Item#: 98114
Plums and berries with mahogany, cedar and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Linear and bright. Some tile undertones to the fruit. Will improve with age, but why wait? Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
A great value wine, the I Greppi 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Greppicante is 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon all aged in second and third-use barrique. Fruit is sourced over an eight-hectare vineyard located just above sea level with a mix of sand and clay soils that are characteristic of Bolgheri. The pretty bouquet reveals cherry cream, coffee, toasted biscuit, candied violet and more floral tones to follow. The effect is balance, and the tannins are tucked within the wine’s medium-rich texture. This is an ample production of 90,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Bolgheri Superiore
2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Ornellaia is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new French oak for 18 months, with another 12 months in bottle prior to release. Flush with herbs and menthol, blackberry, and cedar, it is full bodied and fills the sides of the mouth with rounded fruit of luxurious plum, black cherry, and toast, with supple and velvety tannins. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
Inviting aromas of blackberry, black currant, anise, cedar, vanilla and tobacco draw you in to this red, which is sleek and open on the palate. This is so well-balanced, it’s approachable now, yet there’s a bit of reserve too. The fruit flavors are prominent on the finish, along with mineral and spice notes, while the lasting impression is a salty, flinty element. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2045. 2,350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Tasted from barrel, the 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia will be presented in the fall but won’t hit the market until spring of the following year. This is a beauty, so generous and opulent with fully seamless transitions. The wine’s traditional blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with tiny percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although this warm vintage makes due with a pinch less of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is selected across 107 hectares of Ornellaia vines, although the estate recently purchased an additional eight hectares next to Guado al Tasso in Castagneto Carducci, with terraces and vines aged between 15 and 28 years old. This broad and generous expression has a beautiful quality of fruit and oak that speaks to the very best of Italian winemaking. (Monica Larner)
The 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It opens to an impenetrable, full-bodied approach with dark fruit, pencil shaving, toasted oak, Spanish cedar, campfire ash and iron ore. For sure, this is an especially concentrated and oak-driven vintage of this iconic wine. It absolutely requires more aging time. It feels quite tight and firm in its youth. The concentration is abundant. (Monica Larner)

Deep character of ripe purple fruit with sweet spices, violets and chocolate notes. Full-bodied, succulent and mellow with creamy tannins and velvety texture. Fruity and lingering. Sustainable. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
The nose is earthy, vegetal and stony, with undercurrents of both sweetness and spice becoming more powerful with time. The earthiness persists on the palate, but takes a backseat to an emergent, tart florality. Waves of acid wash against austere tannins. (Danielle Callegari)
Broad and rich, offering plum, blackberry and leather flavors, with a leafy underbrush note. This red is buoyed by lively acidity and ready to enjoy, with the balance tipping toward lightly astringent tannins on the salty finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. 4,000 cases made, 1,900 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Lots of incense to the aromas with sandalwood and lavender. Currants, blackberries. and fresh herbs, too. Full-bodied and very rich, with a powerful, structured mid-palate and a long, long finish. A wine for the future. Needs four to five years to soften. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)
The nose offers seemingly infinite layers, first showing tiny wild blueberries and mulberries, then violets and peonies, then a soft, soothing earth element comes in, with a final tangy, peppery aroma. On the palate, sweeter, darker berries spar with continued astringent notes, while silky tannins blanket everything with the distinctive mouthfeel of Tua Rita. (Danielle Callegari)
A concentrated, supple red, delivering black currant, blackberry, iron, earth and toasty spice flavors. While backed by a spine of firm, dense tannins, this remains balanced and long in its youthful manner. Give this two to three more years in the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2042. 3,333 cases made, 400 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

There’s a nice, light coffee-like edge to the currants and berries on the nose. The palate is more about vivid black fruit coating firm, lightly chewy tannins, giving a firm but fruity finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 20% each of cabernet franc and sangiovese. Sustainable. This needs another year in bottle to even out. Try from 2024. (James Suckling)

This robust red shows nice balance between the black currant, plum, licorice, cedar and spice flavors and the dense matrix of tannins. Starts out fluid, before the dusty tannins take hold on the finish. This is long, so have faith. Best from 2026 through 2043. 10,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

