O'Shaughnessy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 / 750 ml.

The base 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is terrific, and while I don’t know the price, I suspect it’s a great value. Deep purple-hued, with terrific mulled currant and blackberry fruits, it has lots of ripe herbal, chocolaty spice notes, full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and a great finish. This is pure Napa Valley goodness to drink over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Notes of black cherries and cassis combine with cedar and vanilla on the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that’s almost equal parts Howell Mountain, Mt. Veeder and Oakville. It’s medium to full-bodied, reasonably concentrated and already accessible, with plush tannins and a lingering finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a soft, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Succulent red cherry, plum, mocha, new leather and spice are nicely pushed forward, with floral notes that build in the glass. The Napa Valley Cabernet is a blend of fruit of estate vineyards in Oakville, Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder. (Antonio Galloni)

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Martini clone from the core of the estate. A heady, ample wine, the 2019 is endowed with striking opulence. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha shows tremendous depth. Attractive floral notes emerge with a bit of aeration, adding brightness. The contours are remarkably soft for a young mountain Cabernet. These wines age beautifully, their youthful opulence notwithstanding, so I would not be in a rush here. (Antonio Galloni)

Alluring, with steeped plum and cassis notes cruising through, backed by lively licorice snap, bramble and sweet tobacco accents. A long echo of singed alder permeates on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2034. 2,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Bursting in dark, inky black fruit and jammy blueberry, this wine is concentrated yet bright, with a freshness that contrasts and lifts its more powerful tendencies. Succulent and supple on the palate, it finishes in black pepper, leather and cigar. (Virginie Boone)

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, dried thyme and baking spices. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins and lively acidity. Creamy, with a flavorful, fresh finish. Drink or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is composed of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers pronounced blackcurrant jelly, stewed plums and cedar scents with wafts of cloves and black olives. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with lively, crunchy black fruits, framed with approachable, grainy tannins and finishing savory. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
The value-priced (by Napa standards) 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Jax Estate sports a deep purple hue to go with a pretty, perfumed bouquet of pure cassis, ripe cherries, minty herbs, and chocolate. I like its freshness, it’s medium to full-bodied, has notable purity, and is just a charming, delicious Cabernet to enjoy over the coming 5–7 years or so. 1900 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)

WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22
This grows at Beringer’s 600-acre Knight’s Valley ranch, in the hills west of Calistoga, where the harvest in 2019 extended from mid- to late October. The wine sustains the cool elegance this vineyard can give to cabernet, a supple, high-elevation wine with gentle ripeness, lasting on notes of tarragon and fresh garden herbs.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
There were more than 160,000 cases of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley produced, so it’s good to see that it is performing well. There’s an attractive floral top note that adds a touch of complexity to the cassis fruit, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and even elegant. It’s a better wine — and far better value — than many entry-level wines sourced from Napa Valley.
VN8787 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley is a powerful, wild and brooding wine It shows good depth, but I find the mid-palate lacking in depth and less freshness than I expect to see in a young Knights Valley wine. Hints of cherry, earthiness and gravel linger, but the 2019 never comes together fully. (Antonio Galloni)
