When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Shows a singed mesquite note that melds with a core of gently steeped red and black cherry fruit, with a light zip of licorice on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 175,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Indulgent ripeness of flavor and richness of texture makes this deep-colored wine stand out. Almost-sweet flavors of blackberry jam and chocolate cherries combine with a full body, velvety tannins and soft acidity. (Jim Gordon)

This Cab Sauv includes small percentages of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Malbec in the mix. The result is a balanced wine offering notes of blueberry, raspberry and toasted wood, cemented together by a tacky tannic texture, modest acidity and balanced alcohol. (Stacy Briscoe)

Aromas of currants, chocolate and oak tree. Medium to full body. Medium-round tannins and a juicy finish. A blend of 91% cabernet sauvignon with petite sirah, petit verdot, malbec and merlot. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The entry point into Sterling’s Cabernet lineup is the 2020 Heritage Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak, it’s a plump, easygoing effort, medium-bodied and loaded with black cherries. Soft, supple and easy to drink, it’s surprisingly clean (seemingly smoke-free) and juicy; just a good, solid drink that finishes with some gentle tannins. (Joe Czerwinski)

Very pretty depth with a tile and rock-like texture to this. Minerally. Redcurrant. Medium to full body. Juicy finish. Needs two or three years to soften and come together.

I think this is first time we’ve rated a Knights Valley Reserve ahead of the Private Reserve. Selected from rockier bits of the vineyards, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Knights Valley features aromas of black cherries and red raspberries, offering a vastly different and more interesting fruit profile than the regular Knights Valley bottling. Dark chocolate-mocha notes, vanilla and cedar bring additional complexity to the mix. This medium to full-bodied wine is ripe, plush and long on the finish, with two decades of deliciousness ahead of it. (Joe Czerwinski)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley Reserve is a very beautiful wire in this vintage. Bright floral and mineral accents play off a core of intense, distinctly red-toned fruit. Best of all, the 2020 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The strong savoriness of Knights Valley is not especially evident. I suspect that is mostly the function of a warm, dry growing season. Black cherry, cola and turned-earth aromas meet on the nose of this bottling. Pleasant flavors of roasted cherry and strawberry are enhanced by wild thyme and chaparral herbs on the palate. (Matt Kettmann)

Tasty, bright raspberry and blackberry flavors are coated with a buttery, oaky layer of cedar and toast that stands apart from the fruitiness. The wine is full-bodied and moderately tannic in texture. (Jim Gordon)
