Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Gorgeously lush and seductive up front, showing açaí, blueberry and boysenberry compote flavors that are hefty but glide through, with anise, apple wood and fruitcake details that seemingly sparkle as it all cruises through the finish. Features a perfectly embedded graphite spine underneath it all, which should let this version evolve slowly in the cellar. Delivers a flashy display of fruit carried off with aplomb. Best from 2023 through 2038. 693 cases made. (James Molesworth)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022
Supple with underlying tension and complexity, this wine, blended with 16% Malbec, is brimming and bright in cassis, red cherry and plum. Dried herb, cedar and a hint of sage accent the edges of the concentrated core of enduring richness.

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
A pure, balanced and fresh Napa cabernet that is not just showing heady concentration and dark fruit. Here you get some violets, nimble flowers, redcurrants, graphite and fine spices. Some oranges, too. Fragrant and nuanced. Medium to full body with tight yet refined tannins. Rather linear, tense and elegant, but lacking neither power nor definition. Better to give it a few years to deliver more complexity. (James Suckling)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
Deep black-currant and blackberry flavors come with a warm, rounded texture bolstered by fine-grained tannins in this concentrated and mouth-filling wine. Hints of mint and dark chocolate enhance the aroma and continue through the finish. Best 2025–2035. (Jim Gordon)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
Lots of ripe blue fruits, sappy herbs, and some background minerality as well as a touch of oak emerge from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet from this estate that’s drinkable today yet will evolve for 15–20 years in cold cellars. It’s one for the old school Cabernet lovers out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain was aged for 22 months in oak barrels, 84% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with bombastic black currants, black cherries and boysenberries notes plus underlying hints of violets, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant. 3,997 cases were made.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 6, 2021
Aromas of pine needles, asphalt, graphite and black fruit follow through to a full-bodied and chewy palate with so much tannin, giving this real Howell Mountain character. It goes on and one. Muscular and in need of time in the bottle to soften. Better after 2024.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, tightly wound wine that captures all the natural intensity of Howell Mountain. Blackberry jam, graphite, smoke ,iron and crushed rocks give this dark, massively tannic Cabernet a lot of character. Even after having been opened for several hours, the 2018 remains forbidding, with serious tannins that are going to require a good bit of cellaring before the wine becomes approachable.

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is another perfect wine, although readers will need to have patience, as it’s still a baby. Deep purple-hued with a perfumed, vibrant bouquet of blue fruits, graphite, spring flowers, and lead pencil, it’s full-bodied, sensationally concentrated, has perfectly integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol, not a hard edge to be found, and an incredible finish. This monumental Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is 7–8 years away from maturity and will have 40–50 years of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
Incredible purity and precision, as well as opulence, define the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, and this is as good as any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world today. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling bouquet of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, and an incredible minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, seamless texture, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This is classic 2018 Napa Valley with its purity, freshness and precision as well as sensational concentration and perfectly integrated acidity, tannins, and alcohol. It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4–5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 7, 2022
So much black licorice in this, together with tar, blackcurrants, blackberries and slate. Full-bodied, but very toned and focused, with polish and energy. Extremely fine tannins and wonderful length. All about balance and purity. Gorgeous now, but this will age for decades to come. Great finish. Better after 2026.
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select displays a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with bold crème de cassis, blueberry pie and black cherry preserves notes, plus hints of smoked meats, fragrant earth and tar, with a fragrant waft of violets and Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with an enticing herbal lift. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is stunning. Bright acids give the 2018 tons of energy. This is an especially mid-weight, refined Hillside Select that is all class. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and blood orange build in the glass. Elegant and bright, the 2018 shows all the energy of the year in spades. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2022
Frankly ripe but well-focused, with blackberry and creamed boysenberry notes flowing through atop the polished structure, while cocoa and black licorice frame the finish. A subtle hint of sassafras lingers at the end, adding textural nuance. This has the stuffing to age well. Drink now through 2038. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
This memorable Cabernet Sauvignon has small amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec blended in. Aged 17 months in a majority of new French oak, it unfurls flavors of red fruit, dried herb and clove over a core of youthful tannin and spicy oak. Best from 2028–2038.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 27, 2021
Including small amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep purple color as well as classic Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, new leather, tobacco leaf, flowers, and lead pencil. Beautifully done on the palate and made in a seamless, elegant style, it has a kiss of Pauillac in its nicely integrated acidity, ripe, building tannins, a touch of earthiness, and a great finish. It’s not a blockbuster, just seamless and elegant, with a thrilling character. It should keep for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
Composed of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.8% Petit Verdot, 2.3% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Merlot and 0.1% Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was aged for 17 months in French oak, 65% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls effortlessly out of the glass with notes of stewed plums, warm cassis and black raspberries with touches of pencil shavings, dried Provence herbs and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a real skip in its step, featuring bright, crunchy black and red fruits and a soft texture, finishing lively.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Bottled from Far Niente is a gorgeous wine. Bold and juicy, with soft, plush tannins, the 2018 is a wonderfully seductive Cabernet that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent dark cherry, plum, espresso, chocolate and spice flesh out over time. This racy, easygoing Cabernet is full of charm.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
This has good energy, with a brambly spine driving plum and black currant fruit along while a solid bolt of iron runs underneath. Savory and bay accents hang in the background throughout. Best from 2021 through 2031. 19,535 cases made.
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
A sleek cabernet, this blends Far Niente’s Oakville fruit with grapes from Rutherford, St. Helena and Calistoga. The wine developed its velvety texture over the course of 17 months in French oak barrels (65 percent new), and there’s a quiet back-and-forth between the oak and the fruit that keeps it dynamic. Decant it for charcuterie.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2002
The rich, cedar-stained 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon needs a bit of time still to digest its oak. Menthol and toast dominate the nose, but give it a bit of time in the glass and the cassis and blackberry fruit begins to come through. It’s full-bodied and velvety in feel, not quite as broad and plush as the Proprietary Blend but perhaps a touch more focused and streamlined. (Joe Czerwinski)

