When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This TD-9 Cabernet Sauvignon, not to be confused with other TD-9 red wines, shows an amazing clarity of dark fruit. Its deep black cherries, blackberries and touches of black olive embody classic Cabernet. Beautifully integrated tannins lend a posh texture that’s still bracing enough to help the wine age and improve. Best from 2026–2036. (Jim Gordon)

The first vintage where they’ve put Cabernet Sauvignon on the label, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, raised all in new barrels. Medium ruby/purple-hued, it has a killer nose of caramelized red and black fruits as well as lead pencil, dried flowers, and toasty oak. It’s balanced, medium to full-bodied, and just about impossible to resist. There are roughly 10,000 cases produced, and it’s a wine readers will love over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dried cherries, blackcurrants, chocolate, sweet licorice, anisette and hints of moist earth on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, refined and velvety with a softer, powdery tannin structure. Attractive core of ripe black fruit with a lingering finish. Cabernet sauvignon. Better after 2025. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 5, 2024
Bright and juicy, with a fun burst of blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with hints of sweet bay leaf, violet, singed apple wood and licorice root. Good brambly energy runs underneath, giving this a vibrant feel as well as ample structure for the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2038. 9,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
Shafer’s TD-9 is now a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, with the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 being composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. Offering up scents of cherries, wood spice and vanilla, it may lack a bit of complexity and concentration, but this full-bodied effort still hits all the right notes, finishing long and velvety. A polished, creamy style, with enticing notes of plum sauce, blackberry preserves, melted licorice and dark cocoa that meld steadily through the loam-accented finish. Best from 2026 through 2036. 9,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Firm, dark-fruited and focused with aromas of dark cherries. dark plums, dried herbs, cedar and cloves. Well-balanced with a medium to full body and plush tannins. Generous and robust, with a creamy core of berries, herbs and spices on the palate and a flavorful finish with good persistence. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)

The inky purple/blue-tinged 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch Vineyard is more focused and tight, with pure aromatics of blue fruits, chocolate, graphite, and iron. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the structured, concentrated, age-worthy style of the vintage and is a seriously good wine in the making. It’s going to demand bottle age, however. This wine offers supple aromas of blackberry jam, blueberry and pepperjam, opening further to boysenberry, toffee, star anise, Chinese five spice and toasty oak. Layers of sweet cigar, dried black cherry and bittersweet chocolate bring it all together for a mouthwatering finish. (Tonya Pitts)

A cab with lots of currant and blackberry aromas with some fresh herbs such as sage and lead pencil character. Lots of crushed stone and cement as well. Medium to full body. Firm and polished, Extremely long and vivid. A blend of Hudson, Morisoli, and George III. Shows the magic of 2021. Needs two or three years to soften and come together. (James Suckling)
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
Always a beautiful wine, as well as one of the best values out there, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve offers lots of chocolaty red and blue fruits as well as medium to full body, an elegant, perfectly balanced mouthfeel, classic Cabernet spice, leather, and dried herbs, and a great finish. It shows the quality of the vintage and will be a no-brainer purchase. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
Amici’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve boasts intense aromas of camphor, mocha, loamy earth and dark-skinned fruit. Plums, black cherries and cassis carry over onto a medium to full-bodied palate framed by supple tannins, ending in a long, mouthwatering finish. A step up from the regular bottling, it also offers solid value for a Napa Cab, coming in at roughly $100 retail. (Joe Czerwinski)
RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
Amici’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve will spend 22 months in oak before bottling. It features deep cedar and camphor notes, plus cassis and blueberry fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, richly weighted and silky in texture, it delivers a long, mouthwatering finish. Nicely done. (Joe Czerwinski)
VN91+91–94 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve marries energy and depth. In most vintages, the Reserve is an under the radar gem. The 2021 is another terrific example. Bright acids and beams of tannin run through a core of dark fruit. Mocha, tobacco, cedar, licorice and chocolate linger. The 2021 is a bit firm, but time in bottle should take care of that. Once again, the Reserve looks like it will be one of the stars in this range. (Antonio Galloni)