In addition to the 2019 vintage, I previewed the 2020 and the 2021 vintages. I’m giving a temporary review to the 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco, but I’m holding back on the 2021 because it is too early. We have two exciting vintages before us. The 2021 (that is still in barrel) shows lots of perfumed intensity and an explosive mouthfeel. The 2020 tastes balanced and long with even more tannic structure to hold it firmly stitched together. The 2021 shows a seamless delivery of soft black fruit, cherry, spice and grilled herb. This is an iconic blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Sangiovese. (Monica Larner)
Aromatic nose of blackcurrants, berries and cherries, together with hints of flowers and smooth oak. Full-bodied with a super-clean and intense bead of fruit running through the lightly firm tannins to give a long, only lightly abrasive finish. From organically grown grapes. A classy, well-structured blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and sangiovese. Drinkable now, but better from 2024. (James Suckling)
Elegant and linear in profile, this red boasts cherry, black currant, mineral, earth and Mediterranean scrub aromas and flavors. There's fine tension and freshness, with a long, resonant aftertaste. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2025 through 2042. 5,400 cases made, 430 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
The 2020 Saffredi is compelling. Deep yet quite structured, 2020 is unlike any Saffredi I can recall tasting because of its balance of intense dark fruit and vertical structure. Plum, blackberry, pencil shavings, lavender and spice saturate the palate. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2020 is not as showy as most vintages at the same stage. (Antonio Galloni)
This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is exuberant and explosive. The 2020 Saffredi reveals a very ripe and rich interpretation of this iconic wine made by Elisabetta Geppetti and her family. The blend of fruit is the same, but 2020 actually sees less oak intervention to allow that dark fruit to shine through. There is blackberry, perfumed rose, dried apricot, spice and sweet cinnamon. In all, the wine offers immediate fruit and a vertical delivery of flavors. Finding that combination of wine versus oak is not easy, Elisabetta tells me. (Monica Larner)
Well structured and linear, this red frames a core of black currant and black cherry fruit with accents of toasty oak, sweet spices, tobacco and iron. Refined and harmonious, with the stuffing to develop over the next decade. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2035. 3,750 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. A linear and vivd red with black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Fresh flowers, too. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a bright finish. Give it a year or two, but already very pretty. Drink or hold.
Here’s a quality, easy-to-drink blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Varvàra is integrated and smooth with no rough spots. Black fruit, pressed rose, earth and spice are carefully woven together. All elements are in place, and the wine is available at a very attractive price point. (Monica Larner)
An expressive red, boasting black currant, blackberry, plum, iron and tobacco flavors, with firm, dusty tannins lending support. Fresh and balanced, with plenty of length and staying power. The 2020 Valdisanti is superb in this vintage. Rich, dark and sumptuous, this blend is alluring right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, grilled herbs, leather, new oak, licorice and mocha are nicely dialed up. The 2020 is opulent, not at all heavy. The 2020 is a gorgeous Valdisanti. (Antonio Galloni)
The Tolaini 2020 Valdisanti is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a vineyard called Tenuta San Giovanni. This is an especially intense and smooth red blend that shows impressive and seamless integration. You get the dark intensity of both grapes used in the blend framed by the sweet spice and toast of aging in French oak. This vintage carries especially broad shoulders and offers extra richness. Some 55,000 bottles are hitting the market in the fall of 2023. (Monica Larner)
An intense red, with graphite, spice and tar aromas complementing concentrated blackberry, blueberry, wild rosemary and mineral flavors. Reveals burly tannins that are assertive, yet not overly astringent at this youthful stage. Compact finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038. 4,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Subtle and beautiful on the nose with currants, flowers and light sage aromas that follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Extremely polished and poised. Classy. Best after 2028. (James Suckling)
Dripping with black currant, blackberry, black cherry, iron and toasty oak flavors, this red is suave and polished, showing flashes of tobacco and wild herbs that add even more detail as this builds to the long, kaleidoscopic finish. Features civilized tannins that are well-integrated and provide structure. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045. (Bruce Sanderson)
Inky dark in appearance, the 2020 Solaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. This vintage unfolds to exuberant richness and thick layers of blackberry and plum. The tannins are sweet and expertly crafted, adding both depth and fruit weight. The 2020 vintage is quite bold, and it plays its best cards in terms of texture and mouthfeel. It’s a bigger, more accessible wine compared to the last two vintages on the market. Spice, toasted coffee bean and more dark fruit color this full-bodied Tuscan red. (Monica Larner)
