The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is a stunning wine. Dark, virile and imposing, the 2019 packs so much energy and complexity into its mid-weight frame. Generous dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add layers of dimension. The 2019 is hugely promising. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle next year.

I loved all these latest releases from Patria. Starting with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch, which might be the best Napa Cabernet under $100, it has terrific red and black fruits as well as notes of crushed stone, herbes de Provence, spice, and violets. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and already impossible to resist, it’s ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2019 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is jumping with exuberant scent of crushed blackberries, warm cassis and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of roses, wild sage and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate has fantastic tension and finely grained tannins supporting the multi-layered black and red fruit flavors, finishing beautifully perfumed. 600 cases were made. District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

There are not many better Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon blends out there than the 2021 Avoyelles Oakville, which checks in as 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot, most of which was co-fermented. Absolutely brilliant any way you look at it, it offers a stunning array of cassis, blueberries, graphite, chocolate, and spring flowers on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied, ultra-fine, balanced, polished 2021 that’s going to flirt with perfection on release. There’s not much of this to go around, so don’t miss a chance to buy a bottle if you’re given the opportunity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The inky purple/blue-tinged 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch Vineyard is more focused and tight, with pure aromatics of blue fruits, chocolate, graphite, and iron. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the structured, concentrated, age-worthy style of the vintage and is a seriously good wine in the making. It’s going to demand bottle age, however. RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
The 2016 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged 19 months in 90% new French oak, from a vineyard that sits between Dalla Valle and Ovid. It’s very deep purple-black colored with a nose that rocks up with wonderfully open, expressive crème de cassis, blueberries and warm plums with hints of cigar box, tilled soil and menthol plus a touch of pencil shavings. Full-bodied and concentrated in the mouth, the palate features black fruits and earthy layers framed by big, ripe, rounded tannins and great freshness, finishing long. 475 cases produced.
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 29, 2017
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is terrific and has a huge, full-bodied, yet impeccably balanced profile to with lots of blueberry, plum, forest floor, and floral aromatics. With no hard edges, ripe, sweet tannin, and a big finish, it’s packed with potential. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
A barrel sample blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of pure cassis, black plums and black cherries with wafts of earth, chocolate box, dried herbs and rare beef. Firm and taut with ripe, grainy tannins and a lively acid line providing a solid foundation for the vibrant, expressive black fruit and savory layers, it finishes on a compelling mineral note.
VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is a step up from the 2015. Specifically, the 2016 is polished, sensual and inviting, with expressive aromatics and extraordinary purity of fruit. A rush of blueberry jam, menthol, licorice, lavender and cloves lead into the finish. Time in the glass brings out a more delicate, understated side, qualities that are not always found in Oakville Ranch wines. The 2016 is the first vintage that incorporates See Clone Cabernet.

VN95+95–97 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Avoyelles is Tony Biagi’s Cabernet Franc-based wine. Today, it is rather reticent, but that is not especially surprising for a wine with so much Franc (55%) and from this site. Time in the glass brings out the wines’ striking aromatic presence, along with layers of nuance that are a total turn on. The purity of the flavors is simply remarkable. The tannins need time to soften. That should not be an issue in time.
RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Mar 2021
The 2019 2019 Oakville Ranch Avoyelles is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers compelling, impactful scents of baked plums, Morello cherries and warm cassis, with touches of rose oil, pencil lead and redcurrant jelly, plus a hint of sage. The firmly textured, grainy, full-bodied palate delivers great tension, packed with red and black berry layers, finishing long and minerally. 160 cases are due to be made.

Blackberries, dark wet soil and blackcurrants. Graphite, too. So aromatic. Pure fruit. Full-bodied with superbly polished, fine tannins that draw you down through the center of palate. Extremely layered and the texture is so curated, giving wonderful persistence. Real plushness and fine, velvety texture. 50% cabernet sauvignon, 37% cabernet franc, 7% petit verdot and 6% merlot. Better after 2026.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
Continuum’s 2019 Proprietary Red is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, all from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill. Aged in two-thirds new French oak, with the balance in second or third-use barrels and a single concrete amphora, it’s remarkably dark in hue, a deep, saturated purple in the glass. On the nose, it’s floral and herbal yet fruit-driven, with violets, sage and bay leaf adding nuance to black cherries, while the palate is full-bodied, plush and silky. There’s an enticing yin-yang to the interplay between high-toned herbals and bass notes of dark chocolate in this dense, concentrated effort that finishes lush and long. It’s a magnificent wine that should drink well for at least two decades.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Expressive and vivid, with cassis, blueberry reduction and plum preserves mixed amicably together, while licorice, warm fruitcake, sassafras and baker's chocolate line the finish. A long, subtle cast iron note echoes as the fruit lingers, making for an alluring contrast. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2038. 5,000 cases made. Riper and more voluptuous, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard is a selection from the estate vineyard and a smaller production release. It has a wealth of ripe black fruits, smoke tobacco, chocolate, and violets, with more lead pencil and earthy nuances emerging with time in the glass. Concentrated, full-bodied, yet balanced and incredibly pure, it’s another terrific, seamless wine from this estate readers will love. I like it today, but give bottles a year or three and enjoy over the following 20+. (Jeb Dunnuck)

While the Grand Vin gets all the attention, don’t miss the 2019 M. Étain. This cuvee offers so much pleasure, and it also has a unique style all its own. Based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 4% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, its deep purple color is followed by a great bouquet of cassis, violets, leafy herbs, black olive, and crushed stone. Full-bodied, it has a terrific mix of richness and freshness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. While it’s a second wine at this address, it’s as good as just about everyone else’s top cuvée. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 M. Étain is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with notes of violets, fallen leaves and incense over a warm cassis and plum preserves core, plus a waft of cardamom. Full-bodied, the ripe, opulent black fruit preserve flavors are beautifully framed by firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and seductively spicy. 2,600 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon M. Étain is absolutely gorgeous. Intense in its aromatics, the 2019 is laced with spice, blood orange and floral accents. Broad and resonant, the 2019 is definitely voluptuous, but also less heavy than some previous editions. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. While M. Étain is a sibling to Scarecrow, it is very clearly more pedigreed than many estates’ top wines and increasingly of note on its own.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Offers a nice dark, winey core of currant, plum and black cherry fruit melded steadily with licorice snap, roasted alder and a twinge of loam through the finish. A bit grippy on the back end, but this has the requisite fruit for balance. Best from 2023 through 2036. 2,600 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint has a deep garnet-purple color and sings of wild blueberries, Morello cherries and red and black currant jellies with touches of dried mint, chocolate box and cedar chest.
