When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Ripe melon, honeyed tangerine, and floral notes all emerge from the 2021 Chardonnay Arroyo Vista, a round, supple, nicely textured Chardonnay with bright acidity and a clean finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Appealing for the plump, ripe flavor profile, with apricot, peach and nectarine fruit at the core, plus details of citrus zest, dried flowers and a fresh thread of juicy acidity. Finds remarkable balance and nuance on the finish. Drink now. 10,105 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Almost opaque in the glass, this luxury bottling entices with intense aromas of black currant and blackberry sauce on the nose, with savory hints of dark olive and caramel spice. It’s quite dry on the palate, where licorice, violet and cassis flavors linger amidst the polished tannins.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/1/2020
The most expensive release is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature, which is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Saint Macaire aged 19 months in 100% new French oak. Its saturated purple hue is followed by powerful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, chocolate, white truffle, and chalky minerality, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful wine. I’d give bottles 2–3 years to shed a touch of baby fat and develop more nuances, and it should keep for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
