This is a blend of 78% Napa Valley- and Sonoma-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Shiraz from Paso Robles. It is a smooth and earthy wine that offers flavors of leather, earth, iron and crushed rock cut against herbal accents.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, March 5, 2021
A very fine and polished red with cherry, berry, chocolate and cedar aromas and flavors. Some spice and meat with hints of tea leaf. Some ash, too. Medium body and extremely refined texture, showing real balance and elegance. The tannins spread across the palate in a beautiful way. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% shiraz. Drink or hold.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Shiraz Bin 600 is the entry-level wine in this new range from Penfolds. Bold and racy to the core, the 2018 possesses terrific richness and tons of allure. Blackberry jam, dried flowers, espresso, licorice and leather build in a sumptuous, opulent wine that will be very easy to drink upon release. The blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Shiraz from sites in Napa Valley, Sonoma and Paso Robles works so well here. It spent 16 months in American oak, 40% new.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Feb 2021
This 2018 Bin 600 is the first release of this new Penfolds California label. It is a blend of two different regions and two different varieties: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and 22% Shiraz from their vineyards in the Camatta Hills area of California Central Coast (about 15 miles east of Paso Robles). The interesting twist to the story behind this wine is that Block 10 in the Camatta Hills vineyard was planted in the late 1990s with Shiraz cuttings from two of Penfolds’s most iconic South Australia vineyards: Magill Estate and Kalimna vineyard. This is the Shiraz component. “So,” Peter Gago told me, “this has been a project in the making for a long time. We see this project as a continuation — making wine through a Penfolds lens, but made in California.”
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Modest in scale, but delivers a pure beam of raspberry and cherry purée, with light floral and anise hints in the background. Finish is unencumbered by toast and lingers prettily. Tasted three times, with consistent notes. Drink now through 2022. 12,818 cases made.

Deep ruby-purple, the 2018 Claret is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot. It features blackcurrant aromas with accents of peppercorn, bacon, cedar, thyme and lavender. Full-bodied, its powerful, concentrated fruits are supported by finely grained tannins, and it has a long, still youthfully coiled finish. It will continue to unfold for several more years in bottle. 2,432 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)

The 2018 Claret is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Syrah, and the rest Petit Verdot. It is fresh with aromas of graphitic earth and red plum, and the palate reveals fine tannins and the juicy, youthful appeal of red apple and crushed roses. This is ready and inviting to drink now or over the next 3–6 years. (Audrey Frick)

Woody mushroom aromas meet with red fruit and smoke on the nose of this bottling. Those roasted and smoked red fruit flavors pick up umami-laden soy elements on the palate, where a light pepper spice carries through to the finish.

Crisp blackberry, baked earth and layers of herb aromas show on the nose of this bottling. Framed by stiff tannins, the palate is dry, with blackberry and black-plum flavors, enhanced by a punch of black pepper and dusting of dried herbs.

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, March 5, 2021
Lots of blackberry, currant, light chocolate and hazelnut. This is rather dense and plush, but shows impressive layers of tannins that have a rough-velvet texture. Juicy and intense fruit. The grapes come from the AVAs of Rutherford, Calistoga, Oakville and then spread across Napa. 14.9% comes from South Australia. A global wine. In the end, it’s nicely toned and curated. Needs three or four years to come together. Try after 2025.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 149 is a blend of fruit from Rutherford, Calistoga and Oakville plus 15% South Australia Cabernet. Inky, deep and unctuous, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Although quite opulent and rich in feel, the 2018 also has tons of backing structure to balance things out. All the elements come together effortlessly. It was aged in 100% new oak, 80% French and 20% American.
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021
This wine is a blend of grapes from Napa Valley (85.1%) and South Australia (14.9%). A tannic structure gives way to a welcome juiciness of tangy cranberry and currant flavors. French and American oak aging impart a moderate level of toast and vanilla tones, with accents of cedar, dried herbs and black pepper chiming in. The bright acidity lasts through a long, supple finish.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Feb 2021
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 149 slips gracefully out of the glass with notions of wild blueberries, blackcurrant cordial and mulberries with an undercurrent of Indian spices, sandalwood, cigar box and dusty soil plus a touch of garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and decadently played in the mouth, it has firm, rounded tannins and bold freshness supporting the voluptuous layers, finishing long and spicy. The adaption of some of the Grange “formula” (for want of a better term) of winemaking seems to lend more of an Australian style to this wine, although there is no mistaking the Napa Cabernet fruit profile in all but the texture of the tannins, which are more typical of Australia. It’s a true chimera! 1,393 cases were made.

