When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The most widely available Frank Family cab is firm and structured in this drought vintage, wrapping moderate to full tannins around a mix of bright red cherries, black cherries, mint and cassis accents. No hurry to drink it. Best from 2026. (James Suckling)

This lively wine boasts aromas of blackberry compote, cardamom, florals, and dried tobacco leaf on the nose. The flavors on the palate are black cherry, orange zest and vanilla cream, spiked with nutmeg, pink peppercorn, dark chocolate and earth, with a dry finish. Pair with Mongolian Beef. (Tonya Pitts)

The 2021 Proprietary Blend Blacktail is also terrific. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 11% Petite Sirah, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has a beautiful full-bodied style as well as ripe black fruits, chocolate, and peppery, herbal notes, plenty of mid-palate depth, and ripe tannins that emerge on the finish. It’s a beautifully layered red to drink over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A delicious red with deep dark fruit, showing softness and freshness at the same time. It’s full and layered with round, creamy tannins and a mushroom, bark and dark fruit-led center palate. Chewy at the end with some attractive, velvety-textured tannins. Give it a year or two to soften. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)

Notes of rich black currants, blackberries, paprika and tapenade follow through to a juicy, medium-bodied palate with plenty of cassis and a hint of spice and tobacco. Not a wine for depth but it is well-balanced and pleasant. Sustainable. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

Velvety in texture and full in body, this moderately tannic wine is packed with milk chocolate, black cherries and vanilla flavors. It is quietly powerful, and its rich chocolaty character lingers on the finish. (Jim Gordon)

Dark, intense and pure aromas of elderberry, blueberry, pepper and wild herb decorate the nose of this widely available, amazingly priced bottling. The medium-bodied palate pairs peppery spice, plenty of acid and a smooth structure with juicy yet roasted black fruit and a pinch of thyme. (Matt Kettmann)

This relatively recent proprietary red-blend creation continues to impress each vintage, showcasing Paso power with deft balance in pleasing ways. Aromas of blackberry jam, violet extract and root-beer floats proceed from the nose into a comforting palate of strawberry, cola and peppery spices. Firm, lingering tannins lead through the caramel-laced finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Almost opaque in the glass, this luxury bottling entices with intense aromas of black currant and blackberry sauce on the nose, with savory hints of dark olive and caramel spice. It’s quite dry on the palate, where licorice, violet and cassis flavors linger amidst the polished tannins.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/1/2020
The most expensive release is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature, which is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Saint Macaire aged 19 months in 100% new French oak. Its saturated purple hue is followed by powerful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, chocolate, white truffle, and chalky minerality, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful wine. I’d give bottles 2–3 years to shed a touch of baby fat and develop more nuances, and it should keep for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Those seeking a slightly sweet, nearly effervescent wine for a hot beach or pool day should look no further than this bottling. Aromas of Starburst candy and 7-Up lead from the nose into a refreshing palate of more citrus and iced-soda flavors. (Matt Kettmann)
