J. Wilkes Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 92524

WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2019
A high-toned acidity keeps this wine’s notes of ripe plum and fruit nectar in line and on point.
VN8787 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2019
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles Highlands District is a bold, pungent wine. Savory herbs, tobacco and cedar add a strong aromatic presence. Although a very good wine, the Cabernet is not quite as compelling as the other wines in the range, while the savory style is on the edge of being distractingly vegetal.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black cherries, warm cassis, chocolate pie and blackberry preserves notes plus nuances of wild sage, forest floor and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly played and refreshing with velvety tannins and a long mineral-tinged finish.
JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
The flagship is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, and this cuvée just about always represents the pinnacle of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. The 2017 is 100% estate Cabernet Sauvignon and reveals a deep purple color as well a stunning bouquet of blue fruits, burning embers, dark chocolate, sage brush, and crushed rocks. It’s powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, and the tannins clamp down on the finish enough to warrant hiding this beauty in the cellar for a solid 5–7 years. If drinking today, give it an hour or two in a decanter. It’s another stunning wine from this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a positively stellar wine in this challenging year. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, chocolate, spice and espresso all run through the 2017. This is an especially inky, flamboyant style for Chappellet, but all the elements come together very nicely.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Ripe and well-proportioned, with loads of cassis, plum reduction and melted black licorice notes melding together, picking up graphite and apple wood accents through the muscular but defined finish. A late kick of fruit on the finish is matched by minerally cut. Best from 2023 through 2036. 2,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Black fruit, dark plums, cedar and dried herbs on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured and focused on the palate. Give it some time to calm down. Try after 2023.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022
Earthy in tobacco and cedar, this block-designate from near Atlas Peak shows a richness of dark-black fruit and a touch of reduction. Burly in style, showing the warmth of the vintage, it finishes in a grip of supple, integrated tannin. (Virginie Boone)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 14, 2022
Offers a gush of warm cassis and plum jam flavors, along with a mix of anise and apple wood. Though the fruit gives this a good effort at pushing through, this has the vintage's slightly rustic structure underscoring the finish. Drink now through 2030. 525 cases made. (James Molesworth)

JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 30, 2020
This is really mesmerizing to taste with plums, currants, turmeric and nutmeg on the nose and palate. Some juniper, too. Turns to mineral and stone. Pure fruit. Full-bodied, yet tight and composed with beautiful, ripe fruit that remains cool and poised. Firm, lightly chewy tannins. March 2021 release. This needs at least three or four years to come around. Try after 2024.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cariad is another sensational wine from Allison Tauziet. It offers a beautiful blue fruit character as well as plenty of violets, tobacco, dark chocolate, and gravelly earth. This beauty is full-bodied, incredibly pure and focused, brilliantly balanced, and has a great, great finish. It needs a solid 4–5 years of bottle age and, as with the Tychson Hill, I suspect will still be drinking beautifully at age 30. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cariad displays a very deep purple-black color. It bursts from the glass with an immediately compelling first waft of blueberry compote, plum preserves, licorice and fertile loam with emerging hints of candied violets, mossy tree bark, oolong tea and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is surprisingly elegant with a firm backbone of ripe, finely pixilated tannins and bold freshness, featuring all the black fruit layers suggested on the nose arranged with beautiful composure, finishing very long on a provocative iron ore note.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
Colgin’s 2017 Cariad opens with captivating aromatics and tons of sheer presence. In 2017, the Cariad has less Merlot than is typical, while the Franc is on the higher side - a combination that gives the wine much of its lift and overall feel. Racy and nuanced to the core, Cariad is endowed with a feeling of soaring intensity that is hard to fully describe. It is another positively brilliant wine in this range of 2017s from Colgin.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
Shows an enticing tobacco leaf note out front, backed by a juicy, compact core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit that should unwind in due time. Light singed alder and smoldering tobacco elements score the finish. For the cellar. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2034. 500 cases made. JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
Tasting like a great bottle of Château Lafite, the 2017 La Joie is based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon and brought up, I suspect, in mostly new French oak. Deep ruby/purple, with a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, cedarwood, graphite, and tobacco, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an incredible sense of elegance and purity, building tannins, and a great, great finish. This majestic, regal Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is going to require a decade of cellaring to hit maturity (although it’s far from unapproachable today) and will see its 50th birthday in fine form. I followed this bottle for three days and it never showed a hint of oxidation. This is easily my wine of the vintage in 2017. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th May 2020
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 La Joie has a very deep garnet-purple color. It opens a little closed and broody, giving glimpses of blackcurrant cordial, espresso, charcoal and black truffles to begin, before blossoming out to a whole array of preserved black and blue fruits, dusty soil, crushed rocks and iron ore scents plus a waft of roses. The medium to full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, with firm, grainy tannins and a lively backbone supporting the muscular fruit, finishing very long and mineral laced. The alcohol weighed in at just 13.9% this year (14% on the label), making for a particularly elegant but no less impactful La Joie! 2,500 cases were made.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2017 La Joie is another gorgeous wine in this lineup. Deep, pliant and nuanced, the 2017 is impeccably balanced. Silky and plush, La Joie is especially refined in 2017, and that complements its mid-weight structure so nicely. Hints of rose petal, lavender, mint and blood orange add brightness. The 2017 is a stunning wine by any measure.

From a single vineyard in Calistoga, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus isn’t far off what the estate produced in 2016. It’s a pure, full-bodied, powerful 2017 that does everything right. Loads of blueberries, cassis, Asian spice, and flowery incense define the bouquet, and it has a pure, classic, focused style on the palate. I love its purity of fruit, it has ripe, present tannins, and while it needs 2–3 years of bottle age, it’s going to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jul 2019
A final tank blend soon to be bottled, the 2017 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon gives up a deep garnet-purple color an impressive array of black cherries, charcoal, mulberries, warm plums, chargrill and crème de cassis scents with hints of bay leaves, smoked meats, crushed rocks and spice cake. Full-bodied, taut and chewy in the mouth, it delivers a solid structure and a savory finish.

Pleasant aromas of dark berry, toasted wood, coffee bean and roasted cocoa show on the nose of this bottling. Chalky tannins make for firm tension on the palate, where those berry and cocoa tones ride fresh acidity into the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Bright and energetic, with soaring aromatics, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots is utterly captivating from the first taste. A rush of blackberry, crushed rocks, graphite, rose petal, mint, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds in the glass. All the pedigree of Knights Valley is on display. The 2017 is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. It spent 18 months in Taransaud and Darnajou barrels. The team opted to bulk out 40% of the wine, so production is down sharply. The wine that was bottled, well, it’s pretty special.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Feb 2020
Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Les Pavots comes from Knights Valley AVA. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with vivacious notes of crushed black berries, Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and blackcurrant cordial with touches of camphor, lavender, tapenade and cigar box plus hints of mocha and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory. 2,050 cases were made.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
This is marked by a core of lightly spicy cassis and plum fruit, accented by loganberry, mesquite and savory details. The structure is fine-grained, giving the finish good cut while an echo of violet curls around the fruit at the very end. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2035. 2,050 cases made. (James Molesworth)