Looking in on the 389 can be “can be,” she says, parenthetically) a good insight into what we can expect from the upcoming Grange. Now, they are very different wines, no question, however, stylistically they have much in common and the illumination into the season that birthed the wines in each instance. Here, the 2020 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has consummate polish and sleek tannins, imbued as they are with graphite, black tea, licorice and resin. The fruit is pure and black and chewy… gorgeous wine. And it lives for decades. This has always been a collector’s dream and continues so through this vintage. Highly recommended. (Erin Larkin)
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 26, 2022
Very rich, ripe and intense, this has plenty of depth and is one of the strongest statements of Penfolds’ house style. Rich vanillin and sweetly spicy American oak on the nose, with chocolate, blueberry, violet, blackberry and iodine notes. The palate delivers quite approachable and supple texture, smoothly fleshy and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry abound. Deep and ripe finish with nutty tannins to close. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2022
Dense and succulent, with velvety tannins and a core of spiced plum and blackberry. The details and aromatics take this wine to the next level—reminiscent of dark chocolate and Black Forest cake, Kalamata olive, nutmeg and palo santo. Gains momentum on the long, expressive finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2037. 14,605 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022
Saturated garnet. Pungent, spice- and smoke-accented scents of black and blue fruits, licorice, violet, coconut and smoky minerals. Juicy and impressively concentrated, offering intense blackberry, cherry-vanilla and bitter chocolate flavors that become sweeter and more lively with air. Finishes smooth and impressively long, with repeating blue fruit and spice character and harmonious tannins that add shape and gentle grip. All American oak, one-third of it new. (Josh Raynolds)

Penfolds Grange 2014 / 750 ml.

2014 / 750 ml.

