Charred blackberry, violet and white peppercorn aromas make for a familiar and pleasing nose. The palate is ripe with berry flavors that are cut by pinches of herb and more elegant spices. (Matt Kettmann)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Another brilliant value that readers will love, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Silencieux,is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, all of which spent 22 months in 50% new oak. This medium to full-bodied, round, balanced, mouth-filling beauty has lots of ripe black and blue fruits, some background spicy oak, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Drink bottles any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This seductive wine rolls up all the velvety appeal of Oakville Cabernet in a bottle that’s comparatively affordable for what many consider Napa’s best AVA for Cab. Plump dark plums, black currants, dark chocolate and cinnamon come to mind while savoring this full-bodied but gentle wine. Tannins are profuse but silky, so the wine is enjoyable already. Best from 2025–2035. (Jim Gordon)
A very firm and polished red with currants, chocolate and salted almonds. Terra-cotta. Medium body. Juicy and flavorful with extremely polished tannins. Very creamy textured. Give it two or three years to come around. Drink after 2025. (James Suckling)
Checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot, all from Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville sports a dense purple hue to go with straight-up textbook Oakville notes of darker fruits, iron, black olives, and tobacco, with just a kiss of background spring flowers. It’s medium to full-bodied, round, textured, beautifully balanced, and has tons of classic varietal character. It’s a brilliant value to enjoy any time over the coming 15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Alluring nuances of rose petal, tobacco and cinnamon lead into a ripe, chocolaty palate of black cherries, cocoa and raspberries as a soft, velvety texture achieves a very smooth mouthfeel. Best through 2031. (Jim Gordon)
This has aromas of dark chocolate, walnuts, black cherries, plums and spearmint. Firm and well structured, with a full body and firm, slightly grainy tannins. Excellent balance. Better from 2025. (James Suckling)
Lively, with a bramble-tinged mix of raspberry, blackberry and plum compote notes, laced with licorice snap and apple wood accents on the back end. Shows good energy throughout. Drink now through 2035. 15,332 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Wonderful crunchy black and blue fruits with violets, eucalyptus and nutmeg with cocoa powder and subtle pencil shaving notes. Very finely grained juicy tannins with refreshing acidity that cleanses the palate. Full- to medium-bodied yet polished and balanced. Shows beautiful drinkability but it will go much further with age. Try after 2028. (James Suckling)
Coming from well-drained, gravelly loam soils just west of the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon C.C. Ranch just about jumps out of the glass with ripe red, black, and blue fruits as well as complex notes of sappy green flowers, camphor, iron, and dusty earth. It’s a big, mouth-filling, full-bodied effort that has solid tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length, and there’s clearly a more floral, herbal edge here that gives it a singular character. While it doesn’t quite have the elegance in its tannins of some of the other releases, I love its complexity, and it has perfectly ripe fruit and a terrific sense of freshness and vibrancy. It’s going to evolve for 15–20 years with ease. It’s an impressive wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Rich and chocolaty on the nose, deep and saturated with black fruits on the palate, this impressive, dense and concentrated wine is one to save for later enjoyment. The thickness of the fine-grained tannins and sheer power of the blueberries, black cherries and roasted, toasted oak spices need time to marry. (Jim Gordon)
Leads with a core of steeped black currant and warmed fig fruit, backed by loam, licorice root and roasted alder notes. The broad, grippy finish shows a buried cast iron edge as the fruit and loam notes merge steadily, ending with touches of old-school burl and walnut husk. Best from 2025 through 2040. 2,400 cases made. (James Molesworth)

A bold and warmly spiced wine, this bottle wraps gentle tannins around superripe and chocolaty flavors for a mouthfilling and supple effect. Cinnamon, cloves and mint decorate the juicy black cherry and blueberry flavors. Best through 2030. (Jim Gordon)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon La Storia is a slightly transparent deep ruby red and is aromatic of pencil shavings, redcurrant, and tobacco. Full-bodied and lifted with ripe tannins, it has good freshness, and although it has a modest finish, it’s clean and well done. Drink it over the next 5–6 years, although I would prefer to drink this young. (Audrey Frick)

Lots of black currant and lead pencil shaving aromas here. Full-bodied with very fine tannins with a freshness and brightness. Some graphite and magnet shavings, too. Juicy and flavorful. Coombsville magic here. 95% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot that’s from 30-year-old vines in the Coombsville appellation, in the southern part of Napa Valley. It has a classic, old school Napa vibe in its herbal black fruits, camphor, bouquet garni, and violet-tinged aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has terrific purity and freshness, ripe tannins, and the class to benefit from 4–6 years of bottle age and evolve for at least two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
