all its own.

Though its wine heritage was instituted by Dutch settlers in the colonial years, it’s hard to call South Africa a “new world” region when it boasts some of the oldest soils on the planet. With a diverse landscape from the mountains of Helderberg to the flinty Cape to the sandstone and clay slopes of Stellenbosch, South Africa has amazing potential.

Same Region, Same Vintage, Same Grape
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jul 2023
Made with a 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cinsault, 11% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 The Introduction Red bursts with juicy ripe red fruits and hints of herbs on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is lively and fresh with a plushy mouthfeel before offering a balanced structure, and it ends with a soft, lingering finish. The wine aged for 16 months in used barrels. Just over 16,000 bottles were produced. (Anthony Mueller)
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022
The 2020 The Introduction Red is based around two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cirsault component fermented whole bunch and other varieties de-stemmed. It has a punchy nose with black fruit, dark chocolate and light espresso scents with a touch of bell pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins, moderate depth, but plenty of freshness and salinity on the finish. Worth seeking out at this price point.

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
Made with 14% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon starts with a dark-fruited nose with aromas of black plum and turned earth. Medium-bodied, the wine is fresh and balanced, showing succulent tannins with juicy acidity before ending with a bright, food-friendly finish. Overall, it’s a sturdy, well-built wine that delivers a sincere expression of South African Cabernet Sauvignon. Give it a try. (Anthony Mueller)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2023
The bouquet includes aromas of red berries and thyme. Nice acidity lifts raspberry flavors and adds freshness to the smooth palate. It has just enough oak spice and herbs to keep the wine balanced and enjoyable until the last drop. (Jesica Vargas)

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 6, 2022
A complex nose of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil and gravel. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Texturally driven with subtle concentration and intensity. Fresh and fruity with mineral undertones. Herbal complexity adds depth. Best after 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
Ripe and sweet-fruited with hints of pyrazine, oak and crunchy red fruits, the 2020 Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is brilliant and spicy in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shows a smaller frame with fine tannins that will age gracefully over the next decade. The Cabernet concludes with a complex, dark-berried expression and hints of herbal essences over the lingering, spicy finish. Just under 13,600 bottles were filled after the wine rested for 20 months in 30% new French oak barrels. It’s a delightful wine that makes me think of Chinon without the cigar ash note.