Item #: 97801

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Oct 2018
Rich, concentrated and intense, the 2014 Grange delivers exactly what we’ve come to expect from this Penfolds icon wine. It’s full-bodied, velvety in feel and loaded with plummy fruit, framed in vanilla and cedar. Dense, powerful and tannic, it should prove to be long lived, even by Grange standards. Gago doesn’t rate the vintage overall that highly, but he says the selection this year for Grange was a bit more stringent and that production levels were just average. There are still over 1,000 cases for the United States.
SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019
At first glance, this is a purely indulgent wine, with gobs of creamy, milk chocolate-laden maraschino cherry, raspberry framboise and Earl Grey tea aromas. Then wave after wave of elements start filling in, with toasted cumin, peppermint oil, Kalamata olive and white pepper notes, combining into an almost overwhelming amount of details. Becomes indulgent again on the long, lush finish. Drink now through 2035. 1,088 cases imported.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/13/2018
It’s always a pleasure to taste what unquestionably the reference point wine for Australia, and the 2014 Grange doesn’t disappoint. From a more difficult vintage for South Australia, it’s a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in all new American oak hogsheads, hitting a normal alcohol level of 14.5 with a healthy pH and acidity. Inky purple/blue colored, it offers a rocking bouquet of ripe plums, blueberries, vanilla bean, espresso, and graphite, with hints of mint and flowers developing with time in the glass. Deep, rich, fabulously concentrated, and pure on the palate, it stays tight and compact, with notable precision and length. It’s a seriously structured yet impeccably balanced effort that needs a solid 5–6 years to shed some tannin and gain volume, and will keep for 2+ decades after that. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2019
The latest vintage of this iconic wine is more approachable and elegant than in previous years. This 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon blend offers an ocean of aromas: plum, mocha, coffee, tomato leaf, black olive, ground pepper, cedar, wet tarmac and sage. These tones swell toward a beautifully balanced palate that is powerful yet poised and silky in texture. The American oak is there but feels quieter than it has in the past, letting other nuances wash ashore, all held afloat by fine-grained herb and salt-flecked tannins. While other vintages seem untouchable in their youth, the 2014, with time in decanter, could offer immediate gratification yet still cellar well through 2044.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
Brilliant purple. A heady, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, incense, candied flowers, vanilla and cola, with a smoky, incisive mineral nuamce building with air. Juicy, penetrating and alluringly sweet, offering deeply concentrated blueberry, cherry-cola, mocha and violet pastille flavors and a strong suggestion of fruitcake. Shockingly vibrant for its depth, with youthfully firm tannins adding shape and grip to an extremely long, mineral- and floral-dominated finish.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, June 27, 2019
Shows a cooler and more savory style from the get go. Darker, spicy aromas with notes of clove and soy, blackberries, bracken and wood, dried orange and dark chocolate. The depth of flavor is undeniable. There’s elegance here too, in the sense that it is chiseled and contained, only broadening out at the finish. This has some growth to come in the bottle. Peter Gago’s description of the tannins as ’slaty’ is spot on; they are dark, stony and slick, smooth and strong. The flavors hang long into a tight, toasty and spicy finish. Luxuriant, long and powerful. A blend of 98 per cent shiraz and two per cent cabernet sauvignon, sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully, Coonawarra, Clare Valley and Magill Estate. 20 months in 100 per cent new American-oak hogsheads. Try from 2025 and best after 2030.

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Jul 2022
The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds’s reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better. (Erin Larkin)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2022
Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes. Drink now through 2035. 9,287 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 26, 2022
A homage to warmer-region, South Australian shiraz, this has a rich and smooth delivery of ripe blackberries and red-to-dark plums on the nose. The wine has taken its 12 months in American oak (16% new) well and truly in its stride. Plush and suave mouth-feel here, this is effortless and a style that sits right in the Penfolds sweet spot. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Opaque ruby. Oak-spiced cherry, blackberry and mocha aromas, along with coconut, licorice and cracked pepper accents. Deep and weighty on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, mocha and oak spice flavors that show an appealing sweetness but are slow to open. In a distinctly powerful style, delivering youthfully chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish that echoes the licorice and dark berry notes. (Josh Raynolds)

Stunning blueberries and mulberries here with a wealth of baking spices and red berries, as well as tarry notes and blackberries. It is all here. The palate has a super plush, rich and quite compressed tannin feel. Some firm and powerful moments, as the palate builds with plentiful spiced summer berries. Red plums and blackberries to close. RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
Red raspberries abound on the nose of the 2017 RWT Shiraz, which — as usual — is all Barossa fruit aged in French oak (70% new). It’s full-bodied and velvety, with appealing notes of dried spices, beef and plenty of red fruit. There’s a cedary veneer to this vintage, which looks as if it will need a couple of years to come together, then drink well for up to two decades.
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - February 1, 2020
Peter Gago, Penfolds’ Chief Winemaker, worked closely with John Duval in the 1990s on the development of RWT, their red wine trial using Grange-level fruit aged in French oak rather than American. The aging regime brings a luscious texture and caramel scent to this wine, contrasted by the black olive and dark blueberry savor of the fruit. The tannins last in black and green peppercorn spice, already bold and delicious with air, suited to long evolution in the cellar.

Dark magenta. Ripe cherry, cassis, cracked pepper and incense aromas are complemented by suggestions of menthol, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 shows firm tension and power in the mouth, offering sappy red and dark berry, vanilla, rose pastille and spicecake qualities and a sweetening cola nuance that emerges with aeration. Juicy and energetic on the long, gently chewy finish, which features well-knit tannins and lingering spice and bitter cherry notes.
