Frog's Leap Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98290

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown is a firm, classically built wine that is going to need a few years to come into its own. There is admirable depth as well as character. Red cherry/plum fruit, spice, tobacco and mocha lend quite a bit of aromatic nuance to this mid-weight, super-expressive Cabernet from Frog’s Leap. (Antonio Galloni)

Perfumed nose of dried flowers, cassis, baked blueberries and chocolate orange with a touch of cinnamon. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Vibrant and zesty cabernet. Drink from 2023.

Where It's From

District / Napa Valley

View more wines from Napa Valley

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.

Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is Clone 337, matured 18 months in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud barrels. Marked on the nose by red berries, cherries and cedar, plus delicate cinnamon and clove shadings, this is a plush, concentrated full-bodied wine with a core of firmness to it and a long, lingering finish, both positive signs for aging. It’s one of the more approachable Schrader wines this vintage, but it should easily go another two decades. (Joe Czerwinski)

Lots of violets, flowery incense, cassis, and spice notes emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS, a full-bodied, silky, elegant 2019 that shines just as much for its purity and balance as its richness and depth. Possessing good acidity, a lively, vibrant mouthfeel, supple tannins, and a great finish, it has plenty of up-front appeal yet should easily evolve for a solid 20 years if properly stored. Racy, dark nose with pulpy character. Dried lychee, lavender and sandalwood. This is quite juicy, ample and almost a bit ethereal, despite the color and high alcohol. There is a fine twist of salinity on the palate that runs smoothly with lots of purple flowers. Really immaculate. Almost soft texture. Drink or hold.

Gushes with pure violet, plum and cassis notes, all flecked with hints of black tea, anise and sassafras. Driven, with a graphite underpinning providing a spine that stays in the background as the fruit stretches out. Approachable already but no rush at all. Drink now through 2038. 1,500 cases made. This jubilant bottling is bursting with blackberry, toasted wood and wet graphite aromas on the nose. Fresh red-fruit flavors are balanced by fine tannins on the palate, making for a reliable midweek sipper. (Matt Kettmann)

Deep purple-black, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard rockets out of the glass with intense notes of blackcurrant cordial, plum preserves and blueberry pie, plus hints of Chinese five spice, dusty soil, menthol, tar and black truffles, with a waft of roses. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, delivering layer upon layer of vibrant black and blue fruits with a rock-solid backbone of super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and just plain delicious. Pure, seemingly effortless, seamless perfection. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 80% new French oak, the alcohol is a relatively modest 14.3%. 300 cases were made. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/21/2021
I always love this Cabernet from this team, and while it’s never the biggest or richest wine from the Valley, it always has a Château Lafite-like elegance and poise. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from the estate vineyard, that was raised in 80% new French oak. Beautiful, classic notes of crème de cassis, freshly sharpened pencils, tobacco, violets, and Asian spices dominate the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with flawless balance, wonderfully integrated tannins and acidity, and just a beautiful, seamless, regal style that’s something to behold. It’s going to benefit from 4–6 years of bottle age, and I suspect it will still be drinking brilliantly in 30, 40, maybe even 50 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A nice muscular, toasty style, with a core of black currant and blackberry paste scored with loam, licorice root and alder. This has heft but also good cut and drive through the finish, with a late echo of espresso crema. Best from 2023 through 2038. 4,123 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Notes of ripe dark berries, dark chocolate, toasted spices and bark. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. Attractive blackcurrants and hints of dried herbs on the center palate with a flavorful finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
