JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 3, 2022
Blackberries, ripe cherries, chili chocolate, cedar, walnuts and charcoal on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with supple tannins and fresh acidity. Polished, silky and creamy finish. Pretty cabernet. Drink now or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
I find the 2019 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon to be quite subtle and elegant, with clear Maipo profile, a little minty and spicy. Like the majority of varietal wines, it also contains small amounts of other grapes, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot in this case. It’s medium to full-bodied and reveals very good balance and freshness. 900,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 5, 2024
A distinctive and crunchy style, with lively acidity paving the way for mineral-laced cherry and red currant flavors that are buoyed by elements of dried thyme, balsam and white pepper. Ends with an echo of smoke and a firm tannic structure. Best after 2023. 75,000 cases made, 10,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

From the Producer

Deep red with lush cherry, black currant, and blackberry aromas with a touch of tar and smoke. The highly concentrated flavors are framed by firm tannins. The texture is smooth—almost silky—and masks the firm tannic structure that lies below and only appears on the lingering finish.

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Marques de Casa Concha from the San Julián vineyard in Limarí, 15 miles from the sea, planted in alluvial red clay soil, spent 11 months in French oak barrels. A medium-hued red, it offers crystal-clear aromas of sour cherry and earth and a bare-bones palate with a fine, silky texture and a slightly saline flavor.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The 2019 Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir was produced with fruit from vines planted in Limarí between 2006 and 2009. It’s ripe but has kept very good acidity and comes through as balanced and fresh while it’s also powerful. The oak feels more and more integrated, as the wine matured in French oak barrels, 15% of them new, for 11 months. 54,000 bottles were filled in April 2020.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Piquant red-fruit aromas of cranberry, currant and raspberry include a note of iodine and a hint of dried meat. This is a lively style of Pinot that’s medium in weight. Spicy oak notes accent plum and raspberry flavors in front of a finish propelled by healthy acidity. (Michael Schachner)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jan 6, 2022
Shows hints of ripeness to the well-knit dark cherry and currant flavors. The spicy and fresh-tasting finish is accented by beetroot notes. Drink now. 4,500 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)

This is amazing. The vibrancy and energy in this wine is stunning. The complexity of aromas are breathtaking with flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries and peaches. Full-bodied, yet ever so refined and polished with impeccable texture and beauty. The length is marvelous. This is a testimony to balance, harmony and transparency in a great red. Drink after 2023.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - May 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor is a combination of a proven style – the blend also includes 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot — and a particularly good harvest in the Puente Alto region in Maipo. Made by Enrique Tirado and aged for 15 months in French barrels, it is garnet red in the glass, with a very complex expression that unfolds in layers, beginning with black currant and sour cherry notes, followed by mint, cedar and pepper and a faint whiff of red pepper. Juicy in the mouth with fine-grained tannins and a concentration that centers the wine, channeling and stretching out the fruity backdrop, this is an unusually harmonious and delicious Bordeaux blend.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2021
Powerful and well-structured, with vibrant acidity backing a lively blend of dark fruit and fresh-crushed cooking spice flavors. Cedary and savory notes in the midpalate, with a long finish filled with underbrush accents. Drink now through 2027. 14,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2023
The 2021 Carménère Marques de Casa Concha includes 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Merlot from Peumo, Cachapoal. It was aged for 12 months, mainly in French oak barrels and 4% in foudres. Bright purple in the glass. The spicy nose offers plum and blueberry notes with hints of bay leaf and ash over a faint bed of jalapeño and oak. Indulgent, juicy and broad with mild freshness, the finish delivers ash and jalapeño flavors. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
The 2021 Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere contains 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Merlot and was sourced from the classical zone for the grapes—Peumo in Cachapoal. They picked the grapes on normal dates (20th of May). It fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts and matured in French oak barrels, 29% of them new, although 4% of the volume was in 5,000-liter Italian foudres for 12 months. It has 14% alcohol and kept a moderate pH of 3.6. The élevage was shorter and they reduced the new oak. The characteristic of this range is that the wines are textbook examples of the varieties and places and are quite homogeneous from vintage to vintage, here showing the freshness of the vintage, which is more delicate and with good tension. 240,000 bottles produced. It was bottled between June 2022 and February 2023. (Luis Gutiérrez)