SP95+95–98 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
Youthfully balled up, but there’s a ton of gorgeous cassis, raspberry and plum fruit, all of it kept in check right now thanks to a bolt of iron as riveting as I’ve seen in this wine. Barrel samples are often easily impressive, but this is way more than that.—Non-blind Louis M. Martini vertical (July 2020). (James Molesworth)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Well-built, with a dense core of red and black currant reduction flavors held in check for now, while iron-tinged sweet tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes hold sway. Packs a muscular, racy structure that drives underneath, so just give this a bit more time to fully meld. Rock-solid, though. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,350 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022
Aromas of currants, blackberries, vanilla, walnuts and cedar. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Plush, supple and textured with a deep core of dark fruit and spice. Vanilla, too. Rich and flavorful. Big, chewy wine. Try from 2023. (James Suckling)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Martini’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard has the site’s characteristic mint and herbal overtones, but it also offers deep cassis and plum notes. Full-bodied, ripe but firm, with typical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal austerity and reserve, framed by fine-grained, silky tannins that linger on the finish, it’s a classic example of Monte Rosso Cabernet. JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Another perfect wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon IX Estate is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, all from the estate on Pritchard Hill. A monster of a wine that needs serious bottle age, it reveals a dense purple hue as well as a mineral-drenched bouquet of pure crème de cassis, charcoal, spring flowers, tobacco, and earth. Just incredible on the palate, it’s full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with remarkable purity and a finish that won’t quit. Cabernet – or red wine for that matter – doesn’t get any better! It needs a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. but this legendary wine will see its 50th birthday in fine form. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2018 IX Estate is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal earth and mineral scents of iron ore, tilled soil, forest floor and truffles with ripe red and black currants, kirsch, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus nuances of tar, lilacs and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and exhilarating freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit. Mineral and savory accents linger long into the epic finish. A thought-provoking, pensive, mesmerizing wine.
VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 IX Estate is dense, powerful and brooding. Inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, spice infuse the IX Estate with tremendous character. All of the savory intensity that is typical of this site comes through, and yet the richness of the fruit is palpable. Readers will find an exciting, viscerally thrilling wine that hits all the right notes. In 2018, the IX Estate is truly lights out. It is also the darkest and most concentrated of the three Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 2, 2021
Extraordinary aromas of black truffles, blackberries, bark and violets. Essence of blackberries. Then it goes to crushed stones and pine needles. Aromatic perfection. Full-bodied with well framed tannins and beautiful dark fruit. Superb finish and intensity. Mountain character. Tannic at the end. Cooler and fresher undertone. 77% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 8% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Try after 2027.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
A broad, lush style, with a big wave of warmed cassis and plum reduction flavors rolling through, yet this settles relatively gently rather than crashing through the finish, thanks to well-embedded, loamy grip and an alluring backdrop of roasted alder, bay leaf and licorice root notes. A wine that walks softly but carries a big stick. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2040. 1,650 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This structured and concentrated wine is spot on for the vintage. It’s very dense in color and aroma, saturated with ultra dark chocolate, graphite and blueberries on a firm texture of taut tannins that will need time to evolve. Aged in 85 to 90 percent new American oak barrels, the wine should be approachable by 2028 and best from 2033. (James Suckling)
