View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Loaded with scents of blueberries, black cherries and cassis underpinned by a framework of cedary oak, DVO’s 2020 Red Wine is a 300-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot aged 23 months in 60% new French oak. Full-bodied without being overly high octane, it shows admirable suppleness and ripe tannins. A blend of fruit from Oakville and Coombsville, it’s almost creamy-rich in texture on the palate, then lingers elegantly on the lengthy finish. Nicely done! (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
Juicy, fresh and forward, with brambly structure carrying blackberry and mulberry fruit flavors as well as lively licorice and roasted apple wood notes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036. 300 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Iron, cedar and wood-char aromas waft from the glass before potent black fruits, dark oak spices and espresso flavors fill the mouth. A full web of tannins holds together blackberries, blueberries and singed-herb notes. Best from 2026. (Jim Gordon)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2024
Friendly flavors of cassis and cherry compote glide through easily, flanked by a hefty toasted vanilla accent. There’s just enough fruit through the finish for balance. Drink now through 2025. 10,300 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Nice herbs, olives with a hint of savory anchovies, blackcurrants and tobacco to the nose. Juicy and bright with fine, present tannins on a medium- to full-bodied palate. Nicely flattering and fruit-forward, too. Drink or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
Medium ruby-purple, the 2020 Red Blend is savory and less defined than the rest of the lineup, with aromas of bell pepper, chargrill and tar over a core of red and black currants. The full-bodied palate offers a core of savory fruit, firm, grainy tannins and just enough juicy acidity on the finish to call you in for another sip. (Erin Brooks)

This is dark-fruited with blackberries, chocolates, dried herbs and dark spices. Hints of violets, too. Medium-bodied with supple tannins. Polished and silky with a fresh, fruity finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2023
Initial aromas are quite spirity, conjuring up thoughts of brandy caramel. But the palate moves on with notes of black cherry and plum, plum skins, toasted wood, anise, tobacco and just a hint of appetizing smokiness. Structurally the wine offers a full mouth of dusty tannins, moderate acidity and a solid finish. Lovers of bigger, bolder Zins will quite enjoy. (Stacy Briscoe)
