Laurel Glen Counterpoint Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97602

WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021
Crisply focused in currant, dried herb and cedar, this is a classically structured red that is vibrantly approachable and ample to drink in its youth. With just 30% new French oak, it delivers forested earthiness and high-toned freshness that complement each other well for a very fair price.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2021
Offers a tasty mix of gently mulled blackberry and red currant fruit flavors, laced with subtle herb and iron accents along the way. Judicious toast lets everything knit, keeping a fresh edge through the finish. Drink now through 2026. 1,550 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This estate-grown wine is from the certified-organic site farmed by Phil Coturri. Black olive, garrigue, iron and a hint of game fill in the supple, textured core of the palate, with a velvety feel lifted by persistent acidity. This will do well over time; enjoy 2026–2030.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard in the Sonoma Mountain AVA, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Laurel Glen Vineyard was brought up in 55% new French oak. It sports a deep purple color as well as lots of mineral-drenched black and blue fruits along with notes of charcoal, graphite, and lead pencil. It’s rich and medium-bodied, with beautiful purity of fruit and a balanced style that’s going to age gracefully. It shows the purity, balance, and overall harmony of this great vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20
Farmed by Phil Coturri, who earned organic certification for the vineyard in 2014, Laurel Glen’s vines face east, into the morning sun, creating an elegant cabernet in the 2016 vintage. Its herbal tobacco scents and racy flavors of red and black currants feel youthfully compressed. The earthy tannins combine the richness of black-cherry skins and flourless chocolate cake. Tense for now, this needs several years in the cellar to mellow and evolve; knowing Laurel Glen’s track record, it will likely develop well for a decade or more.

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jun 2023
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is pure and expressive this year. Blended with 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, it has a beautiful perfume of cassis, mint chocolate, dried thyme and lavender with hints of mushroom and tobacco just beginning to emerge. The palate is plush and velvety with an expansive core of floral fruit and bright, balancing acidity that gives it a weightless feel. It could use another 3–5+ years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)
JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
Nearly black and made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and a small dash of Petit Verdot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum brings forward a more lifted profile, with menthol, tobacco leaf, kirsch, and spice box notes. Full-bodied, with more lift and a bright, angular texture, it has earthy grip, fresh lift, and a good balance of fruit and earth. This needs some time, so give it a few years and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
A plush, fleshy style, with a bittersweet cocoa powder edge around a core of blackberry and black cherry reduction. Reveals black licorice, roasted alder and bay leaf accents that fill in throughout, with a nice tug of earth through the finish. Best from 2024 through 2036. 335 cases made. (James Molesworth)

JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 21 months in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Gandona is a sexy, powerful red offering lots of chocolatey dark fruits, notes of scorched earth, tobacco, and graphite, full-bodied richness, and a layered, impressively textured mouthfeel. There are only 400 cases produced, but it’s well worth seeking out. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Feb 2021
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 21 months in French oak, 60% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up gregarious notes of crushed blackberries, ripe black cherries and blackcurrant cordial with hints of mocha, bay leaves and black licorice plus a waft of cedar. Big, concentrated, full-bodied and jam-packed with black fruit flavors, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and layered. 400 cases were made. Lots of ripe black fruit with blackcurrant jam, nutmeg and cedar on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with layers of juicy blackberries and toasty-spice notes, framed by firm, sleek tannins. Dense palate. Try from 2022.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
Vivid and expressive, with a lovely beam of plum, anise and boysenberry notes sailing through, flanked with sweet bay leaf and violet notes and carrying through the lengthy finish. This has the grip to cellar too, but approachable now for its vivacious fruit. Drink now through 2034. 1,800 cases made. (James Molesworth)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
Coming all from Mt. Veeder, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals a dense purple color as well as a spicy, meaty nose of darker plum and currant-like fruit intermixed with plenty of tobacco, bouquet garni, and earthy minerality. Medium to full-bodied, with plenty of fruit, solid mid-palate depth, and a good finish, enjoy this beautifully balanced mountain Cabernet over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Nov 2020
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Brandlin Estate opens with savory scents of grilled meats, bouquet garni and tapenade over a core of ripe black and red currants, boysenberries and black raspberries plus a touch of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with compelling tension, delivering freshness to the intense black and red fruits, framed by fine-grained tannins and finishing with a lingering herbal lift. A cool nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, pine and ripe red cherry. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Well-structured palate with balanced acidity that articulates the dark fruit and spice. Cardamom and paprika. Sustainable. Best after 2023.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 2, 2022
Though this features fleshy boysenberry and plum fruit flavors that border on jammy, this stays just honest enough, revealing a bolt of cocoa and a light infusion of tobacco through the toasty finish. Drink now through 2024. 39,831 cases made. (James Molesworth)
