When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

A strong vein of menthol dominates this full-bodied and moderately tannic wine, competing with black-cherry and blackberry flavors for attention. (Jim Gordon)

State Lane Vineyard
2019 / 750 ml.
Item #: 98721
Including 5% Merlot and checking in at 14.2% natural alcohol, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee sports a semi-opaque ruby hue to go with a classic, almost old-school Cabernet nose of red and black currants, chocolate, sandalwood, freshly sharpened pencils, and dried herbs. A more elegant, complex, nuanced Cabernet, it’s medium to full-bodied and has ripe yet building tannins, good acidity, and a great finish. All about purity, precision, and elegance, while not sacrificing intensity or richness, this gorgeous, Château Margaux-like Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be hidden for 4–5 years, if not a decade, and will drink brilliantly over the following 20–30 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2019 Estate Cuvée offers tremendous density, power and textural intensity, almost shockingly so for these wines, especially compared to the 2018, which is its diametric opposite stylistically. The wine’s density and sheer tannic heft are imposing. There is just a bit of reduction that needs time to dissipate. Ripe red-fleshed fruit, sage, lavender, plum and mint flesh out in a Cabernet Sauvignon that marries power, density and energy. This is impressive, to say the least. (Antonio Galloni)
A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée has a deep purple-black color. It jumps out of the glass with exuberant scents of blueberry pie, plum preserves and blackberry compote plus hints of dark chocolate, violets and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, supported by soft, velvety tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Aged in 75% new French oak, the alcohol is a relatively modest 14.2%. 375 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve takes on a more luxurious sheen and is forward with toasted bourbon spice, cedar, menthol, and cassis. Full-bodied, with ripeness throughout, notes of juicy blackberry, turned earth, and mocha fill the palate. It’s a bolder, more toasty style to drink over the next 4–6 years. (Audrey Frick)
Ultraripe but still nice and dry, this gentle giant feels soft and velvety while cradling late-picked plums, blackberries and oak spices in soft tannins. Best now–2028. (Jim Gordon)
Overtly toasted, though this has a good core of plum and blackberry puree behind that, with violet and anise notes trying to peak through on the graphite-edged finish. For fans of the style. Drink now through 2025. 1,940 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Outpost’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal, sourced from around the winery, plus some barrels from the True Vineyard that didn’t make the cut for inclusion there. Just don’t call it a second wine, as it’s a beautiful effort in its own right, with wonderfully pure cassis fruit, accented with notions of vanilla and hints of dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, dusty, tannic (but ripe) finish, try it in four or five years and drink it over the following two decades. (Joe Czerwinski)
Wonderful spices with pine needles and dark fruit. Full-bodied and silky with fine-grained tannins and beautiful length. Attractive vanilla undertones, but not overstated. Compact and creamy. Tight at the end. Needs two or three years to open. Try after 2025, but already attractive.
Sporting a deep purple-black color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little coaxing to begin, soon unfurling to reveal notions of crushed black cherries, wild blueberries and fresh blackcurrant, plus suggestions of tar, wet slate, fertile loam and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with wonderful energy, delivering loads of black fruit layers and a firm, grainy frame plus and lively backbone, finishing long and mineral laced. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
As for the three Cabernet releases, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a medium to full-bodied, balanced, layered, and elegant style that just begs to be drunk. Giving up lots of blue fruits, bouquet garni, tobacco, and cedar, it will keep for 15–20 years if stored properly. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Packs in a lot of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors supported by a racy graphite underpinning, with showy anise, fruitcake and Christmas pudding notes filling in for dramatic effect. Best from 2023 through 2034. 1,719 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Varietally correct and classic in style, this is a dry, elegant and demure red, brimming in well-integrated notes of currant, clove and dusty dark chocolate. Blueberry compote adds a touch of richness to an otherwise balanced affair. (Virginie Boone)

Plums, currants, stones, sage and walnut husks on the nose. Some toffee and mocha. Medium- to full-bodied with polished tannins. Creamy finish. Drink after 2023. (James Suckling)
Sourced predominantly from two estate vineyards in Rutherford, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Grenache and 1% Syrah. Matured in approximately 50% new French oak, the wine offers a mix of cherries, subtle cedar notes and vanilla shadings on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, velvety, plush and supple. It’s easy to drink but has enough tannin to support short-term cellaring, and the finish adds appealing, savory hints of Mexican chocolate. With close to 26,000 cases produced, it should be widely available, and diligent shoppers may find it at retail for less than $50, making a rare bargain in Napa Cabernet. (Joe Czerwinski)

Proprietary Estate Red Wine
2019 / 750 ml.
Item #: 933
Black fruit, cassis, dried herbs, cedar and dried spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured with a solid core of dark fruit on the center-palate and an intense finish. Drink from 2024. (James Suckling)
Delivers a big gush of plum sauce, blackberry preserves and melted black licorice, with a flicker of bramble tucked in to provide some energy. Lush and toasty through the finish, with the fruit holding the upper hand throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2032. 450 cases made. (James Molesworth)
Cedary, almost bourbon-like wood, blueberries, cherries and vanilla cream all appear on the nose of the 2019 G by Alex Guarachi, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malbec. Full-bodied, creamy and plush, it’s almost ridiculous how soft and pillowy the tannins are. Drink it over the next five to eight years. (Joe Czerwinski)
This wine is a great value for the quality, a blend of 88% estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% estate Malbec from the producer’s high-elevation site. Aged two years in all French oak, it is smooth, supple and rich in mountain berry, with additions of toasted oak and tobacco. This wine is approachable in its youth. (Virginie Boone)
Including 10% Malbec, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon G By Alex Guarachi sports a dense ruby/plum color to go with a spicy, savory nose of ripe black cherries, plums, chocolate, and tobacco. With moderate acidity, full-bodied richness, and loads of texture, this hedonistic bomb of a wine should evolve for 8–10 years if properly stored. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This deep and concentrated wine is as smooth as silk, scented with black currants, spearmint and a touch of toast, then soothes the palate with velvety tannins and lush, ripe fruit flavors. While easy to sip, it has a subtle, restrained tannin structure. Best–2028. (Jim Gordon)
Aromas of blackberries and currants with spicy herbs, pine wood and crushed rocks. Medium- to full-bodied, sleek and polished with soft tannins and silky texture. Juicy, blue-fruited finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
A solid, direct offering, with cherry and plum preserves lined with light red licorice, earth and tobacco hints, which help extend the finish. Drink now through 2031. 32,985 cases made. (James Molesworth)
