When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Pippin apples and Anjou pears come to mind as this generous and fruity wine spreads lavish flavors across the palate. Dashes of vanilla and honey add some extra interest but the pure fruitiness defines it. (Jim Gordon)

Notes of black cherries and currants with dried flowers, sweet spices and dried citrus peel. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins. Very attractive dark berry character with hints of hazelnut and bark. Delicious. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Coming from multiple sites throughout the Central Coast, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a juicy, medium-bodied, nicely balanced style in its ripe cherry and plum fruit as well as notes of ripe herbs and chocolate. It’s a terrific value that brings plenty of classic Cabernet style and is perfect for drinking over the coming 2–4 years (probably longer, but why wait?). (Jeb Dunnuck)

Aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, roasted hazelnuts, cedar, graphite and bark. Full-bodied with grainy, chewy tannins around a core of ripe dark berries. Structured and long. Better after 2025. (James Suckling)

A dense color in the glass, this bottling offers toasty oak, roasted red fruit and charred beef aromas on the nose. There’s a fine tannic line to the palate, where boysenberry, pepper and toasted oak flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)