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
The aromas of iodine and blackcurrants with roses and lavender make the wine extremely perfumed. It’s full-bodied with a tight, fine-tannined palate that shows linear flow through the center palate. It’s vertical and integrated, adding depth and serious quality to the wine.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2019 Bordeaux Blend Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot from Puente Alto that spent 18 months in three-fourths new barrels. Purple in color. The remarkably detailed nose begins and ends with notes of blackberry, black currant and blueberry, while in between, balsamic aromas ranging from camphor to ash appear along with a whiff of violets. All of the above comes packaged in a cigar box. Sugary initially, the flow is creamy and expansive, with polished tannins, while it grows more compact later on, stretching out the flavors. A red that showcases the best of Maipo. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The 2019 Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère (from Peumo), 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot, higher in Carmenere and reflecting a warmer and drier vintage when then bottled wine reached 15% alcohol. It fermented with destemmed grapes in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 75% of them new, for 18 months. Here, the Carmenere adds herbal freshness and changes the aromatic profile when compared with the 2019 Epu. 2019 was a good year for Carmenere, which suffers in extremely warm years like 2017, but in moderately warm years like 2019, the variety displays that herbal character and has good density. It’s full-bodied and round, with saturated tannins, tasty, spicy and long, with a dry, serious finish. It’s balsamic, with notes of camphor and a silky and velvety texture. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22
An exceptional vintage from the joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Mouton) and Concha y Toro, this cabernet-focused blend grows at a parcel of the old Tocornal vineyard in Puente Alto. Almaviva’s 148 acres of vines surround the winery on a terrace above the north bank of Maipo River. The cool elevation (2,130 feet) and the alluvial soils take cabernet in an elegant direction, rarely found outside Bordeaux, and rarely reaching the level of this latest release. It made me homesick for Chile, tasting the salt air of the coast and the mountain air of the Andes, the velvet-textured contribution of the carmenère (23 percent of the blend) and the cranberry and currant freshness of the fruit. Tight, floral, spicy and youthfully firm, this wine’s subtle power will sustain it for decades.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
This Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend shows dried herbs, nutmeg, green bell pepper, and hints of tobacco on the nose. The palate has good structure, medium acidity, and velvet tannins. Oak adds smoky notes to the mix of ripe blueberry and plum. It’s delicate and has a smooth lingering finish. (Jesica Vargas)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
Balances elegant floral plum and cherry flavors against a well-structured frame of bitter olive, tobacco and savory notes, which persist from a push of fresh acidity. Ends with dark chocolate and espresso notes and firm tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2028. 15,000 cases made, 2,400 cases imported. This sanguine red opens with a layer of roasted coffee bean flavors, which join a core of cherry tart before fanning out around mineral-laced acidity. Notes of blackberries, dark cherries, blueberries and mint chocolate. It’s full-bodied with tight, firm tannins. Structured, firm and tannic with lots of potential. Try after 2023.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignor Gran Reserva Etiqueta Negra from Isla de Maipo spent 14 months in French barrels and foudres, 20% of them new. Maroon red in color, it offers a nose of black currant and mint plus hints of camphor and a vivacious touch of bay leaf. Complex and juicy with fine-grained tannins, this is a classic Maipo Cab. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
Following the line of the 2017, the 2019 Gran Reserva Etiqueta Negra Cabernet Sauvignon keeps good freshness and poise in this warm and dry year. The oak is quite integrated, and the fruit is ripe without excess. There are some spicy and cigar ash notes along with abundant fine-grained tannins typical of the variety. 180,000 bottles produced. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Escudo Rojo Origine comes from Buin, Maipo, and is a mixture of grapes from several vineyard parcels harvested at different times, which then spent 12 months in French oak barrels, one-third new. Red with a violet shimmer. The aromas are black currant and blackberry plus hints of balsam and pencil box notes. In the mouth, it’s juicy with active, grippy tannins, well-judged freshness and a lingering finish.
